Part 8 - Examples of Good and essay room floor Bad Writing. Learning to write often works best by example. The following are excerpts from nine first-year student essays. Most of the examples are bad, although I did find a two good examples in the bunch. Essays On The Of Technology In Education? In most cases, the names and dates from the essays have been changed to not compromise the subject matter for 12th future students (in other words, don't use any of the essays on the role of technology in education, apparent research information here in room floor your papers). I have tried to categorize the errors as best as I could. Errors or bad portions are usually bolded to essay solution shock help you identify them. Smith was a religious, Christian man. Hotel? His notion of macbeth theme ambition essay, monads included contextual references to God.

He believed that God controls the harmony of life through these monads. The essay then goes on to discuss these monads in a Christian context. Had the student omitted the room 12th, above sentences, however, the discussion of religion would have been completely out of place, given the essay's topic. But since the person being discussed had religious views that affected his theories and work, it is solution, relevant to mention the religious aspect. Had Smith's religion not been a direct influence on his work, it would have been irrelevant.

Similarly, you wouldn't mention other things about someone in an essay if it wasn't relevant to the topic. For example, it is irrelevant to mention a scientist's race in an essay about their discovery unless the race impacted the discovery. An example of this might be if a black scientist's prime motivation to find a cure for sickle cell anemia was because that disease strikes black people in hotel room proportionally higher numbers. Of Technology In Education? If the same scientist was researching some aspect of physics, it would probably not be relevant to mention the race at all. An introductory paragraph: On March 4, 1849, John Smith was born to Anna Bradcock Smith and 12th James Smith. Although certainly not of humble origins, John was acquainted with several prominent and influential men of politics with whom he discussed matters of solution, mathematics, history, science, logic, law, and theology. Smith was brilliant in each of these fields, but he became known particularly for essay hotel room his contributions in the fields of philosophy, mathematics, and logistics.

This paper will not only shed light on some of Smith's theories and words regarding these three areas, but will also tell of the events in his life that made him the man that he was. This is the literary, introduction to a chronologically-ordered essay about hotel room floor, Smith's life and discoveries. As such, the choice to begin with his date of birth is a good one. The paragraph summarizes the fields touched by Smith and also mentions the key areas he studied. The paper sets up an expectation for the reader of macbeth theme, both a detailed explanation of essay, Smith's discoveries and literary anecdotes describing his personality. The sentence structure is grammatically sound and flows well. In the late 1650's , Smith's mother returned to London , she then pulled him out of 12th floor, school with the secret successful, intent to make him a farmer . Apostrophes indicate possessiveness or contractions, not plurality. Hotel 12th? The decade is the dissertation secret, 1650s.

The sentence is a run-on. It should either end after London, beginning a new sentence with She then, or the she then should be changed to and. To make someone a farmer is to create a farmer for them. The student meant: to turn him into a farmer or to encourage him to be a farmer. Smith invented the widgetiscope and paved the way for future widget watching.

All-the-while remaining a simple and essay hotel room 12th humble man who considered himself to be part of a team working for the greater good. The bolded part is not a complete sentence. The entire thing should be one sentence. All-the-while does not require hyphenation. The two differing approaches of development already described, eventually led to the development of the two original branches of widgetry; fingleish and fnordleish. This sentence is mispunctuated. The comma is confusing and should be removed, and the semicolon should be a colon. Another of essays, Smith's ideas was the method of differentiation. The university re-opened after the essay hotel 12th, plague in 1667. Smith was elected to macbeth a minor fellowship, and awarded a major fellowship after he received his Master's Degree (Bogus 4).

After the realization that Calculus was important, and was being recognized, a document to record all of the theories became a necessity. The Methodis Differantium, the document that contained the elements of the theory of differentiation, was created in 1667. Essay Room Floor? Smith believed he was being pulled in two directions when it came to publishing his theories and making his work known. He felt a need for fame and fortune, yet on theory the other hand he had an abundant fear of rejection. To the dismay of many future mathematicians, it was never published because of Smith's fear of criticism. Since he was not focusing on essay hotel room 12th publishing his work, Smith pursued his career as a professor. This so-called paragraph is an utter mess.

There are far too many ideas in it, all of which are strung together haphazardly without any logical flow. I'll try to dissect and solution rewrite it, but I won't make errors bold because the entire paragraph would be bold if I did. First, let's pick out the different topics being addressed: the method of hotel room 12th, differentiation the university re-opening after the plague Smith's ascension through the essay shock, university ranks the need of a document detailing differentiation, which was eventually created Smith's mental state, desires and hotel floor fears. Now, if we replace each sentence with the number of the corresponding idea, we can see what a jumbled mess this is: 1, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 4, 3. Don't introduce a paragraph with one topic and then leap to another topic in the next sentence. On The Role In Education? While it may sometimes be necessary to mention something as an aside to floor complement the topic, the outlining essays, return to the topic should be swift and easy to understand.

Don't bounce around within the paragraph as this student has done. Another problem: there doesn't seem to be a coherent timeline within the hotel room floor, paragraph. Did the university re-open in 1667, or was the literary essays, plague in 1667? Is the student saying that Smith was elected to room 12th floor a minor fellowship that year or another year? Similarly, when did the major fellowship and Master's Degree come in?

It's unlikely to small scale industries have all happened in one year, though it is hotel, possible. Solution? The document was created in 1667, it seems, but when did Smith decide not to publish and seek work as a professor instead? Also 1667? It sounds like that was a very busy year for poor Smith! The sentences themselves are also awkwardly constructed, making the hotel room, entire thing hard to understand. I'll make some assumptions regarding the confusing date information. Here is how this information should have been presented: Smith's ideas on the method of differentiation were gaining recognition in theme essay the mathematical community, which made it necessary for him to produce a document detailing all of his theories on the subject. Room? Thus, when the university re-opened in 1667 following the plague and Smith was elected to a minor fellowship, he wrote Methodis Differantium. Although Smith wished to attain fame and macbeth essay fortune, he also feared rejection.

This dichotomy resulted in essay room 12th floor his failure to publish Methodis Differantium; a failure that would be mourned by essays on the of technology in education mathematicians well into the future. Still, Smith was awarded a major fellowship after receiving his Master's Degree in [insert year]. Since he was not interested in publishing his work, he concentrated instead on 12th floor pursuing a position as a professor. Queen Esmerelda knighted Jones in 1705 to role of technology in education be given the title of Sir Joe Smith, which made him the first scientist to be so honored for his work (Bogus) . The phrase to room 12th floor be given is awkward here. It would be better written: Queen Esmerelda knighted Jones in 1705, which gave him the title of Sir. Who else could be honoured for Smith's work other than Smith? It should say: . Outlining Essays? which made him the first man to be honored for scientific work. There probably should be a page number listed in the citation. Jones had a main idea of essay hotel 12th floor, analytic geometry. What does this mean?

Does the student mean that one of Jones' main ideas concerned analytic geometry? Does he mean that one of the main ideas of analytic geometry was conceived by Jones? Or does he mean something else entirely? This makes little sense and is very awkward. Whether Smith made no use of the phd thesis small scale, manuscript from which he had copied abstracts , or whether he had previously invented the widgetiscope, are questions on hotel 12th which at this distance of time no direct evidence is available . If Smith made no use of the manuscript, he can't have used it to copy abstracts. Literary? This is a very awkward way of saying that the events in question happened so long ago that there is no longer sufficient evidence to answer certain questions. It would be better written: Questions as to whether Smith made further use of the manuscript from which he copied abstracts or whether he had previously invented the widgetiscope are rooted so far in the past that it is impossible to gather sufficient direct evidence to provide answers. This is still a bit awkward. Essay 12th? It's best when broken up into smaller sentences:

There are still questions as to whether Smith made further use of the manuscript from which he copied abstracts or whether he had previously invented the essays on the role in education, widgetiscope. Such questions are rooted so far in the past, however, that it is impossible to gather sufficient direct evidence to essay room 12th provide answers. Smith formed a political plan to try to dissertation successful persuade the Germans to attack the French due to him not agreeing with their political agendas and hotel 12th this proved the means of his visiting Hamburg. Due to him not agreeing with is theory essays, a very awkward way of saying: because he disagreed with. The second bolded part should be a separate sentence. Proved the means of his visiting is a very awkward way of saying is why he visited. Jones explained ideas too enormous to understand, and simplified problems too complex to approach. Not only is floor, this hyperbole, it's also logically impossible.

If the ideas were too complicated to understand, Jones couldn't have understood them himself. If the problems were too complex to approach, Jones could not have approached them. Mismatched Words, Phrases, and Pronouns. After marrying Elizabeth, Smith's father fell ill for several months. Literary Theory Essays? After no sign of essay 12th, recovery, a lawyer was summoned to the manor. A will was drawn up, including one hundred acres of land, the manor house, livestock, grain, and Smith Senior's death (Bogus 10). His mother gave birth to Smith three months after Smith senior died. Dissertation Successful? He was premature after suffering from essay hotel illness due to the shock of literary theory essays, her husband's passing during the essay hotel 12th, fall . The phrase after no sign of recovery is not properly attached to Smith's father. Instead, it is saying that the lawyer did not recover from something. A will does not include land, a house, etc.

It states to whom such things are bequeathed. This should say: A will was drawn up leaving one hundred acres of land, the manor house, livestock and grain to [whomever]. I don't even understand how and Smith Senior's death fits into this sentence. His in the sentence His mother gave birth. refers to the antecedent Smith Senior. Thus, Smith Senior's mother gave birth to Smith Senior's son. That would necessitate incest, and is clearly not what the student meant to say. They should have simply said Elizabeth gave birth. Who else but someone's mother gives birth to them anyway?

Given the confusions regarding the various Smiths, it would have been better if the student had used first names during this part of the essay. Theory? There is inconsistency in capitalization. Hotel? It is Smith Senior once, and Smith senior another time. The he in outlining he was premature again refers to the wrong antecedent. Smith Senior was not premature.

Smith did not suffer illness due to the shock of Smith Senior's passing. Elizabeth did. This sentence says that Smith suffered the room floor, illness. The student suddenly introduces the phrase during the fall when no other mention of the essays in education, season has been made. This could be confused with Smith Senior dying from room 12th floor a fall. Lastly, the inverse relationship between area and the tangent were never attained. The relationship is singular, even though it refers to multiple elements. Thus, the verb were should be singular as well, and changed to was. It was this century where many of the worlds most honorable and highly respected mathematicians created what we know today as calculus.

A century is not a place, it is small scale, a section of time. Say it is a place where. or a time when. In this case, It was this century when. Adding an 's' without an apostrophe in this case is pluralization, not indicative of essay hotel room floor, possession. The student means world's. But perhaps the largest obstacle , which the Greeks could not overcome, were their insufficient number and measuring system . Were is plural, but obstacle and system are singular. Phd Thesis Small Scale? It should be was. Tragically at the age of six, Smith's father died. This says that Smith's father died at the age of essay, six.

The student means: Tragically, when Smith was six years old his father died. Jones, now familiar with Smith's discoveries, wrote Smith a letter soon after the publication of his discoveries. After the publication of whose discoveries: Jones' or Smith's? Jones reasoned that if he could calculate the angles of the projected colour, a new law of refraction could be made . People can make legal laws, but natural or scientific laws are discovered. To make a new law of refraction, Jones would have to alter physics. During the seventeenth century, the inhabitants of England did not realize the importance of scientific advancement. Inhabitants could well mean non-human creatures, and is thus a poor choice of solution shock, a word.

Are we to understand that ALL of the people in England failed to realize the importance of scientific advancement for an entire century? It would have been better if the student had said most people in England. At the current time, the dominant belief was that light traveled in wave . The current time is the moment the reader is reading the sentence. The student meant to say that the belief was such during the historical time period being discussed. Current should be omitted. Hotel Room 12th? The phrase in wave has an error. It should either be in waves or in a wave. Macbeth Theme Essay? Both may be correct, but such an hotel room floor, error can be misunderstood if one is incorrect. This would likely have been caught if the student had read the paper out loud. Secondly, Jones' reliance on geometric algebra rather than symbolic notation created considerable impedance to the identification of solutions of computational features found frequently to different problems. Here is an example of a student not knowing the proper meaning of a word.

Impedance means opposition to the flow of literary theory, electric current. It does not mean the same as to impede, which is to be an obstacle. This could be an instance where a student used the thesaurus in a word processor to essay room 12th come up with a word without bothering to check if the phd thesis small scale industries, word fit the context. It could also simply be that the student had mislearned the word themselves. Incidentally, a quick check of MS Word 97 shows synonyms to impedance to be obstruction, block, baffle, hindrance, breakwater, fin, and essay room floor maze. Outlining Essays? So here is direct proof that you shouldn't always trust what a word processor thesaurus tells you is an equivalent word. Be diligent and look up unfamiliar words in the dictionary before using them in your essay. In studying widgetry, it serves as great importance that one is aware of the two systems of 12th floor, widgetry; fingleish and fnordleish. Something does not serve as great importance, and one being aware doesn't fit either.

This is essays on the role, a student trying to 12th floor sound fancy but instead making no sense. The sentence should read: In studying widgetry, one should be aware of the macbeth ambition, two systems of widgetry; fingleish and fnordleish. It was thought that Jones hated his stepfather and his mother, partly for essay room abandoning him at such a young age. Who thought so? This entire statement, which implies something that cannot be proven and is thus not a basic fact, had no attribution in the essay. Essay Culture? Since it was about someone historical and hotel room floor the student couldn't possibly have known this unless they got it from a source, it was plagiarism to include it without attribution. Smith managed one friendship through this time and the value of role of technology, that is hotel, always questioned. Who is questioning the value? There is no attribution to explain who questions it or to prove that it is questioned by anyone other than the student.

What precisely is being questioned? The value of only ambition having one friend, or the value of the one friendship to hotel Smith in particular? . which means that the small scale industries, cut in the # of points is equal to the degree of the curve. Using the # symbol instead of the word number is a bad short cut, and certainly inappropriate for a formal essay. Smith also helped to improve the essay room 12th, scientific community ; his focus was mainly regarding widgetry. How does a focus on secret a subject help to improve a community? It might improve the essay 12th, understanding of the subject in the community, but does that improve the community itself? This is a badly worded assertion. If it truly did benefit the scientific community as a whole, the student should cite a source demonstrating that to phd thesis small scale be the case.

No attribution was present. In one day, John's attitude towards school changed for the better. A boy ranked just above him kicked him in the stomach. At the end of the day John challenged the essay room 12th floor, boy to a fight. Even though John was much smaller than his opponent, his determination overtook the essays of technology, boy. Winning the fight was still not enough. John applied himself in room class, and soon became the literary, top student in the school. This entire paragraph introduces an anecdote for essay hotel 12th floor the purpose of explaining what drove John to become a better student. Incredibly, it manages to completely fail to mention the phd thesis small scale, relationship between the anecdote and John's new-found classroom enthusiasm. The relationship is implied and the reader can guess that John wished to beat the boy in more than just a physical fight, and thus worked hard to outrank the boy in essay hotel room 12th the classroom, but that is macbeth ambition, not stated.

The paragraph is very choppy and the sentences do not flow well. Read it out loud, and you'll hear how it sounds like a grade school book instead of hotel floor, a university essay. During this time, Smith constructed a water clock. He constructed the clock out of an old box. This is choppy. Essays Of Technology In Education? It could be easily combined into one sentence.

Jones became began to study motion. This error was probably due to a sentence that once legitimately contained the word became being edited without became being removed. Hotel Room? If the student had read the essay out loud or given it to a friend to read, this error likely would have been noticed. Yet, in 1679, Jones would discover that his initial calculation the Moon's distance from Earth was incorrect. Here is another example of literary, a simple error of omission that could have been caught if the student had read the essay aloud or given it to room 12th floor a friend to read. The word of should be between calculation and the. That one small error makes the theory essays, entire sentence awkward and confusing.

If the instructor has to reread the sentence to try to understand its meaning, the room 12th floor, flow of the essay is interrupted. If this happens often enough in phd thesis small the essay, it gives an overall bad impression on hotel room 12th floor what otherwise might be a very good paper in terms of research. More examples of successful, errors that could have been caught if the students had bothered to read their essay: One of essay, Smith's main contribution was his use of. Widgetry emphasized the outlining essays, notion of the infinite widget, which in fact cam as a great service to Smith in that it served as an important too in helping explain his branch of hotel room, widgetry. Jones might have in fact perputuated the ideas, but he was also at solution culture a loss when he could not make good sense of floor, them from the beginning. Admiration for literary Smith grew in the filed of widgetry. With Jones' encouragement, Smith drafter a number of monographs on room religious topics. Smith considers out universe to be a gravitational system.

On August 10, 1777, Jones was ent a letter from. In later research , it was proven that Jones was incorrect and science rejected his theories about light until the next century. Thus, it was scientifically proven that Jones' theories about quanta (tiny particulate packets of energy) were indeed correct . The wave formulation was also correct . When was this later research? Who performed the phd thesis small scale industries, research? In discussing whether someone was proven incorrect or not, it is a good idea to fully explain who did the proving when, and possibly even how they came to their conclusion. These sentences contradict each other. Was Jones proven incorrect or correct? Does the student mean that Jones was erroneously proven incorrect, but science later found that he was correct after all? Or was Jones correct about some things and not others?

The use of Thus implies causality. How does the proof that Jones is incorrect and the rejection by science suddenly become scientific proof of his theory being correct? Regardless of what the student meant by essay room 12th the flip from incorrect to correct, there is nothing given to establish causality. It's disappointing to see such sloppiness as this in an essay. This particular essay featured clipart, so it was obviously done on solution a computer with a modern word processor. It clearly wasn't spell-checked. Such complete disregard is automatically indicative of a student who doesn't care about their final product, and while the error itself is essay room 12th floor, minor, it gives a bad impression to the grader. Macbeth Ambition Essay? In fact, this essay had several spelling errors that could have been caught. That's inexcusable at the university level. It was also during this time that he traveled to his uncle's place in Brunswick. Place is colloquial.

Use home, apartment, residence or other such appropriate word instead. Smith attempted to obtain his doctorate of law degree at the University of Anytown but was denied because positions were being held for the older students -- and hotel room Smith was much too young. Smith's secretary claims that he was told many times, however, that Smith was denied admission because of phd thesis small industries, negative feelings that the Dean's wife held for him. Smith's secretary is probably dead, since this essay is about someone from the 19th century. Therefore, they no longer claim anything.

It should be past tense. Since the student doesn't cite this, there is an implication that perhaps the secretary is room 12th, not dead and the student went so far as to interview the secretary personally. That is, of course, quite unlikely, meaning that this student has plagiarised this information from solution shock one of their sources. The following are a few concepts that form the basis of Leibnizian calculus: [followed by three bulleted paragraphs comprised mostly of essay 12th floor, direct quotation] Using bullets in a formal essay is small scale, rarely appropriate.

It is preferable to write out the bulleted information into proper paragraph form. This student seems to have been too lazy to essay hotel room 12th floor bother paraphrasing a bunch of direct quotations into a formal essay structure. Along came the Joe Smith, a mathematician considered by numerous scholars to be a pioneer of calculus, including other renowned mathematician, Bill Jones. The Joe Smith? There has only been one? The student means another, not other. Sloppy. The first page of the essay starts with: have been developed (5). The second page starts with the header Introduction and the opening paragraph. Clearly, the student stapled the pages out of literary theory, order. What a sloppy mistake!

Pages should be numbered unless you're specifically instructed not to for some reason, and you should always ensure that all of the pages are present and in proper order before binding the essay. If the essay hotel room, instructor has to begin by figuring out what the heck is going on, they will automatically have a bad impression of your essay and literary theory possibly of you. Jones was quite a busy man in that along with his position in essay room floor the Court of Mainz, he also managed to literary theory serve as Baron Johann Christian von Boineburg as secretary, librarian, lawyer, advisor, assistant, and essay room floor most importantly, friend. Quite a busy man is a bit colloquial. A busy man would do. The first as is an error, since Jones did not serve as the Baron, he served the Baron. This may have been caught if the student had read their essay out loud. His Chummy, Bill Jones, who Smith shared a room with until his resignation from this fellowship in 1683. Chummy should only be included if it was Smith's actual word for scale industries Jones. If this is the case, it is a quotation from a source and should be cited.

If not, it is colloquial and should just say His friend Bill Jones. Who should be whom in this case. A site called Grammar and Style has information on how to use who and whom. This isn't even a complete sentence. Smith was born prematurely and was so small when he was born that they thought he might not live. Repeating that he was born is room 12th floor, redundant. Who does they refer to? Doctors? Parents?

Relatives? Townsfolk? It is a pronoun without an antecedent. In this publication, Jones has a discourse between the belief systems of the natural philosophical world around him. Has is the wrong word here because the essay is about a person who is literary, now dead. Hotel Room Floor? Dead people don't have discourse with anyone in the present, so the word should at least be had. But even had is awkward, and a better word would be wrote. Discourse means to converse, especially orally. One does not speak orally in a publication. It is written.

This word should be omitted. Between denotes at least two participants, but Jones is the only one having the supposed discourse. This too should be omitted. Natural philosophical world is confusing. Does the student mean the natural, philosophical world, which would be the world described as both natural and philosophical? Or do they mean natural philosophical world, in which natural modifies philosophical and not world, in which case the grammatically correct phrase would be naturally philosophical world? This would be better written as: In this publication, Jones wrote of the belief systems of the natural, philosophical world around him. or, depending on the answer to the fourth point:

In this publication, Jones wrote of the belief systems of the naturally philosophical world around him. He was home for approximately 18 months, according to Jones the 18 months was the most predominant time period of his life. This is essay, a run-on sentence. It should either end between 18 months and according, or it should be rewritten to essay room floor make it a proper sentence. 18 months is repeated for no reason. Theme Ambition? 18 months is plural, so it should be 18 months were not 18 months was. Room? Predominant means superior especially in power or numbers. Something cannot be most superior. Most should be omitted. Predominant is not the best word in small scale this case anyway. If the student means it was the essay hotel room 12th floor, most powerful time of theory essays, Jones' life, they should be clear about that.

If they mean it was the most superior numerical time of his life, then he logically cannot have been more than 36 months old. Simpson was content after his ability to reproduce Smith's experiment. Essay Room 12th? Jones was not that easy, the literary, two men fought constantly. The student probably means that Simpson was content once he was able to reproduce Smith's experiment. The current phrasing doesn't quite say that, and is awkward and confusing. Jones was not that easy to what? The student probably means Jones was not that easy to room satisfy or something equivalent. This is a run-on sentence. It should end after easy, or be rewritten to be grammatically correct. Which two men? Simpson and Jones or Smith and phd thesis scale industries Jones?

The information on 12th floor physics before this section is important to understanding whom Newton was, but arguably, his greatest advancements were in the field of phd thesis scale industries, mathematics, most importantly Calculus. Incorrect use of 12th, whom. Should be who. A site called Grammar and Style has information on how to use who and whom. There should not be a comma between arguably and his. There is no citation as to anyone arguing that Newton's greatest advancements were in outlining mathematics. This might be because it would be difficult to prove in the face of the importance of hotel room, Newtonian physics.

Advancements is probably the wrong word. Achievements or discoveries would be better. Newton's advancements are more likely to be funds paid in advance of publication. The addition of most importantly is awkward. Particularly would have been a better word. The use of greatest and most importantly referring to Calculus is hyperbole. Essays Role? Given that this essay was for a Calculus class, it sounds like a kiss-up. The declarations of superiority are superfluous, unattributed, probably erroneous, and possibly pandering. It's all very ugly. A concluding sentence: Smith's great work, theories, and studies will continue to live on hotel floor forever in the ever-changing world of science and mathematics . How can the student know that Smith's work will live on forever?

That's an impossible assertion to literary essays make. Work, theories and studies don't live. They exist, but they are not organic creatures. If the world is ever-changing, how again can the student know that Smith's work won't one day be considered nonsense? Or lost entirely? World is singular, but it refers to two worlds, one of science and one of mathematics. This conclusion reeks of hyperbole. (So does the essay room floor, phrase reeks of hyperbole, but this is not a formal essay.) A scientist before Smith by the name of Jones knew that he could demonstrate the ration between two infinite sums. The phrasing here is a bit awkward. It would be better phrased: Jones, a predecessor of Smith, knew that.

Ration is the wrong word. The student meant ratio. This is one of those errors that a spell-check cannot find, but if the essay had been read aloud it may have been noticed. One man was proclaiming to be the successful, inventor of the widgetiscope and another man was proclaiming the exact same thing; who is telling the truth? The main problem here is the change in tense. 12th? You can't go from was to is if the subject remains fixed in time.

Furthermore, it is incorrect to refer to essays someone who is dead as doing anything in the present besides being dead (and possibly rotting). A dead person is not telling anything right now, but they were in essay hotel floor the past. Literary? Try to essay room avoid using the passive form was proclaiming and essays instead use proclaimed. This particular statement is also bad because of the essay room 12th, subject matter. The student has already shown in the essay that both men happened to independently invent the widgetiscope, but the ambition essay, issue is who deserved the essay hotel room 12th floor, title for inventing it first . Theory Essays? So actually, neither one was necessarily lying, and the student should not make it appear that one or the other may have been doing so. You must be careful not to essay floor libel people. The phrasing here is awkward and industries possibly a bit too conversational in the final question. A better way of hotel room floor, writing this would be: Two men proclaimed to be the inventor of calculus, but only role in education one could be given the credit. The argument was so drawn out essay hotel 12th floor, that a decision was not easy to come by essays on the which worked against Smith's favor.

Jones had been considered the sole inventor of the widgetiscope for fifteen years already, which gave him the upper hand. The student meant to say that the duration of the argument caused Smith to lose. But because the student failed to put the necessary comma between the bolded words, this sentence actually says, by means of a complicated string of multiple negatives, that it was not easy to come to 12th a decision against Smith, meaning he won. This sentence would be better worded this way: Because the argument took so long, Smith lost. But then, at secret the beginning of the next paragraph, the student writes: The argument took years to unravel and never really came to room 12th a definitive decision.

This negates what the student had asserted before: that Smith lost because of the literary theory, duration of the argument. Room? This also repeats the fact that it was a long argument, which is redundant. It was from the Greeks, where the underlying of widgetry emerged and set the basis of what widgetry has become. The Greeks are a people, not a place, so things come from whom, not where. The comma in this sentence should not be there.

It sets up an expectation that the portion after the comma is a separate clause, as in: It was from the Greeks, who also invented blodgetry, that widgetry came forth. Note that because the who is in the separate clause, it should not be whom. The underlying what ? You can't just say the secret, underlying of widgetry. It has to be the underlying something of widgetry, whether that something is basis, foundation, etc. Although there was a time of intellectual heightening , there came a period of darkness in the development of essay hotel 12th floor, mathematics (Ewards 45) . Intellectual heightening is an icky, awkward phrase. Intellectual development would have been much better. In going over this old essay, I wondered if perhaps this was a typo of the name Edwards. I checked the bibliography to confirm the name, and discovered that nothing by dissertation secret Ewards, Edwards, or any similar name was there at all. Had this gone noticed when the paper was being graded, serious questions would have been raised as to the validity of the student's sources and bibliography. 12th? Be sure to list all sources in small scale your bibliography, and be sure to spell them correctly when citing! One motive of Sumerian algebra was to impose on themselves a concepts that they could not fully understand and precisely compute, and for this reason, rejected concepts of hotel, irrational as numbers, all traces of the infinite, such as limit concepts, from their own mathematics.

Motive applies to Sumerian algebra, not Sumerians. Therefore, that motive cannot be imposed on themselves. It should be written: One motive of the essay, Sumerians concerning their algebra was to impose on room floor themselves. although that is still an awkward phrase. Concepts should not be plural. This is sloppiness that probably could have been detected if the essays, student had bothered to read over essay hotel 12th his essay. The sentence should end after compute.

A new sentence should begin, For this reason. The word they should be put between reason and rejected to theory essays say: For this reason, they rejected concepts. This sentence is so garbled with mismatched subclauses that adding another is just icky. I'd put such as limit concepts in parenthesis, or rewrite the sentence to bring that idea out on its own. If Greek rigor had surmounted their need to succeed in these elements and essay 12th floor refused to in education use real numbers and hotel room 12th limits till they had finally understood them, calculus may have never formed and mathematics as a whole would be obsolete (Apostal 102). The verb refused applies to Greek rigor, not Greeks, which is nonsensical. Be careful to ensure that your verbs match the subject you intend for them. Don't use till when you mean until. That's colloquial at best, and not really a proper use of the word at all at worst. The proper phrase is phd thesis industries, have never been formed. To say something never formed begs the question: What didn't it form?

Even though there is a citation for essay hotel room 12th this extreme declaration that mathematics as a whole would be obsolete, it's still probably hyperbole. I wonder if the literary, source actually said that, or if the student's paraphrasing has overstated the source's point that mathematics might be different without the essay 12th floor, advent of calculus. Be careful that you don't paraphrase in such a way as to claim a source said something that they did not. If this source really says mathematics would be obsolete without calculus, it's a bad source. Such a statement would render even basic arithmetic and counting as obsolete, which is ridiculous. Essentially , it is literary theory essays, a case of Smith's word against a number of hotel, suspicious details pointing against him.

He acknowledged possession of essay, a copy of part of one of 12th floor, Jones' manuscripts, on more than one occasion he deliberately altered or added to important documents before publishing them, and a material date I none of his manuscripts had been falsified (1675 had been changed to 1673) (Bogus, 78) Essentially isn't technically incorrect here, but students do have a tendency to use words like essentially and literary essays basically too often. It's somewhat conversational, and possibly colloquial. Essay Hotel Floor? Try to avoid it unless something is phd thesis small scale, truly essential. A number of suspicious details pointing against essay hotel him is an awkward way of saying: suspicions of his guilt. But what the student means is not suspicions, but points of outlining essays, evidence.

When you list several examples of something you've indicated, the way to punctuate it is hotel room floor, as follows (note the outlining essays, placement of the room, colon and subsequent semicolons): [Point being made]:[proof 1];[proof 2];[proof 3]; and[proof 4]. This way each proof can have punctuation such as commas without being confused with other points, and each proof still points to the main part of the sentence. This entire thing should be rewritten to say: It is dissertation secret, a case of Smith's word against the evidence of his guilt: he acknowledged possession of a copy of Jones' manuscripts; on more than one occasion he deliberately altered or added to important documents before publishing them; and his manuscripts had been falsified by changing 1675 to 1673 (Bogus, 78). After quoting a dictionary definition: The editors of the famous dictionary are probably unaware of the fact that they have just committed a cardinal sin in the mathematical world , in hotel 12th that they only described fingleish widgetry, and failed to include an explanation of fnordleish widgetry. It's okay to culture shock question a source, and at higher levels of education it might even be required. But if you're going to do it, be careful to do it well and with evidence. This just sounds presumptuous. The student has not shown whether or not the dictionary has separate definitions for widgetry or otherwise accounts for its apparent lack of sufficient definition. Essay Room 12th Floor? Saying the outlining essays, dictionary is famous is probably unnecessary, and possibly hyperbole.

A cardinal sin is a sin of fundamental importance. In the Judeo-Christian context, this would mean something very bad, like murder. Thus, calling a disagreement in definition in a dictionary a cardinal sin is definitely hyperbole. Even if it was a cardinal sin, the sin was committed in the dictionary, not in the mathematical world. The student meant against the mathematical world. It is surprising how people could be satisfied such a vague definition, as was the essay hotel, case in Webster's Dictionary, on a subject that has tested such great minds for centuries upon centuries . It is surprising how students could be satisfied with such drivel in their essays. That sounds nasty, doesn't it?

That's because it is. Sentences like this are insulting and essays on the of technology off-putting, and don't belong in room floor a formal essay. Such great minds requires an example. Small Industries? The word such should be omitted. Centuries upon essay hotel centuries is redundant. Just say centuries and theme ambition leave it at essay hotel room floor that. Jones' first object in Paris was to make contact with the French government but, while waiting for such an essays, opportunity, he made contact with mathematicians and philosophers there, in particular Davis and Myers, discussing with Davis a variety of hotel room floor, topics but particularly church reunification (Bugle 57). An object is a thing. The student means Jones' first objective.

This is a bad run-on. It should be broken up like this: Jones' first objective in literary Paris was to make contact with the hotel room 12th floor, French government, but while waiting for an opportunity to do so, he made contact with mathematicians and philosophers such as Davis and Myers. He discussed a variety of topics with Davis, particularly church reunification (Bugle 57). Smith's contribution to math has helped our society become more technological in building things . In this particular case, Smith made many contributions, not just one. Math is the colloquial version of mathematics.

Did Smith's contributions only help our society? What about other societies? More technological in building things is a really awkward way of saying improved our technological aptitude. Undoubtedly, Jones was one of the greatest geniuses that ever lived and outlining this paper will demonstrate that, starting from his childhood until his death . Smith may have been a genius, but to blow that up to one of the greatest geniuses that ever lived is essay 12th, hyperbole. Even if it is true, the paper didn't demonstrate it because the phd thesis, paper didn't compare Smith to other great geniuses that have lived. The paper showed that Smith was a genius, perhaps, but not his rank amongst all of the geniuses that have ever lived. If you start from something, you go to essay hotel room floor or follow through to another something. The phrase starting from essay solution culture his childhood until his death actually means you're starting from the section of time inclusively between his childhood and death and essay room not saying where you're going. Furthermore, the paper does not start from Smith's childhood because it was not being written when Smith was a child. The student means, starting with his childhood and following through to his death. That is essay solution culture, still awkward, and the sentence would be best written:

Undoubtedly, Jones was a genius, and this paper will demonstrate that by examining his entire life. So John lived for seven years with his mother's parents who did not really show him any affection . So in this context is colloquial and should be omitted. This really should be cited. John's address may be a matter of public record and therefore doesn't have to be cited, but comments on the emotional quality of the household imply research, and the student should give credit to the source. Really is hotel floor, colloquial, and should be omitted. While at Cambridge, Smith's genius was most productive in his dedication to theory essays math . Who is hotel room 12th floor, Smith's genius? The student means Smith's intellect, but an intellect cannot be productive. It facilitates productivity, but it is not productive itself. A better way to write this would be: Smith's intellect was best displayed in his dedication. Math is colloquial. Outlining Essays? It should be mathematics.

This information helps us to understand how we, as humans stay on hotel room floor the ground; we are matter as well and do have an invisible force weighing us down as we push against it and it pushes back against us . This hand full of macbeth, knowledge has helped our scientist understand our universe of essay 12th, heavenly bodies and their movement. It has also allowed scientist to delve further in exploring our galaxy. Does gravity only affect humans? Granted, the student is trying to make the science seem more personal, but this is an awkward way of doing it. It is also something that seems to indicate an essay geared to children. While you should usually write essays so they can be understood by laypersons, you can assume those laypersons are your age and essays intellectual peers.

The description of the invisible force is very awkward. A better wording would be: do have an invisible force that we push against as it pushes back against us. Hotel Room 12th Floor? Gravity does not, in fact, weigh people down. The student's own definition of it earlier in the essay mentions this, and here too it is literary, accurately described as a push, not a pull. To add in the bit about it weighing us down is contradictory. Essay Hotel Floor? The student means handful. This is a bad description anyway, since the student is trying to show how this knowledge is monumental to scientists. Both instances of scientist should be pluralized. One delves further into essays role something, not in it.

The Royal Society always had someone coming in each week they met to essay hotel room floor show off their invention . Always had someone coming in is colloquial and macbeth ambition essay awkward. It should say: The Royal Society hosted a guest each week. The second part of this is a separate sentence and should be capitalized and punctuated accordingly, or else brought into the first sentence with appropriate conjunctions. Show off is hotel floor, colloquial. Demonstrate would be better. Since more than one invention was demonstrated, invention should be plural.

A concluding paragraph: Jones was a great man who made an essay, impact in all of our lives . He is recognized as one of the centuries brilliant-minded people who helped to essay hotel 12th floor further math along. Solution Shock? This intellectual man has created something which has and 12th will be used for years to come. This is an important part of phd thesis small industries, history which will and should never be forgotten. The essay has shown that Jones was brilliant and invented some useful things. It has not, however, demonstrated that he was a great man. A great man is one that embodies greatness in essay room all things, including attitude, relationships with others, and their contributions to their society. Jones may have been all of this, but the essay did not reflect it, so it is role of technology, hyperbole to declare it in the conclusion. It is essay hotel room 12th, also a highly subjective comment; what makes someone great to theme ambition essay one person may not for another.

Centuries is the plural of century, not the possessive. Essay Room Floor? The student means century's. Dissertation? But Jones was not of our current century, so the student should define which century they mean. Impacts are made on, not in. If by all of us the hotel room, student means everyone on the planet, this is incorrect. Jones' contributions to mathematics hardly impact the life of someone living in a non-literate, non-industrialized society. Even if the macbeth essay, student merely means her peers, it is still hyperbole to declare that everyone has been impacted. If you're going to mention that the person did something in hotel room 12th your conclusion, mention what that something is. While it is unlikely that Jones' history will be forgotten, the student cannot effectively predict the future in this way. Some of these comments may seem nitpicky, but the fact of the matter is errors such as these reflect poorly on you and your essay.

No one is perfect, and an essay with one or two awkward phrases won't be marked down just for those instances. But an essays, essay that is full of the errors listed above prevents the reader from room understanding the content. If the instructor doesn't know what you mean, they can't possibly give you a good grade. Last updated in outlining essays February 2005. Copyright #169 2000-2005 Kimberly Chapman. Essay Hotel 12th? 3 Rules to Write World-Changing Memoir. I love memoir, always have. Anne Lamott, David Sedaris, Annie Dillard, even Stephen King. There#8217;s something magical about the hotel 12th ability to transform ordinary circumstances into essays on the of technology in education, beautiful scenes that teach a deeper truth. Photo by hotel 12th, Christian Gonzalez. Twenty years ago, it seemed the only people qualified to write memoir were the incredibly famous and the I#8217;m-so-disgustingly-rich-I#8217;d-better-write-a-book elite. The rest of theory essays us had better keep our mouths shut… or turn our life#8217;s story into a novel. But recently, more #8220;normal#8221; people are writing powerful reflections on everyday life. So what#8217;s to stop you and me from room 12th floor, joining them?

This logic led me to write my second trade book, a memoir. While writing it, I learned a few important lessons about writing that apply to anyone wanting to communicate a true story. Here are my three #8220;rules#8221; of writing memoir: The biggest mistake you can make in telling your story is to tell it all. To expose every detail and explain every aspect of what happened. To tell us every word everyone said. The problem is literary theory, our stories are rarely as interesting as we think. As my writing mentor Marion says, #8220;Just because it happened doesn#8217;t make it interesting.#8221; Your memories always mean more to you than they do to essay hotel room 12th floor, other people.

So what do you do? Bend the truth? Change details? Lie? Of course not. Instead, you must be deliberate. Cut every scene, every detail, every piece of dialogue that doesn#8217;t drive the story forward and isn#8217;t directly connected to your central theme. All great writing is industries, thematic. Behind every compelling story, every memorable movie, every interesting documentary is a theme. This is essay floor, especially true with memoir.

What is a theme? It#8217;s a universal idea we all grapple with, something anyone can understand. Good themes remind us of what is right and good and true in dissertation secret successful, the world — or at least, what we would like to be. A few examples of good themes are: Courage in essay hotel floor, the face of opposition The conflict between mercy and dissertation secret successful justice A parents loving sacrifice. The thing you cannot do when writing memoir is tell a bunch of stories. On the surface, that#8217;s what memoir appears to be, but it’s more than that. Good narrative nonfiction always connects the reader#8217;s heart to a deeper truth. Don#8217;t make the mistake of thinking memoir is autobiography. It#8217;s not. Memoir is about something bigger than you. Room 12th Floor. It#8217;s about a part of life we can all connect to.

Ironically, the way you accomplish is by focusing on the small, seemingly insignificant details. Where were you when you realized you were going to be a parent? What flavor of gum was your boyfriend chewing when he proposed? These are the details that mean the most to all us and what make us connect with you, so you can take us somewhere else. A good piece of memoir begins with the author#8217;s perspective but doesn#8217;t end there.

It leaves the reader—often implicitly—with a decision to make or action to take. When millions of college students read Blue Like Jazz , they had a framework for processing their faith in a postmodern world. Thousands began living more adventurously after reading Eat, Pray, Love . Role Of Technology In Education. And after finishing Same Kind of Different As Me , I was compelled to 12th floor, spend more time on the streets with the less-fortunate. Essays Role In Education. Good memoir is powerful. Essay Hotel 12th Floor. It can change lives, if you make it personal — not just for you, but for the reader. Essay Solution Shock. You know you#8217;ve done your job when a reader finishes your story about growing up in the Midwest and tells you it reminded her of summers spent in Maine with Grandma. Great writers work their way into our hearts by floor, being vulnerable, sharing the ugliest parts of their story, the parts any normal person would prefer to essays on the, hide. (Tweet that?) And that#8217;s what makes them so believable. Ever notice how self-effacing Anne Lamott can be, how crude David Sedaris sometimes is? There#8217;s a reason for that. They know their first job is to earn our trust.

And the best way to do that is to embarrass themselves, to expose their humanity. Essay Hotel Room 12th. How else will we believe them? If you are going to write memoir, if you are going to share a story that matters, then you must be willing to do the thing that so few people are willing to do. Secret. You must be human, at once whole and essay hotel room 12th floor incomplete. And if you do this well and honestly, we just might let you share some deeper truth. What do you look for in a good memoir? It’s time for you to write your memoir. Now that you know good narrative nonfiction is about more than where you were or what you were doing, you must pick a theme and begin telling your story. Phd Thesis Small Industries. So let’s start: Pick a theme for hotel room 12th floor, your memoir. What will it be about? Forgiveness?

Justice? Redemption? Overcoming fear? Choose something that is true for outlining essays, you and will be for others. Choose a scene in the story that is essay hotel floor, interesting, that drives the theme in some way. Write that scene, sharing personal details but also universal truths.

Check out Jeff#8217;s new book, The In-Between , a memoir about how to not waste our times of waiting. Find out more at inbetweenbook.com. Essays. Great advice, Jeff! My consciousness became more strained, and the next jolt of it was when I was rolled out to the ambulance on a stretcher. The summer day was beautiful, and I didn’t care to experience it. I was hit with such despair that my mind said I couldn’t take it, and yet everything around me was just pleasantly trekking through. It was in this realization that I was not the center of it all. Hotel 12th. I was just one of the pieces of this bigger spectrum of reality. Once I woke up one more time in the hospital to literary, swallow the coal to clean out room floor my body, it was over.

I survived yet another quagmire in my battle with schizoaffective disorder. Early in my childhood, when I was roughly 12, I realized things were changing. Not the normal “I grew hair in phd thesis small, places I didn’t know I had, and hotel room floor women are embarrassed to talk to me because of my mid-conversation squeak” phase. Instead, my thoughts were developing into something sinister. Negativity arose so gradually that by the time I was thirteen, I was hit head on. I remember being in my classroom, and literary a test was being handed out to room 12th, take. There was to be absolute silence for theory, 40 minutes to allow everyone to successfully complete the exam.

I have taken hundreds of tests before, with no avail, but this time was different. Hotel Room 12th. As ten minutes of silence went by, I started becoming restless. Whispers were surrounding me. “You’re a piece of shit.” “No one likes you here. You even see it yourself. End your life now.” “You won’t be successful.” The whispers started to even come at me in what appeared to be another language. I felt like I was in a movie that no one liked, and were trying to discuss their criticism. Essays Role Of Technology. There were a roomful of words that were whispered, and nothing was ever positive. I started shaking in my chair, hoping it would stop.

There were twitches in my arm, I started sweating. My breathing escalated, my heart pounded, and the conversations didn’t end. I looked around, and not a single classmate was uttering a word. Whispers were present, but not a mouth was moving. It was at this point that I asked to be excused, and jolted into 12th, the hall. I slammed my body against the wall, breathing rapidly, hoping that the whispers would come to a halt. I would talk to myself and, in repetition, say “They aren’t real.” Eventually the voices subsided, but my nerves did not. This was the evolution of literary essays my paranoia. Paranoia was also prevalent, even years before my hallucinations started occurring. Kids around me cared about essay, whatever fucking thing kids do.

I confess that I don’t really know what kids thought about. At a young age, I was thinking of grim and really poignant subjects. I felt as though people were out to poison me, with no evidence to corroborate the thought. Fast-food workers, relatives, and even my own mother were not exempt from this. Who inspects food products better than Sherlock Holmes could? Honestly, I might as well have had a thermocouple come standard with each meal. My mom’s meals were the essays ones I felt I should inspect the most. This had nothing to do with the quality of food she was preparing; she was, and still is, an excellent cook. I was always down upon myself as a child, and room 12th floor I would think that each mistake meant there needed to be some repercussion. What better repercussion would there be for of technology, a tantrum than death? A logical and morally uncompromising one would be the sufficient answer.

My mind would find the essay hotel worst way to theory, rationalize and deal with discontent. For example, I was known to take tantrums in public places. If there was something I didn’t care for, I was very outspoken about 12th, it. By outspoken, I mean that I would make incessant noises, including snorting sounds to essays on the, clear out the hotel room mucous from my headache-inducing cries. I took tantrums in such lovely places as the phd thesis industries movie theater (a crying child makes a blockbuster thriller much more thrilling), Wal-Mart, and even McDonald’s. When I got the small cheeseburger, there were all the toppings that made me cringe. Ketchup, mustard, pickles, and onions were topped onto a colossal waste of an animal. Any child that had a speck of decency could easily request the 12th floor burger to be replaced almost immediately. Essays On The Of Technology. I, unfortunately for room 12th, my parents, did not do such a thing. I remember how my parents would stare at me as I would open my food, hoping that the meal was satisfactory for phd thesis industries, me. This had nothing to do with them spoiling me, because we didn’t have enough money for room 12th, that to occur; my parents were terrified of macbeth theme my actions. I don’t blame them, because what I would do if there was the slightest mistake in hotel, my food was absolutely embarrassing. My body was thrown on the ground like I was a wrestling champion body slamming my opponent. Falling onto the ground is painful, but deliberately throwing oneself on the ground purposefully is ludicrous.

Hell, depending on my mood, shoes would be flown off in a frantic manner. I would scream and twitch as though there was a man with a knife stabbing me. What did my parents do in all of this? They turned glaring red and angrily stared in direction of my pathetic outrage. I can still remember my dad’s veins pulsating on his temple because he couldn’t let out his rage. Secret Successful. Corporal punishment was seen in essay room floor, such an unflattering light at macbeth essay, the time, but I still think it should have been acceptable for my parents in moments such as that.

The only thing more ridiculous than my tantrums was the reason I had them; the tantrums existed over a paranoia that people were out to retaliate upon me in essay hotel room floor, some way shape or form. Oh, there is macbeth, a mistake on some type of food? I want to upset that child. People are staring in my direction? I want to kidnap and room floor harm that child.

These illogical thoughts were a constant flood that I accepted. The acceptance of the secret thoughts turned into anger and hotel 12th aggression to outlining, those who would “wrong me.” Those are when the hotel room 12th tantrums occurred, mainly for retaliation purposes. After I was done with my phase of tantrums, my thoughts proactively shifted into what people would do to get back at me. Each chicken dinner was followed by me raising the food up to the light, like it was some type of delicate relic, just to essay 12th, inspect it. There had to outlining, not be an inkling of pink in the chicken. The side dishes received special treatment from me too. In the hotel room 12th floor late #8217;90s, when Titanic hit big, Molly Brown was once again a hot property. And Mollyphiles already had their musical, the toe-tapping frolic The Unsinkable Molly Brown starring Debbie Reynolds.

But a few years later, a playwright friend of Ernie#8217;s decided to forego the tunes, and strip Molly#8217;s life down to a one-woman show. Starring Ernie as Molly. Naturally. I had nothing to do with The Ghost of Molly Brown. Although I tried. #8220;A bare stage,#8221; I said. #8220;Nothing but a sectional sofa. Circular. White leather. Maybe a small table. Outlining. And a rotary phone. Room Floor. Let#8217;s give it a #8217;70s vibe.#8221; #8220;But we#8217;re putting it on in a coffee shop,#8221; said Ernie. #8220;And you#8217;re not directing it.#8221; #8220;And I see you in slacks and macbeth theme ambition essay a turtleneck.

Lesbian chic. With a shag haircut. Like Cloris Leachman in Phyllis. #8220;The playwright envisions it differently.#8221; The one-night-only one-woman show was performed at a boxy urban coffee joint, conveniently located so Ernie could exert the least amount of effort to get there, just around the corner from his condo in Belltown, several blocks from Seattle#8217;s Two Bells Tavern. Ernie had introduced me to Two Bells a few years earlier. And told me tales of hanging out there while attending Cornish College of the Arts, sitting up at the bar next to intoxicated dreamers, talking about creative projects that would never get made because they were all too damn drunk too much of the time. Because talk is cheap in a Seattle bar where everyone is an 12th floor artist on the verge of a nervous breakout. So that became the benchmark. Whenever Ernie and I heard a big talkerincluding ourselvesgoing on and on about some future project, we would warn each other about the macbeth theme ambition essay Two.

Bells bar stool drunks. Essay Room Floor. And encourage less talk, more action. I learned on the day of the show that the show had been directed on the day of the show, by the playwright, in a car, while driving back from Portland to ambition, Seattle, staging the entire show in 12th floor, three and a half hours without ever having seen the stage. #8220;How can you direct a play in essay solution, a car? I thought they were going to clear them out, then re-open the doors just for the play,#8221; I said passive-aggressively enough so everyone could hear me. Ernie hovered between the #8220;stage#8221; and the restroom, in costume. Macbeth Essay. #8220;We rented the dress,#8221; said Ernie, as I slowly shook my head. They were going for a period look.

But instead of hotel 12th upscale 1912, Ernie looked more like Mrs. Oleson from Little House on the Prairie. Or Norman Bates#8217; mother. Ernie#8217;s cue to begin was My Heart Will Go On, the Titanic movie theme. Seriously. Scale Industries. I can#8217;t remember if they used the floor Celine Dion version, or the instrumental, but it was endless.

It took Ernie about five seconds to walk onstage. Then another four minutes to just stand there and adjust his bustle. The squeal of the milk steamer occasionally broke the monotony. And then it began. The life of Molly Brown, as remembered by her ghost. During the forty-five minute show, Ernie drifted in essays in education, and out of at least three different accents. And remembered his lines almost 50% of the time. #8220;Aah#8230;the Titanic,#8221; said Ernie, his voice somewhere between Julia Child and Tracey Ullman as Princess Margaret. Then, #8220;LINE!#8221;

And then he would be prompted from offstage. But it wasn#8217;t really offstage because everyone could see the playwright standing next to the coffee counter, script in hand, feeding Ernie nearly every other line. And if it had been intentional, it could have been an interesting effect. Essay Hotel Room 12th. Molly Brown in stereo. Small. But as performed, it was light years from Ernie#8217;s down-to-the-syllable perfection in Fever.

And as angry as I was, I felt bad for. the playwright. Because the script wasn#8217;t that bad. But no play can survive this sort of stop-and-go. Essay Hotel Room 12th Floor. So the only dramatic tension was wondering at what point Ernie would simply give up and end the performance. But like Celine Dion#8217;s heart, he just went on and on. And unlike the Titanic, Ernie took less than an hour to small scale industries, sink.

Although I will credit the production with a memorable finish. After Ernie#8217;s last line, he exited out the front door. Hotel Room 12th Floor. And we all saw his profile through tall windows as he walked down the essays sidewalk, head held high, against a backdrop of panhandlers, drug addicts, tourists, and essay room 12th floor a public fountain with a statue of on the role Chief Seattle. Unfortunately, he didn#8217;t return for the cast party. [from a memoir I’m writing about dissertation, doing fringe theater and underground film during Seattle’s grunge era.] I remember coming downstairs and not finding him anywhere. In sloppy cursive it read #8220;Don;t bury me. Spread my ashes over the lake.#8221; I felt numb, shaky, on essays auto pilot as I started running from room to room shouting his name.

I went upstairs and down to the basement. Nothing. Ran outside into the spring cold barefoot looking in bushes, behind the fences, under the porch in the garage. Essay Hotel. That was when I called 911. #8220;He#8217;s gone. I can#8217;t find him.#8221; I heard the outlining voice on the other end telling me to essay hotel, stay calm and asking stupid questions like #8220;Did he leave you?#8221; Are you kidding I thought. Scale Industries. Just then the police cruiser pulled down the paved drive and an office got out. #8220;I can#8217;t find him #8221; I know I was talking but the voice didn#8217;t sound like me at all. #8220;Did you check the house?#8221; he asked. #8220;Yes, Yes.

His car is here. I can#8217;t find him.#8221; #8220;Let me look in essay room, the house ok#8221; he said trying to be sympathetic. #8220;Ok#8221; I said taking him into the house as another sheriff showed up. The first office went through the rooms on the first and second floor. Literary. The second office stood in the kitchen with me. They exchanged glances as the hotel first officer headed to the basement.

He came up a few minutes later. He looked sick. He walked over to me and stood right in front of me. #8220;I am sorry#8221; he said. #8220;He#8217;s down there. He#8217;s gone.#8221; New and quite late to the game here#8230; but I#8217;ve recently decided (admitted) I want to write narrative non-fiction. Literary Theory. After about two-and-a-half years, as wonderful and friendly as Portland is, I#8217;ve also felt astonishingly lonely. Friends of mine who#8217;ve passed through here for a couple of years say the same. I#8217;ve lived in a lot of cities, (including the literary author#8217;s Brooklyn) and several countries and don#8217;t think I#8217;ve ever felt so isolated on a day-to-day basis. It#8217;s interesting to me how this feeling over time, does indeed lead one into the depths of insanity.

I think this is most exemplified by my slight obsession with a fitbit last winter. Abandoning my vow to never be one of those #8220;tools#8221; who openly display some level of obsession with health, I bought one, (I told myself,) in order to track and therefore (somehow) help manage my sleep. After several weeks, I began to enjoy the thing. The knock was a dead giveaway hard, persistent and just a few hours after my dad asked my aunt for money over the tikie box phone. chocolat 1988 essay In a small town where life has been the same for 100 years, a war is about to break out between the tranquility of essay hotel floor, tradition and the fear of change. The shock of the successful, new, the excitement of letting go, the dangers of denying people joy and the temptations of intolerance are aroused by essay hotel floor a chocolaterie's delectable sweets in CHOCOLAT, a comic fable about the magical power of indulging in pleasure. Directed by Lasse Hallstrm, CHOCOLAT is itself a richly layered confection, the tale of phd thesis, several interconnected villagers whose comical confrontations and misbegotten dreams become a moving exploration of tolerance and essay hotel 12th floor, personal liberation. The film features an all-star ensemble cast including Juliette Binoche, Dame Judi Dench, Alfred Molina, Lena Olin, Johnny Depp, Carrie-Anne Moss, Peter Stormare and Victoire Thivisol. At the center of CHOCOLAT is a woman charged with special powers: Vianne Rocher, a mysterious outsider who arrives in the French village of Lansquenet to open a chocolaterie featuring luscious candies that can, in addition to essays tantalizing the tongue, cure lost hopes and awaken unexpected emotions. Vianne's effect is immediate and essay hotel floor, extraordinary: the elderly find themselves recalling young love, troubled couples regain their spark and sniping neighbors become happy friends. Macbeth Essay. But Vianne's sumptuous candies also arouse something else: an escalating battle between passion and moral indignation. As some in the town begin to let go, others clamp down, led by the righteous Comte de Reynaud, who declares Vianne public enemy number one. Just as Vianne is about to raise the white flag, an unexpected romance with a handsome stranger forces her to choose between leaving her hostile surroundings or making a true difference to the townsfolk of Lansquenet.

The battles the essay hotel floor, free-spirited Vianne undertakes in the name of living life without denial first came to the fore in Joanne Harris's acclaimed, mouthwatering novel Chocolat. Critics and readers alike were swept up by essays the novel's dramatic use of chocolate as a metaphor for the liberating powers of pleasure. One of essay hotel room, those drawn to Harris's tale was director Lasse Hallstrm, who most recently undertook the screen adaptation of John Irving's Cider House Rules, The (1999), garnering critical acclaim and multiple Oscar nominations, including two Academy Award wins. Hallstrm saw at the heart of outlining essays, Harris's unusual fable a quality he always looks for in his cinematic stories: a celebration of the funny, eccentric and wonderfully unpredictable ways human beings behave with one another. Hallstrm also found himself enchanted by the story's exploration of life's most delectable moments - and how they arise from the bitter, the dark and the semi-sweet. Ultimately, he saw the fable's moral as a call for tolerance, not just tolerance for indulgent pleasures like chocolate but a deeper appreciation for the wide expanse of room, human foibles and quirks. To me, CHOCOLAT is a very funny fable about temptation and literary theory, the importance of hotel 12th floor, not denying oneself the literary theory essays, good things in essay 12th, life, says Hallstrm. Phd Thesis Industries. It's about the constant conflict in life between tradition and change. And at its very center it is about intolerance and the consequences of not letting other people live out their own lives and beliefs. Hallstrm was particularly intrigued by the story's multi-layered tone, which has the magical essence of floor, a fairy-tale, yet presents a series of characters whose emotions and concerns - from marital mistakes to family dishonesties -- are palpably, often humorously, real. I was interested in the broad range of elements in this story: the dramatic, comedic, at times farcical, the poetic, a comic fable that doesn't simplify its character portraits but is rooted in reality.

Hallstrm continues: I think a noticeable common thread in essays, all my movies is a fascination with depicting human irrationality in essay hotel 12th, all its wondrous, endearing forms. CHOCOLAT offered the opportunity to explore yet another set of character eccentricities. In this story, the characters are full of contradictions and essays, therefore come alive and essay, enter our hearts. The heroine of the story is dissertation, Vianne, a truly free spirit but at the same time a prisoner to her destiny. Essay Hotel 12th. Her nemesis, the Comte de Reynaud, appears in control but is a prisoner to his sense of macbeth theme ambition, tradition. The Comte de Reynaud looks through the town and sees sinners and failures; Vianne sees only human beings with flaws that might be forgiven. Everyone involved with CHOCOLAT saw the involvement of Lasse Hallstrm as a pitch-perfect match.

Produder Kit Golden notes: When David Brown and I first read the essay hotel room 12th, novel, we immediately thought of on the of technology, both Lasse as director and Juliette as Vianne Rocher. To actually get them was a dream come true! It seemed to all of us that this was a great story for Lasse because he always has so much fun bringing rich characters to life, says executive producer Alan C. Essay Hotel 12th. Blomquist. And that's what this story is all about - a wonderful collection of characters who abandon themselves to essays temptation and emerge renewed. Adds producer David Brown: CHOCOLAT has so many wonderful qualities - it has deep, rich characters and an enveloping charm. It's unlike any other story. Room 12th Floor. But most of all, it has the essence of a fable, and yet, it tells the essays, truth.

Just One Taste: The Story Of Chocolat. Writer Robert Nelson Jacobs found himself descending deeper and deeper into a chocoholic haze as he worked on room 12th, the adaptation of CHOCOLAT, for which he conducted intensive research into the history, mystical legacies and myths surrounding chocolate. (Despite his cardiologist brother's warnings, Jacobs felt that he had to sample the wide range of chocolate's exultant effects -- for authenticity's sake, of course.) But the more Jacobs savored the chocolate, the literary, more he was drawn into the story's rich center and its insights into human desires and the destructive impulses of repression and bigotry. Jacobs decided from the beginning that his priority would be to essay 12th floor get the mix of CHOCOLAT's elements exactly right, blending comedy, sensuality and dramatic confrontation with a hint of something mysterious in the recipe as well. Dissertation. I was very drawn to the charm and the magic in the story, to the mixture of wit and wisdom, says Jacobs. I wanted to strike a real balance between the humor, the dramatic surprises and most of all the 12th floor, real emotional honesty of the characters.

He continues: I felt that CHOCOLAT was, at small scale, its heart, the essay hotel room 12th, story of how Vianne gives people faith in themselves and how, in turn, they give that gift back to her. Macbeth Theme Ambition Essay. It's not just the story of essay room, how Vianne changes Lansquenet but how Lansquenet changes Vianne. Jacobs also wanted to essays present each of the townsfolk of Lasquenet as real, flesh-and-blood human beings, each filled with strengths and foibles of their own - the heroes fallible, the villains compassionate. His vision of Lansquenet was of room, a fable-like town populated by very human troubles and triumphs. Jacobs did make one major change from the novel, which places the town's priest at the center of the battle with Vianne. Solution. Jacobs instead turned Reynaud from essay hotel room floor, a priest into a nobleman - and turned the town's priest into a mere pawn in Reynaud's machinations. Outlining Essays. Explains producer Leslie Holleran: In Robert Nelson Jacobs' script, the conflict between Vianne and Reynaud goes beyond church versus chocolate to something more universal. It becomes a conflict between a woman who blows in on the wind and a man who believes in tradition, rigidity, control and piety. Essay Hotel 12th Floor. This was an inspired and surprising bit of writing that really resonates in a global way. It's a testament to Bob Jacobs' inventiveness that he took the ideas of the novel and gave them even more scope.

And of course the humor and humanity of the Comte De Reynaud really appeals to Lasse Hallstrm's style. What's wonderful about the script is essay solution culture shock, that it could translate into any society in the world at any time period, notes David Brown. It is a written as a story that people of all ages can enjoy but it has a real cutting edge to it. Robert Nelson Jacobs also deepened the historical aspects of CHOCOLAT, delving into the myth-laden history of chocolate among Mexico's lost Mayan Indian civilization. Comments Joanne Harris, author of the novel: I loved Robert Nelson Jacobs' script, and I thought he did a very nice job of interpreting the essence of the book in a way that comes alive at the movies. Sensualists And Nay-sayers: The Townsfolk Of Lansquenet. From the essay hotel room 12th floor, beginning, the only person Lasse Hallstrm could envision as the mystical, mysterious single mother Vianne Rocher was Juliette Binoche. Juliette was always the first choice for us and solution, it was an absolute treat to have this chance to work with her, he says. Her character is the center of the story, and Vianne must stand for kindness, tolerance and the free-spiritedness of essay hotel floor, love. Juliette is able to capture this because her approach to her work is to always be emotionally present in the scene.

She respects the camera and knows just how little you need to convey a deep emotion. I think she was really able to expand in this role, which is different from on the in education, anything she's done before. Juliette Binoche was drawn not only to essay 12th floor the character of secret successful, Vianne, but by the power of the unique mother/daughter relationship between Vianne and her imaginative daughter Anouk, who has grown weary of her mother's persistent travels. Vianne is a wanderer, and she expects to always keep moving, observes Binoche. But I don't think she necessarily wants this life. It is pattern inside her and hotel 12th, she can't yet pull herself away from it. She has an enormous struggle inside her that many people face: between the way her life was as a child, and the way she wants to live now. It's something we all struggle with - to break from our parents and our past and outlining essays, live our own lives. She continues: Despite these conflicts, there is something very essential and pure to the relationship between Vianne and Anouk. It comes from the guts, from the inside and is based on love. Binoche was also intrigued by Vianne's more magical side - to which she ascribes a rational explanation.

Vianne's magic actually comes from hotel room floor, believing that people can change and on the role in education, be happy. Her magic is about liberating people and essay, making them believe in literary essays, who they are. That really interested me. Indeed, as Binoche plays Vianne, her powers are just as psychological as they are psychic. But what Vianne doesn't see for a very long time is how the town works its own magic on her.

She spends so much time giving people what they need, that when they give her something back, it comes as a complete surprise, explains Binoche. Vianne sells small dreams and small comforts that add up to transformation in people's live. But without knowing it, they are able to hotel room 12th transform hers just as much. One of the characters Vianne transforms most dramatically is ambition, Josephine, played by Lena Olin. Olin and Binoche previously worked together in Philip Kaufman's acclaimed Unbearable Lightness of Being, The (1988), and their acclaimed chemistry as complex female friends is captured again in CHOCOLAT. 'Unbearable Lightness' was a long time ago and people change, but we still had a real connection, notes Binoche. It was a great pleasure to work together again. Lena Olin also happens to be the room 12th, wife of director Lasse Hallstrm, and CHOCOLAT marks the phd thesis scale industries, first time they have worked together on a major feature film. It was dream-like to work with her, says Hallstrm. I knew it would be easy and comfortable but I never expected it would be such a high. Seeing her at work and hotel 12th, having the give-and-take of small scale, ideas was a real kick and essay hotel room 12th floor, an inspiration to phd thesis small us both.

Hallstrm adds: The role of 12th floor, Josephine is wonderful for Lena because it is ambition, so multi-layered and hotel room 12th, she's great at portraying characters who have a range of theory, qualities. Josephine is eccentric and sensitive but she's also very strong. Lena honors these contradictions and unites them. The mortal enemy of Josephine's awakening becomes the Comte De Reynaud, who rules the hotel 12th, small town of macbeth theme essay, Lansquenet with an abiding sense of room, moral rigidity. But, as Alfred Molina plays Reynaud, there is much more to him than authority and piety. Reynaud probably goes through the most cathartic experience in the whole story, says Molina. He is a very complicated man, foolish and rather pompous and takes himself way too seriously. He sees Vianne as this wild creature who threatens his patriarchy. And yet, Vianne and her chocolate unlocks the possibility for solution culture, change.

Molina particularly saw the humor at the core of hotel floor, Reynaud's humorless lifestyle - and the ways in which his true self comes to the fore. I find him quite comical, especially because he chooses to on the role of technology go to 12th war over chocolate, says the actor. Reynaud can't stand that Vianne is happy and solution, he is deeply suspicious of her. Something in her, the hotel room floor, freedom and the joy she brings to role of technology in education people, really frightens him. Says producer Leslie Holleran of the Comte de Reynaud: It's a great part because it allows the essay room 12th floor, actor to be at once comical and powerful. Reynaud is both the on the role, foil and the person who gets totally unraveled in the end. Alfred Molina worked wonderfully because he truly has the ability to be both frightening and funny at the same time. To watch him work is to see a color wheel of essay hotel floor, possibilities: sometimes dark and heavy, sometimes very comedic, covering the on the role of technology, whole spectrum.

In the town of Lansquenet, the Comte de Reynaud's austerity is balanced out by the eccentricity of essay hotel room floor, Armande, an successful elder town figure. Room Floor. Armande is one of the first of the townsfolk to be taken in by Vianne's charms, and becomes her champion. One of the most acclaimed actresses of essays, today, Dame Judi Dench, gives another many-hued performance as Armande, playing her as a woman with a crusty sense of independence and a grand sense of humor. Says Dench: I think Armande is a bit of a witch who sees in hotel room, Vianne a reflection of herself. Like everybody else in on the role in education, the story, Armande is caught up by Vianne's ability to create change.

What I loved about the film is that it's about the lifting of spirits - not to mention that I got to eat and drink enormous amounts of chocolate! Armande is one of true centers of the story, adds Holleran, and Dame Judi Dench filled us with awe in her portrayal - she was so smooth, so effortless, so dead on emotionally. She can turn anything into a magical moment. Another source of hotel floor, CHOCOLAT's magic comes from the romance Vianne has with the vagabond traveler Roux, played by Johnny Depp in a role he has rarely been seen in -- the film's romantic lead. Dissertation Successful. Depp was drawn both to room 12th floor the film's iconoclastic love story and to a second chance to work with Lasse Hallstrm, with whom he previously collaborated on What's Eating Gilbert Grape? (1993) I would do just about anything Lasse asked of me, admits Depp, but this was such a beautiful story, such a beautifully written script. And it fits so well with Lasse and culture shock, his interest in telling stories that actually try to say something in an entertaining, funny and different way. Depp created Roux as a rough-and-tumble journeyer with a Django Reinhardt-like passion for the steel-guitar blues, which also suited the actor-musician. He's the kind of guy who lands his boat in a village and busks for hotel 12th floor, awhile, then moves on, Depp explains.

I thought Roux would be really into old blues, and this is the first time I've actually played the guitar on film. (Depp notes that he mimed his guitar lines for essays, Cry-Baby (1990). ) Inspiring Depp throughout was Juliette Binoche, of whom he says: She's so beautiful and deep, she makes you fall instantly in love with her. She's an intensely committed actress and if art is possible in cinema, I think she comes as close as anyone can. For Lasse Hallstrm, Depp brought a wonderful presence and a true leading man quality. I'm always impressed by what he does, says the director. His choices are always very tasteful and essay hotel room floor, very accurate and beyond that, he is a wonderful, kind man. Roux's antithesis in Lansquenet can be found in Josephine's brutish husband Serge, whose crude and primitive impulses are brought to the fore in the battle against Vianne. Serge is played by Peter Stormare, best known for his unforgettable role as the cold-blooded killer in Fargo (1996), who had the unusual challenge of playing husband to the director's real-life wife, Lena Olin. Thankfully, as a fellow Swede, Lena and literary essays, I have a history together performing in plays at room 12th, drama school, so it was all quite professional, laughs Stormare. Stormare was intrigued by essay the tragic part Serge plays in the town's reaction to Vianne. I've never played anyone like Serge before, he says.

He's such a sad character. Not really evil, I think, but sad. Once, he had it all, but alcohol killed that. Adds Leslie Holleran: Everyone who's seen 'Fargo (1996)' knows that there can't be a scarier person than when Peter locks in with that stare. 12th. But people haven't seen the other side of essay, Peter: his comic timing. The role could easily have been played in a one-note fashion, but Peter creates a child-like, fanciful character and brings a whole new perspective and essay hotel, layer to his story.

In addition to the complexities of his own character, Stormare was intrigued by successful the big picture of CHOCOLAT. To me, it is a story about what happens whenever an hotel room 12th exotic wind blows into literary theory a town, he explains. It could be anything new, like when television arrived, anything that divides a town into those who condemn the new thing and those who welcome it. In this way, the 12th floor, story, which is so entertaining, is small industries, really a metaphor about hotel room 12th floor, life and society. Equally drawn to that metaphor was Carrie-Anne Moss, who plays Armande's estranged daughter Caroline, who also happens to be the culture, Comte De Reynaud's ally in the war against the chocolate shop. 12th Floor. I just loved the mix of magic and truth in the story, says Moss. She describes her character as a woman who lives a life of extreme control. Dissertation Successful. Caroline wants to control everything - her child, herself, her mother - because it's the easiest way to get through the day. But she ends up coming full circle when Vianne turns her life upside down, continues Moss. She learns to let go for a minute and experience the essay room 12th floor, freedom and lightness of that. Perhaps the most innocent character in CHOCOLAT is Vianne's troubled young daughter Anouk, played by phd thesis industries Victoire Thivisol who made history by winning the Best Actress Award at the Venice Film Festival at essay room floor, the age of four, for her moving role in macbeth essay, Ponette (1996).

Victoire's a very Lasse kind of child in that there's something wise about her, notes Holleran. Lasse's children are always old souls. They are jubilant, nave, unmannered and unpretentious, yet you also know that they are about to change your perspective on the world. The camera loves Victoire, and reveals both a kind of essay hotel 12th floor, wisdom and the giddy playfulness of essays, a child. Thivisol refers to Anouk as a funny, tricky little girl just like me. Essay. She adds: I loved working with Lasse. He's so sweet and nice and he listened to my ideas. Another young actor who makes his feature film debut in CHOCOLAT is literary, Aurelien Parent-Koenig, who plays the role of essay 12th, lonely Luc, Armande's tormented grandson. Says Dame Judi Dench of outlining, Koenig, He brings a wonderful kind of boyish energy. He has a natural curiosity in every part of hotel room, life that is always marvelous in on the, an actor.

He's terrific. Summarizes Leslie Holleran: Lasse's approach to actors is always the same, no matter their age. He speaks to children as adults and shows the same respect for everybody. In a sense, he sees the childishness in grown ups and the grown-up wisdom in children, both of which play a huge role in floor, CHOCOLAT. Like the shock, characters in CHOCOLAT, chocolate itself takes on many different characteristics as the tale deepens: it can be devilish in its allure, compel blissful joy or comfort harrowing sorrows. Throughout, it is a catalyst for essay room, change, and because of on the role in education, that it becomes a danger and a threat to the status quo. To better understand the ways in which chocolate has long been associated with both power and pleasure, Juliette Binoche literally became a student of the room floor, dark, bitter and semi-sweet, heading off to essays in education chocolate cooking school. I have always loved chocolate but in CHOCOLAT, chocolate becomes more than just a sweet taste.

It becomes a gesture towards others or towards yourself, a sort of compassion. It is a wonderful symbol for the exchange of gifts - emotions, honesty, caring - between people, says Binoche. Binoche journeyed to several highly regarded French chocolateries and studied with the chocolate specialist Walter Bienz in hotel room 12th, preparation for playing the chocolate magician Vianne. She also sampled confections from the theme ambition essay, four corners of the earth, and read about chocolate's Mayan origins as the food of the gods. In the beginning I asked Joanne Harris why she had chosen chocolate as Vianne's method and she explained that it has a long history as something that has been shared around the world, says Binoche. This interested me. There is chocolate in Asia, Africa and essay room 12th floor, South America, yet I discovered each tastes a little different, and each seems to bring its own special energy. Consultant Walter Bienz concurs.

I have always believed chocolate has power. It is certainly an solution shock aphrodisiac and hotel room 12th, it can bring emotions to the fore - after all, everyone goes a little mad for chocolate. Essays On The Of Technology In Education. Bienz also taught Juliette Binoche how to physically handle chocolate confections - the shapes, the consistencies, the various types of candy formations. There are at least fifty different types of chocolate and what you create depends on essay hotel room 12th floor, what you use and at what temperature, notes Bienz. There is a real art to theory it. Binoche immediately took to stirring, heating and testing.

I so enjoyed working with the chocolate, she admits. Hotel. There's a fascination in seeing these dark, fluid rivers of chocolate and outlining essays, knowing how to turn them into all kinds of different delights. Walter Bienz gave us all a sense of how sensual the experience of chocolate can be, adds Leslie Holleran. He quite literally swoons for the subject and is philosophical about it. Hotel Room. You come away from talking with him thinking chocolate can change your life. Phd Thesis. You feel like popping this magical candy into your mouth is going to set you free. A Magically Real Town: Forging Lansquenet. CHOCOLAT takes place in a fairy tale village where the patterns of people's lives were established long before they were born and have changed little from year-to-year, until Vianne Rocher arrives and essay 12th floor, shatters the tranquil veneer. Macbeth Theme Ambition. To capture the essay hotel room 12th floor, essence of what Vianne finds in outlining essays, tiny, charmed Lansquenet, the essay floor, filmmakers of CHOCOLAT wanted to create a village that would come off as magically real -- in other words, they wanted a fable-like town that actually exists, a place with outer charm yet viscerally dark corners within.

After searching the nooks and crannies of successful, Europe's backroads, production designer David Gropman happened upon the medieval French town of Flavigny. Room. Near to Dijon in the Burgundy region, Flavigny dates back to the 10th century. Here, Gropman found a picturesque village set atop a hill, with streams flowing down three sides. But that's not all he found. It turns out Flavigny's main industry is the manufacture of Anis de Flavigny candies, which are renowned around France. I liked Flavigny because it wasn't too sugar-coated and prettified, yet it had magic to it, says Gropman.

Wandering through it, I loved the geography the relationship of the buildings. It seemed to perfectly fit the outlining essays, design concept Lasse and hotel 12th, I had discussed: emphasizing a simplicity of secret, story-storytelling and the most honest expression. Another unique aspect of Flavigny was its timelessnes. Explains producer David Brown: When you look out at the countryside here, there are no billboards, no high-rises, no road side businesses. All you see are horses, cows, lambs and real people in an enchanted village.

It's an extraordinary atmosphere in which to tell a story. Given this simple slate upon which to draw, Gropman worked closely with Lasse Hallstrm putting together a notebook of photographs, drawings and illustrations that might capture the very special visual look and feel of the film. They were particularly influenced by the great French photographers Robert Doisneau and Lilly Ronas, who photographed the extraordinary nature of ordinary, everyday French life in the 1950s. There are some great photos of village life in that period. We also had some photos of street festivals in small towns which we were able to completely recreate for the Festival Du Chocolat, says Gropman.

Hallstrm was particularly impressed with David Gropman's ability to bring a sense of the mystical to Vianne's chocolaterie. David really brings to life the feeling of hotel 12th, cocoa's ancient, Mayan legacy and its magical qualities through the design of Vianne's shop and even the look of the chocolates, says the director. Shock. I really have to hand it to him. The coming to life of Lansquenet is his handiwork. You walk onto essay floor, his sets and feel as if a storybook has been brought to life, summarizes Carrie-Anne Moss, who plays the Lansquenet villager Caroline. They were so beautiful they almost seemed like they had been enchanted by a little of Vianne's magic. Filming in dissertation successful, Flavigny stirred up its own small-town controversies, including a group of monks who had fears about the essay hotel, film's theme of seeking pleasure in this world rather than waiting for the promise of a better one. Luckily, the mayor and the local priest were both very incredibly supportive and mustered a lot of good will among the locals, notes Alan C. Blomquist.

The priest even wrote a very funny letter to the monks explaining to them that a film can't be judged just by the script but has to essay solution culture shock do with the casting, the essay hotel floor, editing and the execution. We were lucky to have such a cinephile priest! Later, when the production had temporarily renovated the town square of outlining essays, Flavigny to become Lansquenet, the cast and crew invited the townsfolk to a party, letting them wander through the fictionalized set. It was a wonderful experience to see the community of essay room floor, Flavigny take their evening strolls through town with their cameras - looking at their home town in on the in education, a new way. Several older residents said it recalled the hotel room, feeling of their youth, notes Gropman. It was a very gratifying experience - to see them enjoy so much the changes we made.

Kit Golden adds: We made it snow in outlining essays, Flavigny in May! All of the essay hotel 12th, townspeople came out to watch. Essays. It was truly a magical moment. In addition to Flavigny, scenes were shot in the West Country of England. A number of locations were used, including Bruton for Armande's farmhouse, the essay, manor at Brympton D'Eversy for Reynaud's house and Fonthill Bishop for the river scenes. The remainder of the shoot took place in Shepperton Studios in Twickenham, England, where the town square at Flavigny was rebuilt and most of the interiors were shot - including the chocolate shop, the shop kitchen and Vianne's apartment.

David Gropman literally made a rubber cast of the fronts of Flavigny's buildings and dissertation, carried it back to England in order to forge a perfect reproduction. It was amazing, says producer Kit Golden. Hotel Room 12th. We walked onto small industries, the stage on the first day of shooting at Shepperton and felt we were right back in France. Adds Lasse Hallstrm: Every wrinkle in every stone is an exact replica of the hotel room floor, real town. It's another example of the real and the fable-like mixing in the making of CHOCOLAT. Throughout the shoot, Lasse Hallstrm attempted to blur the line between myth and emotion, fable and funny human truths. To accomplish this visually, he worked closely with cinematographer Roger Pratt, who was recently Oscar-nominated for his evocatively stylized work on End Of The Affair, The (1999). Roger Pratt supported the on the role of technology, poetic tone of the film by creating images that have a sort of dreamy, nostalgic feeling to them without resorting to sepia tones, states Hallstrm. He really has the ability to bring you back and put you in essay hotel floor, another time and place without any sentimentality or cuteness.

The look transports you to a realm where these funny, magical events might be possible and where the characters' humanity can be believed. It seems that long before Vianne Rocher entered the picture, chocolate has been a factor in macbeth essay, the battle between life's pleasures and those who would deny them. The real-life history of chocolate is filled with contradictory rumors and fairytales. There are those who have spoken of chocolate's mystical powers and healing qualities, and yet chocolate has also incited repression, moral judgements and even political banishment. Screenwriter Robert Nelson Jacobs delved into this rich and pungent history in hotel 12th floor, order to give the character of Vianne a legacy steeped in mystery - a legacy that goes all the way back to the Mayan Indians and a tree bearing a fruit known as the food of the gods. Below are some highlights from dissertation successful, this intricate history: Chocolate literally grows on hotel room 12th floor, trees, appearing in its raw state as pods on the 40-60 foot tall trees known botanically as Theobroma cacao, which means food of the gods. This wide-branching tropical evergreen has grown wild in Central America since prehistoric times. It also grows in South America, Africa and part of Asia.

The Mayan Indians of Mexico began using a form of dissertation successful, chocolate as early as 600 a.d., at which point they worshiped the hotel room, cocoa bean as an idol, a literal gift from the heavens. Cocoa beans were thought to essays have fearsome magical powers by the Maya and were carefully used in rituals, religious ceremonies and healings by priests. The Maya used cocoa medicinally as a treatment for essay hotel floor, fever, coughs and even discomfort during pregnancy. The Maya had a God, Ykchaua, who served as the patron of essays on the, cocoa merchants. The Maya were the first to invent a cocoa drink, a hot, mostly bitter beverage made up ground cocoa pods and spices. Later, the Aztec Indians improved upon the recipe, sweetening it with vanilla and honey. They called their drink xocoatl (pronounced similar to Chocolatl), meaning bitter water. In Aztec myth, the god of agriculture, Questzalcoatl, traveled to earth carrying the cocoa tree from Paradise, because it would bring humans wisdom and power. Chocolate became so highly regarded by the Aztecs that it was used as a form of currency along with gold dust. The Florentine Codex, one of the main historical sources describing Aztec life, calls chocolate The drink of nobles, and notes that it must be prepared with the meticulous care due to its powerful nature. Although Columbus returned to Europe with the first cocoa beans, no one knew what to do with them and they were dismissed in essay room 12th, favor of other trade goods.

Europeans got their first real taste of outlining, chocolate when Emperor Moctezuma met the explorer Cortes and his army with a foaming hot-chocolate drink. In 1528 when Cortes returned to essay Spain from the New World, he brought with him the Aztec's chocolate drink making equipment and the trend began to catch on. But due to the drink's powerful reputation, the beans were sequestered away in monasteries and the formula for the drink kept secret, to theory essays be enjoyed only by the wealthiest of nobility. In the early 1600s Italian traveler Antonio Carletti carried the beans tot he rest of Europe and for the first time, chocolate came to the common people. By the room, 1700s, so-called Chocolate Houses were all the rage, as popular as coffee houses. In England, Charles II tried to close them down, calling them hotbeds of sedition. When chocolate first made its way to France, in literary theory essays, the 18th century, it was decried by authorities as a dangerous drug. The idea of mixing chocolate with milk did not come until the 18th century.

Sir Hans Sloane, personal doctor to Queen Anne, invented the secret recipe and later sold it to the Cadbury brothers who made a fortune with new confections. It was a Dutch chemist, Johannes Van Houten, who developed the modern cocoa process, inventing a hydraulic press that would produce a fine cocoa powder. Thus began the era mass-produced chocolate.
