I#8217;m still studying so I don#8217;t know if it has made me more employable. My field of study (English teacher) entails a stay abroad and about mother and daughter, several internships. Graphic Organizer For The Paper? I got to make my AP time count as one internship + my stay abroad, which has shortened my study time (most students struggle with getting their stay aborad into about their regular 3 years). Having been an AP may have influenced my getting a job in graphic paper a big tutoring company. Thesis? College-wise having been abroad longer than the graphic paper, others (and before my bachelors, not late and expository, during) has been a blessing and organizer for the research, a curse.

My good grades in essay about English mostly get attributed to organizer paper, having been in an English speaking country even though I wouldn#8217;t necessarily say that my writing and dupont, comprehension skills have changed that much as I have always been invested in learning English and had huge exposure to English/American literature, TV and paper, movies before I left for of essay, the US. It#8217;s a bit frustrating when you work a lot for something and people go #8220;Well, you have lived abroad, of graphic paper course you get an thesis planning A#8221;. Graphic Organizer? I feel like my accent has improved a bit but also always get paranoid when I haven#8217;t been able to speak in cause of teenage a while. For The Research Paper? I can see how the dupont essay 2014, language skills may be very influencial for graphic organizer research paper, others though. Several of an essay on women my friends have improved A LOT during the time in the US. Paper? The biggest effect that I can see is personal growth though. I#8217;d say I#8217;ve always known who I was and haven#8217;t necessarily changed, but I feel like I have evolved a lot.

Of course the time aborad also created an conclusion age difference to graphic, the newly starting studens but I also feel like having lived in about mother and daughter such a culturally diverse setting has influenced my beliefs, my motivation and graphic organizer research, my overall outlook. I think when you do the federalist essays by, whole AP-thing right you get such a unique look on organizer research paper not just other cultures but also your own. Dupont Challenge? You get to graphic organizer research paper, reflect your POV and maybe see that just because you grew up with certain ideals, beliefs and essay, traditions that doesn#8217;t necessarily mean they#8217;re better or true. Research Paper? You get to essay mother, learn how to for the research paper, be critical and essays spanish civil war, judgemental and embrace cultural differences. Paper? The latter has been incredibly important in of essay my culture since Germany still has a big #8220;us and them#8221; mentality about organizer paper foreigners. Especially the very Anti-American-view that has spread in Western Europe after the NSA thing, but also regarding gun control and cause of teenage, social issues is really interesting. I have studied American history and culture too and found it really interesting how having experienced this different lifestyle has changed my willingness to jump on organizer for the research paper the bandwagon with those opinions. Cause? I now have a mindset that allows me to graphic organizer for the, see things differently but also understand where people are coming from war instead of graphic research paper holding my cultural beliefs above theirs. And Daughter? (And that goes for other cultures as well). Organizer For The Research Paper? I got to appreciate your school system and expository, really feel like -even though I am a pretty lazy person- I am taking advantage of the for the paper, basically free, really good college education because I have seen what people do to get that in the US. I have gained perspectives on mother and daughter parenting that will come in graphic organizer research paper very handy as a teacher.

A childless teacher always is in a bit of a rough position with parents but I feel like I can say I have some perspectives after living with a family very different from essays written by my own. Organizer For The Research Paper? Also, I have absolutely gained perspective on the moral, societal dilemma that is parenting + working. APs and nannies are a bit frowned upon in Germany and a mother is expected to thesis on succession planning, be there for graphic organizer research paper, the children (but also do something self-fulfilling#8230;go figure). Again, I feel like I have always been pretty set in who I am and never had any strange phases per se, but I definitely think the personal growth and cultural openess is something I benefit from thesis on succession every day. Research Paper? The travelling I did what amazing and federalist were, so life-changing but it#8217;s not the organizer, most important part of the experience. I hope this was what you had in leapor an essay on women mind, even though it#8217;s a bit different from the graphic for the research, Asian experience that was talked about in thesis planning the other thread. #8220;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to graphic organizer for the research, your home country?#8221; I have to leapor an essay, admit that I think it mostly didn#8217;t. Graphic For The Paper? After finishing my year in leapor on women the US I started out graphic organizer, studying a MINT subject but dropped it, mostly for on succession planning, health reasons, after three semesters. Graphic Paper? My year in cause and effect the US did help me to organizer research, ace the on women, placement test for organizer research paper, my new major (English) but I never considered going into teaching. Written By? While everybody thought my course specialization would be American literature (especially as that was what my high school teacher had focused on as well) I ended up heading into organizer for the the opposite direction (medieval / early modern English literature). For student jobs nobody ever cared that I had been an conclusion friendship essay au pair except for my old au pair agency who eventually hired me to conduct interviews in graphic organizer paper my area ;) After graduating I went into cause administration because my thesis supervisor and graphic research, former boss knew somebody who needed help.

As that was a fixed-term position I then ended up in were written by retail through a friend. Both jobs I got because I knew somebody not because of for the paper what I had done before. It could possibly be that I got my current job (university administration) partly because I had been in the US they needed someone with a strong grasp of English and essays on the civil, I was the graphic organizer for the research, strongest candidate they interviewed. I had no idea about the job but spoke the essay challenge, language well (I already came to graphic organizer, the US with a very good knowledge of English though plus of about mother course I did study English at university for organizer research paper, another six years#8230; so that might also have been the essay mother, case had I not been an au pair in graphic for the the US). On The Spanish? I do have the graphic organizer for the research, advantage that I can easily switch between German and dupont challenge 2014, English, I have gained a certain set of organizer for the research cultural competences (partly because of the thesis on succession planning, diverse bunch of graphic for the research paper friends I had in spanish civil the US), I am amazingly patient with people, I am more #8220;me#8221; than I was before my time in the US#8230; however, I don#8217;t really know if any of that really helped me find a job. Research Paper? It might have made it easier to keep a job and my life definitely would have been totally different had I not been an essays on the civil war au pair but I don#8217;t think it really ever played a major role in graphic organizer for the research paper finding one. #8220;How did what you learned and essays, experienced as an graphic research Au Pair influence your outlook about essay and daughter what was possible for graphic organizer, you?#8221; I need to of essay, steal from German Au-Pair for that because I think she is organizer right ;) #8220;APs and on the spanish, nannies are a bit frowned upon in Germany and graphic, a mother is expected to be there for challenge 2014, the children (but also do something self-fulfilling…go figure).#8221; while we still don#8217;t have children I have learned that non-parental supervision even for organizer research paper, young children is not the leapor an essay on women, devil. Research? It#8217;s amazing how many (young) mothers over and daughter, here just quit their jobs when they have their first child.

I know that it is research great that this is on women possible for graphic organizer paper, those who really want to be SAHMs but I also feel that this is expository of essay made out to culturally and graphic research, socially be the only acceptable way. About? As I was raised by graphic research paper a single, working mom I knew there was a different way from federalist by a young age but by research living in the US I gained first hand experience in conclusion about essay how normal that was in graphic for the research paper other countries I was always the essay about and daughter, odd one out at research, school and in the US having a mother who was working suddenly was the leapor, norm instead of the exception. Graphic Organizer For The Research? If we are ever blessed with children I know that I want to on succession planning, go back to graphic organizer for the paper, my job #8220;as soon as possible.#8221; I am also aware that asap will likely only be after a year but I want to friendship, go back to graphic organizer paper, a full-time or nearly full-time position and I know I will need it for my sanity. I also know that I do not need to feel badly because someone will provide wonderful care to my child(ren). Federalist Essays Written? As an graphic organizer for the research paper only child, raised by leapor a single mom I also learned a lot about family dynamics, living in graphic organizer for the research paper a patchwork family with four children (toddler to on the war, teenager) and a fifth on the way. Research? It shaped my behaviour in conclusion about essay relationships a lot and graphic research, also my family style. How my host family lived, how they spent their time together, how it was possible to thesis, find a common way for a family of for the paper three adults and thesis on succession, four children (and a dog, and organizer for the research, frequent visitors) all that shaped my personal life so much. And if we ever have children I want them to smoking essay, grow up as loved, as appreciated and research paper, as well cared for as my host kids did. I also learned how to on succession planning, cook. Which my husband appreciates tremendously ^^ Without grandpa#8217;s cooking classes (I still carry the organizer research paper, scars proudly the essay, day I learned not to stick my hand into for the paper hot oil) we#8217;d still be living off frozen pizza.

My husband also enjoys the and effect, traditional family foods (Chicken and research, S#8217;ghetti, Beans and Cornbread, guacamole, salsa, chocolate chip cookies) he gets when I get melancholic and challenge, long for the feeling of graphic organizer #8220;home#8221; that I had in and effect smoking my host family. I have learned to appreciate what we have much more. Things you take for granted when you grow up easy access to public transportation, good quality education, free university education, a public health care system, strict gun laws, long notice periods. Things you tend to complain about organizer for the research because you don#8217;t know how good you have it. Essay? But I also learned to appreciate what other cultures have to organizer for the research paper, offer I am more service oriented, more open, more warm-hearted because of the conclusion friendship essay, service culture that I experienced in the US. Organizer For The Paper? Outwardly, I am much more outgoing than I was before (inwartly, I am still an conclusion friendship introvert but I learned to adapt to organizer for the research, the public much better), I make small talk, I smile more, I embrace life more. I think to federalist were written by, me, personally, it was more of a year of for the research paper personal growth than anything directly influencing my professional career. Spanish War? I don#8217;t think being an graphic organizer for the au pair has improved my job prospects, except insomuch as it looks slightly better on a CV than the cause and effect of teenage smoking, same period of organizer paper unemployment. On the essays civil, other hand, as German Au-Pair has said, it has done a great deal for my self-knowledge. Now, for research, example, I know that I would like to work with children, in expository an advocacy role.

And now I have some experience with children which would be a minimum for that kind of graphic for the research paper role. But my country (along with many) is in a terrible place for conclusion about, employment at for the research paper, the moment, and I do have to say that things still look bleak for essays were, when I finish my extension year. I don#8217;t think having been an au pair will give me much of research paper a leg up. But I#8217;m still glad I did it. Mother? Other than previous posters, it impacted my career tremedously. For The Paper? It build a lot of soft skills that I still benefit from an essay on women today those skills are the graphic organizer for the paper, reason I was able to and effect of teenage smoking essay, become a senior manager. Organizer Research Paper? Having been abroad tremendouly increased my hiring prospectives and job opportunities. An Essay On Women? Even back then, a lot of graphic organizer research paper job postings and about friendship essay, good trainee programs for young graduates required abroad experience (not US specific, any country) and graphic research, skills to thesis on succession planning, work with different cultures. My au pair experience was a huge plus to get through the for the research, first round of and daughter checking applications by for the research HR and dupont essay challenge, opened doors for paper, interviews. It led to great international jobs and further aborad assignments (China, Finland, US, Canada).

Interesstingly, while for conclusion essay, jobs today my au pair experience is organizer paper probably the essay about mother and daughter, least important item on the CV, I still get asked about it in for the research paper almost every interview probably often out of about friendship curiosity of the graphic for the research, interviewer. It is on the spanish civil war safe to graphic for the, say, almost 20 years after my au pair year in expository of essay the US I am way further up the carreer path than I could have ever been without having had the graphic, au pair experience. Most importantly, English language skills is only a reallly supertiny fraction contributing to that. So, when talking to young women and men interessted in becoming an conclusion about essay au pair, I always stress that it doesn`t matter where you decide to for the research paper, au pair, you do not need to chose an English speaking country. The experience will grow you as a person and broaden your horizon that is the thesis on succession planning, most important benefit that will change your life. Organizer Paper? Although fun fact: I got one job which did not really match my field of spanish civil war study and paper, experience purely for spanish, the reason of graphic organizer for the having lived and enjoyed living in were the USA.

The employees in the department frequently ended up with their American counterparts yelling at each other and research paper, not getting problems solved. So, they were looking for dupont essay challenge, someone #8220;who can talk to Americans#8221;. Graphic Research Paper? I thrived on cause the collaboration and organizer for the research paper, still get mails from the former colleagues and the American counterparts today :-) Just some random examples of the skills I have build as an au pair and specifically from living in on the civil war a family environment where your exposure to a new culture is much deeper than just working abroad: * step out of my cultural shoes: not everything my parents and graphic for the, my native culture taught me as right and essays civil war, wrong is graphic for the paper also right and wrong in other parts of the cause and effect smoking essay, world. Living in graphic a family with different values was a (at first almost shocking) eye opener for me. Federalist Essays By? Today I still benefit because it taught me accepting and even appreciating other peoples views, values and organizer for the paper, opinions. I have #8220;lived#8221; it, that something can be #8220;right#8221; in one enviroinment and the opposite is #8220;right#8221; in expository of essay another. * change hurts but you survive the paper, process and essay challenge, come out stronger: moving, new jobs, breakups, new countries#8230; all those changes in research life come with the famous 5 stages of grief, it is not unique to the cultural shock/ adaption process for an au pair.

I learned a great deal from the conclusion about, experience of graphic organizer research moving to a new country and essay challenge, adapt. Graphic Organizer Research? * proactively dealing with challenges and essays on the spanish war, find a solution: so what if you are in charge of 3 children and graphic organizer for the paper, xyz happens you need to 2014, deal with it. Graphic Organizer? And take responsibility and make decisions. Note: there were no mobiles at the time. An Essay? So, I had no way of contacting my host parents directly for simple questions. Graphic Organizer For The Paper? I would have had to expository of essay, call the graphic research, reception of the company first. That is challenge 2014 my daily life at graphic for the research, work and my team sometimes just behaves like a group of kindergarden aged children (in rose colored memories it some days feels even worse). Smoking Essay? And yes, I have told them more than once that my best management skills come from being an graphic research au pair. * ability to fit in: new jobs, new teams, new groups my host family was very different from my native family. Federalist Essays Were By? Anyway, I loved them from the start. Graphic Organizer Paper? Fitting in a different environment and essays, make myself at organizer for the research, home in federalist were a new team is graphic research paper still something I benefit from today. * ability to change and about, do things differently: I did not do everything right as an organizer paper au pair. I have made many mistakes and federalist essays written by, I am sure I needed lots of for the research paper advice and essay 2014, training during the first 6 weeks.

At first I felt bad and research, it was difficult but I soon learned to federalist essays were written, appreciate the opportunity to graphic for the research, learn doing things in a different way. Every time I start in a new job/ team/ countryI need to change some of about friendship my ways to be successful in for the research that setting. Essay Mother? With this point, my last promotion can be directly related to my au pair year. So, for graphic, my career, being an au pair was the game changer. I think that the mileage different people get from of essay their time as an research paper Au Pair varies a great deal depending on the career field they choose to follow. Leapor On Women? It is graphic organizer research paper clearly a little easier to directly relate your experiences to civil, a job working in organizer for the education, child development, child health care etc, than it is an essay on women working in organizer for the research paper other fields. On Women? However, it is graphic organizer for the research paper always possible to of teenage smoking, take the graphic organizer research paper, different soft skills learned and apply them to cause smoking essay, professional life. Organizer For The Paper? It is also going to essays war, vary between au pairs depending on where they were in life before the started the for the, program. I had already graduated from essay 2014 University, worked with disabled children for graphic organizer paper, several years, and essays spanish, lived in graphic paper a couple of challenge countries. Organizer For The Paper? As a result, I think the thesis planning, learning curve was a little shallower for me than for organizer for the paper, other au pairs I knew. The thing that I have found it has helped, is essay mother and daughter as an interesting talking point during interviews.

I am that rather rare breed; the graphic organizer for the research, male au pair. Essay 2014? The result of organizer for the paper that is and effect of teenage smoking essay I have frequently been asked about graphic being an expository au pair at graphic organizer research paper, interviews. If nothing else, this makes you a little more memorable in thesis the minds of graphic for the research paper interviewers, which is frequently half the battle in planning getting a job. Now that I am a bit further into my career, I see it mattering less, and I will probably remove it from for the paper my CV in a few more years. The one other big thing I have noticed is that it has put me significantly ahead of my peers in terms of maturity, ability to take on responsibility etc. Often child care is looked down upon, especially when you decide to do it as a man. However the thesis on succession planning, level of calm, maturity, ability to for the paper, problem solve, and and effect of teenage essay, generally avoid the desire to kill a five year old when they are having a challenging day and driving you up the wall, cannot be underestimated. Graphic For The Research Paper? I find the last one especially helpful when dealing with one or two of cause essay my more challenging colleagues. Organizer For The Research Paper? Overall, I would definitely say that the of teenage smoking, good things I gained from graphic organizer for the paper being an expository of essay au pair significantly outweigh any negatives, including delaying starting my career for organizer for the, a year.

Oh, and it meant I could finally make it to the same country as my then long term and about friendship, very long distance girlfriend (now wife), which was a definite plus. Have a great day. Graphic Organizer Paper? Just out of curiosity: you had an friendship essay American girlfriend, went to the US and took her home with you? Being a male AP, I think, also takes some cojones! I would think you#8217;re not gonna do that if you#8217;re super insecure about who you are. Whereas being a female au pair is now pretty much mainstream. The thing I found in organizer research paper talking to other male au pairs is that most of on women us thought about organizer for the research whether we really wanted to essay challenge, do it for a year, to graphic organizer for the research, a greater extent than many of the women. Essay About And Daughter? Not that all take it lightly, but there is often an attitude of #8220;well I am a girl so I can look after kids#8221;.

I know that is a very broad generalization, but I have found it to graphic paper, hold true, especially with the leapor an essay on women, au pairs who get a big shock with how tough 40 plus hours a week of graphic organizer research child care can be. I actually had an on the American girlfriend before I was an au pair. For The Research Paper? We got. Of Essay? Married and I stayed here. Organizer Research? I am a permanent resident. “How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to your home country?” “How did what you learned and of teenage smoking essay, experienced as an graphic organizer research Au Pair influence your outlook about what was possible for you?” So, for my part, I was an friendship AuPair and a Repeat AuPair.

I would say my life have changed a lot since my experiences in a good or bad way. Graphic For The Research Paper? In a bad way to spanish, my home country, but in graphic organizer for the a good/great way in others countries. Essays Were? Let me explain, my studies was on organizer paper science/math/physics and being an essay Aupair right after this bachelor#8217;s wasn#8217;t such a good idea but I did it though. For The Paper? When I came back after one year, I studied one extra year for a double bachelor#8217;s Degree and this one year was a real challenge I felt like I didn#8217;t fit in so I started travelling a lot all around and tried a job in essays spanish civil France but I went back to US for a second time to organizer, be a repeat aupair. On The Spanish War? After my second time, it was the graphic research, worst, companies didn#8217;t want me because of on succession my time there and organizer paper, #8220;seriously who needs English to do math and physics#8221; ( that#8217;s what I heard many time) So I started small jobs until finding one, the leapor an essay, right one#8230; post mail, aupair in Ireland, Aupair Australia, Waitress in for the research Asia#8230;. I wanted my experience to conclusion about essay, be valuable and graphic organizer for the research, not a waste so I searched and about mother, I found. From my aupair experiences I gained a lot of graphic for the paper patience, flexibility, understanding kids and expository, their developments through different age. I loved teaching them french or math or any others things so I decided to be a teacher none the less an graphic organizer for the english teacher abroad. As my two years in US ( and conclusion essay, other years everywhere around the research, world) makes me an easy person to thesis on succession, adapt in a country and to research, adapt to federalist essays, their ideas, I challenged it. Graphic For The? I passed my TEFL ( teaching english as a foreign language), teaching diploma, and, now, it#8217;s been more than one year living in an essay Hong Kong, being a kindergarten teacher. For The Research? I think it#8217;s up to you to make your experience valuable and worth it back home.

In my mind, girls who go there are the expository, most approachable and easy in paper life and cause smoking, most of us have a job back home related to for the, our experience in on succession planning US. It changed my life a lot, I was going to scientific path and organizer for the, be locked up in and effect smoking labs but now I travel around, have jobs all over graphic organizer for the, the world because of essays on the spanish those experience, I#8217;m more open to graphic for the paper, understand countries, people and an essay on women, their culture. I have a home and graphic for the, a job that I love, I speak English and dupont, french every day so I think I would do it all over again this experience if I were going back in time ;) First, it#8217;s a great conversation starter in for the research paper interviews and and effect of teenage essay, makes me memorable. Graphic For The? And then, everyone who#8217;s interviewed me has remarked that if I can handle full responsibility of dupont essay challenge 2014 kiddos for organizer research paper, 40+ hours a week I can do anything. Leapor? Ha. My au pairing was DIRECTLY responsible for my landing my current job. One of my HKs was autistic and another was most definitely spectrum-y. Organizer For The? Additionally, I dealt with lots of#8230;fun#8230;behaviors and essays civil war, situations that made things#8230;interesting. So now I work in an autism center testing kids for autism and graphic for the research, other neurodevelomental disorders (as well as behavioral/social/emotional things, learning disabilities, cognitive delays, etc) every day. The girl who originally got the job quit after the of essay, first week.

So I waltzed in, underqualified in graphic organizer for the paper terms of federalist were written education, but having experienced three and five year olds punching me in graphic for the research the face, peeing on leapor me when put in for the paper time out, dealing with perseverative behaviors and intense need for expository, routines, epic meltdowns, etc. Research Paper? That#8217;s what landed me the leapor an essay, job. Graphic Organizer For The Paper? And, it was incredibly beneficial for dealing with behavior management, remaining calm and patient when you have boots thrown at your face, or anything along those lines, working with parents, and on and on. Au pairing changed my life and jumpstarted my career, completely unexpectedly. Cause And Effect? #8216;How did your Au Pair year help you find a job when you got back to graphic for the research, your home country?#8217; It didn#8217;t, I currently work in construction and cause and effect of teenage smoking, property development so that bit of childcare experience is graphic research irrelevant as to of essay, what I#8217;m doing for organizer for the research paper, a living. I did the leapor an essay, AP thing solely as a career break and had no intention to graphic organizer for the research, put it in federalist by my resume. How did what you learned and graphic paper, experienced as an Au Pair influence your outlook about dupont essay 2014 what was possible for for the research paper, you? It changed my views on live-in house staff. Even though live in nanny would make our lives so much easier, but being an AP made it clear for me, that at essays, the end of the graphic paper, day I don#8217;t want any sitter to hang out in leapor on women my kitchen when I come from for the research paper work and leapor on women, just want to for the research paper, relax.

Also after my own au pair adventure I realized that even if my child was a bit older and I wanted the multicultural experience for her NO au pair would ever want to match with my family. I#8217;m not sure if it was your intention or not, but your last paragraph makes it sound like you think the AP program is dupont essay challenge a bad idea. Why wouldn#8217;t they want to match with you? Not at graphic paper, all, it is a good idea, unless someone does not understand the intention of the whole program at all. There are several reasons why I think au pairs wouldn#8217;t want to match with my family. We are in Europe so to essays, start with we couldn#8217;t use more than about 30 (maybe 35?) hrs/week. To make use of the program we could probably do with that but it would have been an organizer research paper unsociable split shift. We both work long hours, I work in a major city about 1.5 by train one way, I leave really early 3 days a week, so unless my partner wasn#8217;t in challenge the house that day I would have to have the AP ready to graphic for the research, go before 5am. Conclusion About Essay? I work Monday to research, Friday, but my partner works weird patterns, which sometimes change, so there would be no regular shift plan for the au pair. Very rarely his shift changes unexpectedly (within hours notice), and on about essay those days we#8217;re all in organizer for the research paper trouble :) Weirdly enough it didn#8217;t happen since well over 8 weeks now, but you never know. We live in a rural area with no public transport.

In theory there is dupont essay challenge 2014 a bus with a bus stop, but I guess it#8217;s more like a hail-stop and I have never seen anyone using it. For The Research Paper? The nearest pub is dupont challenge 2014 few miles away, the only shop in the nearest village is organizer paper a grocery shop so no shoes and an essay on women, clothes hunting over the weekend unless they wanted to go to the nearby town, or the graphic research, large city further away. We do have a car that we don#8217;t really use (my car, as I take the trains 90% of the time) but I wouldn#8217;t let the AP drive to essay, the big city on their own#8230;at least for the first few weeks. It would be fine if they wanted to drive around the for the research paper, area( for example to the pub) BUT there are no local APs I know about, so unless my AP was a self proclaimed hermit they would be really bored and lonely. Cause Of Teenage? Also, there is graphic organizer paper no requirement for and daughter, au pairs in Europe to graphic research, take classes, however if they wanted to, living with us would make it logistically difficult most days. The only bonus would be weekends off, but then again with no one to hang out essays were, with that#8217;s a really sad perspective for most people :-). Graphic For The Paper? Having said that, it#8217;s all hypothetical.

My child is small and mother and daughter, I doubt she could communicate about any issues, so leaving her with a stranger is not an option. Our first aupair came to us from China and graphic research paper, stayed with us for two years. Prior to coming to us, she worked in spanish civil a cell phone store. When she first arrived her English skills (both speaking and graphic organizer, understanding) were way less than what we expected (only had one short phone interview). Wow, did she hustle. Leapor? She said her goal was to graphic, become sort of mother English translator when she returned to China. Graphic For The? She attended ESL classes 5 days per leapor an essay week, sometimes twice a day. Organizer Research Paper? She was active in her church and essays spanish war, several other hobby clubs around town. Graphic Organizer For The Research? She was a different person when she left. Since returning to China, she tells me she does have a job translating business papers from federalist essays were written by Chinese to English and research, English to Chinese. I know she recieved at least one promotion.

She sent me pictures of her new apartment and about mother and daughter, Vespa she purchased and sounds happy. For The Research Paper? We are so proud of her and conclusion about, happy for her. I love these stories. My first AP was from research paper France and on women, she also really worked hard to improve her English, and organizer, she left with near native fluency. Civil? It has been over 2 years since she left and she#8217;s still trying to organizer for the research paper, get on a career track, but she has found a lot of interesting rewarding work for federalist written, short stints. Graphic For The Research? I think the expository, English language has helped her, she#8217;s even worked in organizer for the the UK here and 2014, there, but I know that she is graphic research disappointed with the way things have turned out in general. I think that is of essay mostly the organizer paper, fault of the economy and and effect of teenage, the kind of job she wants to graphic for the, get (in childcare) is an essay on women a lot more competitive then it would be if the economy was better. I really think she deserves to have her dreams come true- she#8217;s a hard working, nice, intelligent girl. Graphic For The Research Paper? It might just be a matter of time. Mother? I know she doesn#8217;t give up.

My non European APs have really financially gained from the graphic paper, program (significant change in expository career trajectory) not so much my gap year European APs. It seems like the graphic organizer, APs commenting here tend to thesis planning, all be European. Research? As a European AP i have to federalist were written, say that the AP-Jobs helped me a lot at my construcion side job. Not actually childcare-stuff, but everything related to it: My organisational skills are way better, I feel that I can handle stressful situations better and stay calm in situations where I got angry before. As a team-leader I take more time for my employees, ask them how they are, if everything works out great or if they feel that something should change. Organizer? I also think that I#8217;m more helpful and dupont 2014, more social since I was an Au Pair. But I actually don#8217;t mention that I was an AP in graphic for the research my CV, instead I wrote #8220;language studies#8221; for that time. Living with another family to improve language skills is very traditional in and daughter Switzerland. But I feel like at the construction-jobs they don#8217;t consider beeing an AP as a great thing (they see young woman playing with children and research, only haveing fun all day, and essay 2014, don#8217;t think that it is hard work, although I had to work more hours as an AP than in graphic for the my #8220;normal#8221; job), but they love people who did language studies. Newcastle upon Tyne NE1 4LP. Abstract: The benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome is a complex phenomenon which presents serious difficulties in definition and measurement. Research Paper! It is particularly difficult to cause and effect, set out precise limits on its duration. Many withdrawal symptoms are a result of pharmacodynamic tolerance to benzodiazepines, some mechanisms for which are discussed. Organizer For The! Such tolerance develops unevenly in different brain systems and essay about and daughter, may be slow to graphic, reverse. Withdrawal symptoms occurring in essays on the civil war, the first weeks after cessation of drug use tend to merge with more persistent symptoms that may last for many months.

These prolonged symptoms do not necessarily constitute true pharmacological withdrawal symptoms, but are nevertheless related to long-term benzodiazepine use. Such symptoms can include anxiety, which may partly result from organizer, a learning deficit imposed by the drugs, and a variety of sensory and motor neurological symptoms. The protracted nature of some of expository of essay, these symptoms raises the possibility that benzodiazepines can give rise not only to slowly reversible functional changes in the central nervous system, but may also occasionally cause structural neuronal damage. Keywords: benzodiazepines; withdrawal syndrome; tolerance; protracted symptoms; tinnitus; brain mechanisms. Drug withdrawal syndromes, in general, tend to consist of mirror images of the drugs' initial effects. Thus, abrupt withdrawal from chronic usage of beta adrenoceptor antagonists such as propranolol may give rise to tachycardia and palpitations; abrupt withdrawal from antihypertensive doses of graphic organizer for the, clonidine may be followed by hypertension, anxiety, and other signs of increased sympathetic activity.

Benzodiazepines are no exception: On sudden cessation after chronic use, anticonvulsant effects may be replaced by epileptic seizures, muscle relaxation by increased muscle tension, hypnotic effects by increased anxiety. The same symptoms can occur in attenuated form when the drugs are withdrawn slowly. However, all of these symptoms are not inevitable in any individual patient. The particular features of the withdrawal syndrome and their time of expository, onset, duration, and severity are greatly modified by organizer many other factors. Such factors include pharmacokinetic variables, dosage and duration of drug use, rate of withdrawal, the presence or absence of the original disorder (such as anxiety) for which the drug was prescribed, personality characteristics, physical makeup and susceptibility, and the use of of essay, concomitant treatments. These variables alone make it difficult to characterise specific features of the withdrawal syndrome. This difficulty is compounded by the fact that, as long-term medication, benzodiazepines have mainly been prescribed for anxiety and insomnia, disorders which themselves include most features of the drug withdrawal syndrome. When such patients undergo reduction of benzodiazepine dosage, especially slow reduction, how can one specify which emergent symptoms are true, drug-related withdrawal symptoms, which are pseudowithdrawal symptoms (Tyrer, Owen, Dawling, 1983), which represent a return of the original anxiety state, and which are the natural reactions of an anxious personality undergoing the stress of organizer paper, withdrawal? In circumstances such as these, the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome becomes largely a matter of definition.

Nevertheless, the conclusion about, existence of a benzodiazepine withdrawal reaction, from both high and research paper, low (therapeutic) doses of benzodiazepines, is no longer in dispute, and many attempts have been made to about, define and for the, measure it and to estimate its incidence and duration. Definitions and Measurements. Symptoms occurring during benzodiazepine withdrawal have been described by many authors (Ashton, 1984, 1987; Busto, Sellers, Naranjo, Cappell, Sanchez, Sykora, 1986; Hallström Lader, 1981; Murphy, Owen Tyrer, 1983, 1984; Petursson Lader, 1981a, 1981b; Smith Wesson, 1983; Tyrer et al ., 1983; Tyrer, Rutherford, Higgett, 1981; Winokur, Rickels, Greenblatt, Snyder, Schatz, 1980; among others). Commonly described symptoms are shown in Figure 1. None of spanish, these symptoms are specific to benzodiazepine withdrawal: They include all of the psychological and somatic symptoms of anxiety, although certain symptom clusters are characteristic. Graphic Organizer For The Research! Owen and spanish civil war, Tyrer (1983) and Petursson and Lader (1981a b) emphasised the appearance of for the, new symptoms, not experienced before withdrawal and uncommon in anxiety states. These new symptoms include hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli (sound, light, touch, taste, and smell) and perceptual distortions (e.g., sensation of the floor undulating, feeling of motion, impression of of teenage smoking, walls or floor tilting). There also appears to be a higher incidence than usually seen in anxiety of depersonalisation, derealisation, paraesthesiae, and extreme dysphoria, an amalgam of anxiety, depression, nausea, malaise, and organizer for the research paper, depersonalisation (Petursson Lader, 1981a, 1981b). Conclusion About! Visual hallucinations, distortion of body image, psychotic reactions, formication, muscle fasciculation and twitching (occasionally resembling myoclonus), and graphic organizer for the research, considerable loss of weight are also described during benzodiazepine withdrawal and are unusual in anxiety states. Smith and essays spanish civil, Wesson (1983) and Ashton (1984) drew attention to the characteristic fluctuation of symptoms, which may wax and wane without obvious psychological provocation.

Smith and Wesson (1983) suggest that this wavelike symptomatology is an organizer for the research paper, important marker for distinguishing the dupont essay challenge, low-dose benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome from symptom re-emergence. Graphic Organizer! However, since symptoms may fluctuate in the course of the day or over about mother and daughter, periods of days or weeks, accurate recording is difficult. Since no particular symptom is exclusive to benzodiazepine withdrawal, how can one define the syndrome? Tyrer et al . (1981, 1983) have attempted various methods in placebo controlled studies: The appearance of two or more new symptoms during the withdrawal period. New symptoms in one study included perceptual disturbances, sensory hypersensitivity, and fear of imminent death (1981), and in another study (1983), psychotic symptoms, depression and dysphoria, muscle twitching, and abnormal sensations of movement. The choice of organizer paper, two new symptoms as the minimum number necessary to qualify as withdrawal is clearly arbitrary. An increase in self-rated symptoms (Comprehensive Psychiatric Rating Scale) to about and daughter, greater than 50% of baseline levels, followed by a return to lower values. Symptom resolution is clearly an important feature in differentiating between symptoms due to withdrawal and symptom re-emergence, emergence, or overinterpretation. As Smith and Wesson (1983, p. 88) point out: Withdrawal symptoms subside with continued abstinence, whereas symptoms of other aetiology persist. However, a measure of symptom resolution is graphic for the research not applicable to patients who drop out of withdrawal studies, perhaps because of intolerable true withdrawal symptoms.

It is noteworthy that 45% of patients dropped out of one study (Tyrer et al ., 1981). A combination of methods (1) and spanish war, (2) so that a withdrawal reaction is organizer research paper defined as the appearance of new symptoms that resolved before the end of the study (20 and 14 weeks after the end of withdrawal [Tyrer et al ., 1983]). More recently Tyrer, Murphy, Riley (1989) have produced a questionnaire of symptoms that are relatively specific to benzodiazepine withdrawal in that they mainly occur during periods of drug withdrawal and return towards baseline levels after withdrawal. Pseudowithdrawal symptoms were defined as symptoms occurring when patients thought they were reducing but their drug consumption and blood concentrations of benzodiazepines were unchanged. Such definitions, derived from double-blind, placebo-controlled studies, have been extremely helpful in the recognition of benzodiazepine dependence, especially low-dose dependence. Expository Of Essay! However, they are of necessity arbitrary and organizer research paper, can only about mother and daughter, be approximate, since the appearance or severity of any particular symptom or symptom cluster may actually represent a variable combination of true withdrawal, pseudowithdrawal, and re-emergence of anxiety, and the same patients liable to pseudowithdrawal reactions are also likely to be most vulnerable to graphic organizer paper, true withdrawal effects. Furthermore, definitions based on differences from prewithdrawal symptoms do not take into account the possibility that, due to essays spanish civil, the development of for the research paper, tolerance, withdrawal symptoms may already be present while patients are still taking benzodiazepines. Such a situation is most clearly seen with relatively short-acting benzodiazepines.

For example, patients taking triazolam as a hypnotic commonly develop daytime anxiety (Oswald, 1989) and even hallucinations or psychotic reactions. These are almost certainly withdrawal effects since they are immediately relieved by taking the drug but eventually disappear after the of essay, drug is stopped (Ashton, 1987). Graphic Organizer Paper! Similarly, with lorazepam and alprazolam (Hermann, Brotman, Rosenbaum, 1987) patients often develop increasing anxiety and panic as well as craving between doses (Ashton, 1984). They appear to undergo a miniwithdrawal between each dose, which is temporarily relieved by the next tablet, but disappears after total cessation. An analagous condition is seen with alcohol: alcoholics commonly complain of tremor and insomnia, symptoms which are temporarily relieved by expository alcohol but which only disappear after a period of abstinence. Graphic Organizer For The Paper! Even with long-acting benzodiazepines such as diazepam, there is usually a history in long-term users of steadily increasing anxiety, with the development over the years of new symptoms such as agoraphobia, often with perceptual distortions and essays on the civil war, depersonalisation, despite continued usage of these supposedly anxiolytic drugs. These symptoms have often been temporarily alleviated by a moderate increase in dosage or the addition of another benzodiazepine, but eventually re-emerge during further chronic use and graphic research, only disappear after the spanish civil, benzodiazepine is stopped (Ashton, 1984, 1987).

Mechanisms of tolerance and withdrawal symptoms are discussed below, but tolerance is difficult to demonstrate in clinical practice. Because of these many immeasurable factors, it is doubtful whether the boundaries of a true benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome can ever be clearly demarcated. The overall incidence of the graphic organizer for the, benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome is unknown. As with cigarette smokers (Ashton Stepney, 1982), there may be a large, uncounted population who quit regular benzodiazepine usage after months or years without ever coming to leapor, medical attention. Graphic Research Paper! Tyrer (1990) notes that it is surprising how many patients in ordinary practice have no difficulties whatsoever in reducing their benzodiazepines, and the incidence of spanish civil war, a benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome in general practice appears to be around 30% (Tyrer et al ., 1981, 1983; Tyrer, 1989; Tyrer, Murphy, Riley, in graphic organizer research paper, press; Tyrer, 1990). On the other hand, in selected patients referred for on women, specialist treatment, the incidence may be 100% (Ashton, 1987; Lader Olajide, 1987; Petursson Lader, 1981a). Graphic Organizer Research Paper! It is also worth noting that withdrawal syndromes in the form of rebound insomnia (Kales, Scharf, Kales, 1978) or more general symptoms can occur in experimental subjects and in nonanxious patients prescribed benzodiazepines for sports injuries (Lader, 1988). In addition, a benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome has been described in leapor on women, neonates whose mothers took therapeutic doses of benzodiazepines during pregnancy (Rementeria Bhatt, 1977). Not surprisingly, the observed incidence of benzodiazepine withdrawal reactions depends not only on patient selection but also on the criteria used for measurement.

In the study of Tyrer et al . (1983), when definitions of graphic organizer for the research, withdrawal (1) and (2) (see above) were used singly, the incidence of spanish war, pseudowithdrawal reactions was around 20%. Organizer Paper! With the combined definition (3) (see above) the incidence of true withdrawal symptoms was 44% and there were no pseudowithdrawal reactions. This incidence of cause of teenage, course only applies to those consenting to take part in the study and managing to finish it. Graphic For The Paper! It cannot account for dropouts during withdrawal or for individuals declining to undergo withdrawal (45.5% of essay mother, eligible patients in the study of Tyrer et al ., 1981). For The Research! Thus the essay about and daughter, incidence of benzodiazepine withdrawal, like its diagnosis, becomes largely a matter of definition. The identification of the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome is difficult enough; its duration is even more difficult to delineate. Most estimates suggest a duration of approximately 5-28 days, with a peak in severity around 2 weeks post withdrawal, after which most symptoms return to prewithdrawal levels (Busto et al ., 1986; Murphy et al ., 1984; Owen Tyrer, 1983; Petursson Lader, 1981a, 1981b; Tyrer et al ., 1981, 1983).

To a large extent the apparent duration depends upon graphic organizer how long the patients are followed up, and several authors have drawn attention to the prolonged nature of postwithdrawal symptoms in some cases. For example, Smith and Wesson (1983) observed that symptoms after withdrawal from low-dose benzodiazepine typically take 6-12 months to leapor an essay, subside completely. Prolonged symptoms included anxiety, insomnia, paraesthesiae, altered sensation, muscle spasms, and for the, psychosis. Ashton (1984, 1987) reported a similar protracted time-course. Tyrer (1990) refers to expository of essay, a post-withdrawal syndrome in the 6 months after withdrawal. Hallström and Lader (1981) found the Hamilton Anxiety Score still raised above baseline levels by follow-up several months later when successfully withdrawn patients had resumed their normal life (Hallström Lader, 1981 p. 237). Olajide and Lader (1984) suggested that depression may be an organizer, integral part of the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome and may last several months after withdrawal in susceptible individuals; this phenomenon was also observed by Ashton (1987). Busto, Fornazzari, and Naranjo (1988) described two cases in whom severe tinnitus first appeared during benzodiazepine withdrawal and essays on the spanish, persisted for 6 and graphic organizer research paper, 12 months after discontinuation before finally diminishing or disappearing. In one of these cases the tinnitus was immediately alleviated by diazepam in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial conducted over expository of essay, 1 week, 6 months after withdrawal; after a further 6 months of abstinence the tinnitus had became tolerable. In a recent study of graphic research, 68 patients who were withdrawn from conclusion about friendship, benzodiazepines over a 6-week period and followed for graphic organizer paper, a further 4 weeks, Tyrer et al . (1989), using a self-report scale, found a wide variation in the time at which individual symptoms peaked.

Mean scores for some symptoms (depression, dizziness, paraesthesiae, feeling of unreality) peaked early, while mean scores for others (nausea, memory impairment, faintness, touch sensitivity, and motor impairment) were maximal 8 weeks after the start of withdrawal. Expository! Although individual patient's scores were not reported, and 30% withdrew from the study, these findings suggest that symptoms can persist beyond the 5-28 days usually regarded as the duration of the withdrawal syndrome. Ashton, Rawlins and Tyrer (1990) used the rating scale shown in Figure 1 to record the symptoms of patients undergoing diazepam withdrawal under double-blind placebo controlled conditions. Withdrawal took place over graphic research paper, 4 weeks, and patients were followed for 8 weeks after the end of on the spanish civil, withdrawal. Graphic Research! Half the patients received placebo and the other half withdrawal. Analysis of the challenge 2014, time-course of selected symptoms in the 11 out of research paper, 12 patients in the placebo group who successfully completed withdrawal is essays on the war shown in graphic organizer research paper, Table 1. Eight weeks after the end of withdrawal, mean scores for headache, dizziness, depression, tinnitus, paraesthesiae, and essay about, motor symptoms remained higher than prewithdrawal scores; other symptoms had declined although few had disappeared. These findings again show that duration of symptoms after benzodiazepine withdrawal is often a matter of months rather than weeks. Different symptoms persisted in the Tyrer et al . (1989) and Ashton et al . (1990) studies, which differed also in size of sample, patient selection, and graphic research paper, rate of withdrawal.

To what extent such persistent symptoms are true withdrawal symptoms is of essay unknown. A further problem in organizer paper, assessing the duration of the withdrawal syndrome is the interpretation of the baseline (prewithdrawal) symptoms and anxiety scores. Conclusion About Friendship Essay! Patients presenting for graphic for the, benzodiazepine withdrawal often have high levels of anxiety and many psychological and somatic symptoms. Figures 2 and 3 show Hospital Anxiety Depression (anxiety) (Zigmond Snaith, 1983) and friendship, symptom rating scores for 12 patients on graphic organizer research paper benzodiazepines compared with the scores of 18 healthy university students approaching their exams. Both groups took placebo tablets and were followed for of essay, 20 weeks. Graphic Research Paper! The benzodiazepine group withdrew from the benzodiazepines between weeks 8 and 12. It is clear that the patients had considerably higher scores than the normal subjects on conclusion about essay both scales, even at the beginning of the study while they were still taking benzodiazepines. Certainly in these patients the benzodiazepines were not effectively controlling anxiety and, as argued above, it is possible that at least some of the presenting symptoms were due to withdrawal symptoms even in the presence of the drug, as a result of the development of graphic organizer for the, drug tolerance.

Such symptoms would be expected to disappear after withdrawal, but they could be slow to resolve. There was no evidence of resolution below baseline levels 8 weeks after withdrawal, but unfortunately (as in most studies) formal assessment stopped at this point. However, continued clinical contact with most of these patients has shown that anxiety symptoms have declined over time. This slow improvement bears out the leapor, observations quoted above (Ashton, 1984, 1987; Busto et al ., 1988; Hallström Lader, 1981; Olajide and Lader, 1984; Smith Wesson, 1983) that symptoms improve gradually for many months after withdrawal, and some patients are able to resume normal lives after years of incapacity before withdrawal. Which of organizer research paper, these long-lasting symptoms can one attribute to about friendship essay, true drug withdrawal effects? Is it possible to pinpoint a time at which the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome ends and to graphic organizer research, say with certainty that any residual symptoms must be due to other factors? The problem is expository similar to that of graphic, designating which effects of a bout of influenza or infectious mononucleosis can be attributed to the specific virus. Dupont 2014! Do such effects include only those of the viral toxaemia? Do they include secondary bacterial infection consequent upon the impact of the for the paper, virus? Do they include the period of postviral lethargy and depression which, like benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms, tends to recur in wave-like fashion for several months? Once again, the benzodiazepine withdrawal syndrome appears to slip through the fingers and one is about and daughter led back to a question of definition.

Probably a clear definition of duration is for the impossible because drug-induced perturbations of central neurotransmission merge imperceptibly into the background of individual, genetically determined, and learned patterns of brain activity. Protracted Symptoms After Benzodiazepine Withdrawal. All the problems of definition discussed above are multiplied in leapor on women, any attempt to organizer paper, describe protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal syndromes. Yet anyone observing patients for long periods after withdrawal cannot fail to be struck by the persistence of certain symptoms in of essay, some patients. These may not be true benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms; nevertheless they are possibly related to benzodiazepine use and often present a clinical problem.

Listed below are examples of some protracted symptoms that from personal observations and other reports appear to be relatively common after benzodiazepine withdrawal. Unfortunately, there are no data available on the incidence and duration of such symptoms in comparable patients not treated with benzodiazepines, nor of their relative incidence in patients undergoing benzodiazepine withdrawal. Organizer For The Research! Nor are there any known predictive factors to indicate which patients might be especially vulnerable. Anxiety: As discussed above, anxiety may persist for friendship, many months after benzodiazepine withdrawal, yet slowly decline below prewithdrawal levels after 1-2 years (Ashton, 1987). Graphic Organizer! One reason for the slow resolution may be that benzodiazepines inhibit the learning of stress-coping strategies. Such effects have been demonstrated in animals and man (Gray, 1987). About Friendship Essay! Consequently there is for the research a long period after benzodiazepine withdrawal when patients have a decreased ability to cope with stressful situations (Ashton, 1989; Murphy Tyrer, 1988; Owen Tyrer, 1983).

Recovery may require many months of learning new strategies of stress control to replace the years of coping with stress by means of exogenous drugs. Hence persisting anxiety after benzodiazepine withdrawal does not necessarily imply the re-emergence of an anxiety state existing before benzodiazepine treatment; it may represent the cause and effect smoking essay, uncovering of a type of learning deficiency induced by graphic for the research paper long-term benzodiazepine use. People who take benzodiazepines tend to have high ratings for trait anxiety (Ashton and Golding, 1989; Golding Cornish, 1987; Golding, Harper, Brent-Smith, 1983) which may confer a particular vulnerability to the stress of of teenage essay, withdrawal. Nevertheless, even without formal treatment, protracted anxiety symptoms, including agoraphobia and panic, may gradually resolve after benzodiazepine withdrawal (Ashton, 1987) although the process may be hastened by behavioural treatments. Depression: Depression can be caused or aggravated by chronic benzodiazepine use (Lader Petursson, 1981), yet it also appears to be a feature of the organizer research, withdrawal syndrome (Olajide Lader, 1984). It may be severe enough to qualify as a major depressive disorder (Ashton, 1987) and may persist for some months. Expository! Olajide and Lader (1984) suggest that the organizer for the paper, mechanisms for postwithdrawal depression may be central serotonin depletion, but there is conclusion about friendship essay no direct evidence for this.

Clinically, the depression is not different from depressive illness in general, and it responds to graphic for the research paper, antidepressant drugs. It is essay not clear whether protracted depressive symptoms are more common in patients with a previous history of depression or whether it recurs in graphic organizer research, subsequent years after withdrawal. Tinnitus: Tinnitus is a common symptom of essay about, benzodiazepine withdrawal and may initially result from the characteristic general hypersensitivity to sensory stimuli. It usually resolves in graphic for the research paper, a few weeks, but occasionally qualifies as a protracted symptom. Busto et al . (1988) describe two cases in which tinnitus persisted for 6 and 12 months after withdrawal and mention a third patient who was unable to withdraw from benzodiazepines because of severe tinnitus at each attempt. Leapor On Women! Further cases of protracted tinnitus personally observed are described below. Case 1: Female, aged 54. Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 8 years. Withdrawal slowly from organizer, oxazepam 45mg daily in 1986. Right-sided tinnitus first noticed during previous attempts at withdrawal; became severe after final withdrawal and is still constantly present and severe 2 years later, remaining mainly unilateral.

No abnormality detected on skull x-ray, CAT scan, EEG, or ENT examination, apart from slight bilateral (symmetrical) high-tone deafness. Not clinically anxious or depressed; all other withdrawal symptoms resolved quickly. Taking no medication. Case 2: Female, aged 62. Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 18 years. Withdrawn slowly from diazepam 15mg daily in 1988. Bilateral tinnitus first noticed during previous attempts at withdrawal, becoming severe after final withdrawal, and about mother, still present, severe, and continuous 1 year later.

ENT investigation: moderate bilateral high-tone deafness; wears hearing aid. Graphic For The Research Paper! No clinical anxiety or depression; no other withdrawal symptoms; no medication. Case 3: Female, aged 58. Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 20 years. Withdrew from diazepam 20mg daily over 4 weeks in 1988. Developed acute psychotic reaction, which resolved in one week. First noticed left-sided tinnitus 1 month after withdrawal. Three months later restarted diazepam 20mg daily because of an essay on women, unremitting tinnitus, but experienced only slight improvement. Graphic Paper! Second withdrawal over one year 1988-9. Left-sided tinnitus severe throughout withdrawal and still persisting though becoming intermittent.

ENT examination negative except for slight bilateral (symmetrical) high-tone deafness. Medication: mianserin 30mg daily, started after onset of tinnitus; carbamazepine recently added with no effect on tinnitus. Case 4: Female, aged 70. Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 20 years. Expository Of Essay! First noticed tinnitus, mainly right-sided, on withdrawal from flurazepam 30mg daily in for the research paper, 1985. Tinnitus continuous ever since, not relieved by a course of diazepam. On The Spanish War! ENT examination normal. Organizer Paper! Drugs: no psychotropics; inhalers for asthma. Tinnitus is dupont fairly common in the general population and the apparent relation to benzodiazepine use may be incidental, but these cases raise the organizer paper, suspicion that benzodiazepines may occasionally cause permanent or only slowly reversible brain damage. Such damage may not be detectable on CAT scans; one study (Lader Petursson, 1984) suggested a mild degree of cortical shrinkage in chronic benzodiazepine users, but this finding was not confirmed in a later study (Perera, Powell, Jenner, 1987).

Two of the above patients also complained of unilateral headaches. Paraesthesiae: Paraesthesiae, in essays civil war, the form of tingling, pins and needles or numbness of the extremities or circumoral region, is graphic for the research paper another common symptom of benzodiazepine withdrawal. The symptom also occurs in anxiety and possibly results from hyperventilation. Essays Civil War! Benzodiazepines depress the graphic, sensitivity of the respiratory centre to carbon dioxide (Gilmartin, Corris, Stone, Veale, Gibson, 1988) and essays on the civil war, it is possible that the respiratory centre becomes hypersensitive during withdrawal, triggering hyperventilation. Resolution of paraesthesiae usually occurs within a few weeks of withdrawal.

Occasionally, however, patients complain of numbness or of graphic organizer research paper, a burning sensation affecting the fingers, feet, and legs that may be protracted for months or years. The symptoms suggest a peripheral sensory neuropathy and conclusion about friendship essay, there may be demonstrable sensory impairment to organizer research, light touch. Two patients summarised below typify several similar cases personally observed at a benzodiazepine withdrawal clinic. Case 1: Female, aged 56. Leapor On Women! Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 15 years. Severe continuous burning pain of feet first noticed in 1984 during slow reduction of lorazepam 7.5mg to 1.5mg daily. Organizer For The Paper! Changed to diazepam and slowly withdrawn over leapor, 1 year 1987-8. Organizer For The! Burning feet persisted for a further year, gradually decreasing in intensity and now almost disappeared.

No abnormal signs; good peripheral pulses. Medication; promethazine 50mg nocte since 1988. Case 2: Female, aged 67. Duration of benzodiazepine usage: 12 years. First noticed severe burning pain in about essay, feet and for the research paper, legs in essay, 1981 during reduction of medazepam 15mg to 5mg daily. Graphic Research! Pain persisted during diazepam substitution and slow withdrawal in leapor an essay, 1985. 1986: still severe burning pain in graphic organizer, legs not relieved by chlordiazepoxide. 1989: pain still present. Neurological examination, nerve conduction studies, serum foliate and B 12 levels normal; peripheral pulses present and normal. Formication is also common during benzodiazepine withdrawal, and many patients temporarily complain of a feeling of conclusion friendship essay, insects crawling on organizer for the research the skin or of lice or nits in the hair. Occasionally, more bizarre sensations are reported, such as a feeling of slime or water running over dupont 2014, the body, a sense of inner vibration, or a feeling of trembling inside, and these symptoms may be protracted.

Such symptoms may be variants of the burning sensations described above or may possibly be psychotic, but have a temporal relationship to organizer for the, benzodiazepine withdrawal. Motor Symptoms: Increased muscle tension, hyperreflexia, tremor, fasciculation, and cause and effect of teenage smoking, muscle jerking are common features of for the research paper, benzodiazepine withdrawal but usually resolve within weeks. Occasionally muscle jerking persists for a year or more after withdrawal, and the clinical picture may suggest myoclonus, tics, or exaggerated startle reactions. Shoulder girdle and conclusion, limb muscles are usually affected, but blepharospasm can occur. Some patients complain of graphic organizer paper, violent jerking of the whole body at the onset of sleep, which may occur 20 or more times a night. Restless legs syndrome may also be protracted. Some of these symptoms may result from increased peripheral sympathetic tone since they are often improved by propranolol. Others may be centrally generated and at least partially respond to carbamazepine. Blepharospasm can be controlled by local injection of botulinum toxin at 3 monthly intervals.

Protracted motor symptoms such as these raise the possibility that benzodiazepines are capable of causing long-term hyperexcitability of expository, motoneurons or central motor pathways. Gastrointestinal Symptoms: Gastrointestinal symptoms are extremely common during chronic benzodiazepine use and in withdrawal. Graphic For The Research Paper! Many chronic benzodiazepine users have been investigated by gastroenterologists and found to have irritable bowel syndrome (Ashton, 1987). Gastrointestinal symptoms may be aggravated by hyperventilation (Lum, 1987) and may disappear completely after benzodiazepine withdrawal, even in patients who have had irritable bowel syndrome for years. Nevertheless, there remains a sizeable core of patients who complain of conclusion friendship, food intolerance and gaseous abdominal distension which first appears during withdrawal and is protracted for many months. Tests for specific food allergies almost always prove negative, and the condition is unresponsive to paper, conventional treatment. Expository! Patients often turn to alternative or fringe medicine, undergo various forms of diet, and become convinced that they have intestinal candidiasis or damage to graphic organizer research, the immune system. None of these claims have scientific support, although Lum (1987) reports that hyperventilation provokes histamine release and that the incidence of food intolerance and pseudo-allergic reactions is high in conclusion friendship, chronic hyperventilators. The effect of benzodiazepine withdrawal on gastrointestinal function and on coriocosteroid and immune responses (known to be affected by organizer research paper stress) perhaps merits further attention. Brain Mechanisms of Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Symptoms. The primary effect of benzodiazepines is enhancement of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity on postsynaptic GABA-A receptors in the brain.

The effect results from an interaction with specific benzodiazepine binding sites on the GABA-receptor complex (Möhler Okada, 1977; Squires Braestrup, 1977), which increases the affinity of the receptors for dupont, GABA (Costa, 1981). Paper! GABA neurons consist of small interneurons forming local circuits which exert a powerful influence on essays spanish civil war the excitability of other neurons passing through their spatial domain (Bloom, 1985). Such local GABA circuits are widely distributed throughout the for the research, brain, including the reticular formation, limbic system structures, cerebral and cerebellar cortex (Young Kuhar, 1980). GABA is a universal inhibitor of nervous activity and also inhibits the release of excitatory neurotransmitters (Benton Rick, 1976). Thus the actions of benzodiazepines include not only enhancement of GABA activity at many brain sites but also decreased release of acetylcholine, noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin (Faefely, Pieri, Pole, Schaffer, 1981). The clinical effects of on the spanish civil war, benzodiazepines probably result from a combination of these primary and graphic organizer research, secondary effects at critical sites. For example, the of essay, anxiolytic effects may be due to decreased serotonergic and noradrenergic activity in graphic organizer paper, septo-hippocampal pathways (Gray, 1981).

Thus benzodiazepine actions are by spanish civil no means confined to a particular neurotransmitter or brain pathway. Any chronically used drug gradually engenders a series of homeostatic responses which tend to restore normal function despite the presence of the organizer paper, drug. With chronic benzodiazepine use, compensatory changes occur in GABA receptors. Such changes consist of decreased sensitivity of these receptors to GABA, probably as a result of expository of essay, alterations in affinity state and decreased density (Cowan Nutt, 1982; Nutt, 1986). In addition, there are changes in the secondary systems controlled by GABA, so that the output of organizer research paper, excitatory neurotransmitters tends to be restored, and/or the leapor an essay on women, sensitivity of their receptors increases.

The whole complex of primary and secondary changes eventually results in organizer for the paper, benzodiazepine tolerance. This pharmacodynamic tolerance develops unevenly to different benzodiazepine effects. For example, tolerance appears more rapidly to hypnotic and anticonvulsant than to anxiolytic effects (Sepinwall Cook, 1979). Tolerance to different effects may also vary between individuals, possibly due to variations in intrinsic GABA activity in different parts of the brain, which are in turn reflected in personality characteristics and susceptibility to stress. Conclusion Friendship Essay! Tolerance is never complete and probably never reaches a perfect equilibrium in all brain systems, which may be one reason for the high morbidity amongst chronic benzodiazepine users (Ashton, 1987).

Acute tolerance, especially to hypnotic effects, can be manifested rapidly, but chronic tolerance develops over a time-course of several weeks. Once established, chronic tolerance can last for months or even years after cessation of some central nervous system depressants such as alcohol (Cicero, 1979) and probably also benzodiazepines. The development of pharmacodynamic tolerance sets the scene for the withdrawal syndrome. Cessation of the drug exposes all the adaptations which have accrued to counteract its presence, releasing a rebound of unopposed activity involving many neurotransmitters and their receptors and many brain systems. Clinically this state is manifested as the withdrawal syndrome, consisting of effects that are largely the opposite of those originally induced by the drug. The distribution, duration, and organizer, severity of symptoms depend on the particular systems that have undergone adaptive modulations and the degree of the adaptive changes induced, as well as on the rate of leapor an essay, drug withdrawal.

Some authors distinguish between rebound and withdrawal effects, but the mechanism is the same for both (Lader, 1988) Acute withdrawal effects are reversed by an appropriate dose of the drug, which restores the status quo . As the graphic research paper, homeostatic changes slowly reverse, withdrawal symptoms decline. The process of reversal, like that of tolerance acquisition, does not necessarily proceed evenly in all systems. The variable time of emergence and duration of individual symptoms during benzodiazepine withdrawal noted by Tyrer (1989) and Ashton et al . (1990) (Table 1) may reflect this uneven course. The perturbations of brain function induced by benzodiazepines are exceedingly complex, and dupont, it is for the research paper not surprising that withdrawal symptoms are many and variable. Different symptoms may reflect disturbance of the balance between different neurotransmitter systems as suggested by Ashton (1984) and are likely to show large interindividual differences depending on personal characteristics and susceptibilities. As discussed above, it is difficult to set a definite time limit on the reversal of tolerance and, therefore, the end of the withdrawal syndrome.

In general, tolerance declines over a matter of weeks, but in some cases it may endure for a year or more (Cicero, 1979). Of Essay! Delayed or slow reversal of tolerance may account for graphic for the paper, some protracted withdrawal symptoms. However, some changes induced by benzodiazepines may be permanent or only very slowly reversible. Since benzodiazepines apparently inhibit learning, especially for coping with stress strategies (Gray, 1987), cessation after many years of use may expose a learning deficit, especially in the ability to cope with stress. This may persist as protracted anxiety, and may possibly be related to expository, protracted depression. Anxiety symptoms are likely to endure until new learning has induced the organizer for the paper, appropriate synaptic changes, which probably involve modification of endogenous GABA activity. Finally, there remains the question of whether benzodiazepines can cause structural neurological damage.

Like alcohol, benzodiazepines are lipid soluble, are highly concentrated in the brain, and and effect smoking essay, impair cerebral cortical, cerebellar, and limbic system function. It is possible that use over organizer, many years could cause physical changes such as cortical shrinkage, which may be only partially reversible. Such changes have been demonstrated by CAT-scan studies in young alcoholics (Lee, Möller, Hardt, Haubek, Jenson, 1979; staff, British Medical Journal, 1981) although not conclusively in conclusion friendship essay, chronic benzodiazepine users (Lader Petursson, 1984; Perera, Powell, Jenner, 1987). However, such techniques may not be sensitive enough to detect subtle changes. Nor are standard tests of intellectual function sensitive enough to graphic paper, detect minor degrees of cognitive impairment that may persist after withdrawal in some long-term users. It remains possible that some protracted benzodiazepine withdrawal symptoms (including tinnitus and other neurological and psychological symptoms) could result from physicochemical neuronal damage. These symptoms would not be fully relieved by restarting benzodiazepines. There are still many puzzling features of on women, benzodiazepine withdrawal, and organizer paper, the benzodiazepine story remains unfinished (Ashton, 1984). Ashton, H. (1989). Advice for The New Archivist: Veterans In The Field Explain How To Survive. Recently I have become concerned about organizer for the paper, my economic survival. At age 24, and having finished grad school in the end of December, I took two months off before seriously starting a job search. In this time off I cleared my head from the intense schedule I had gamed in the twoA years before. About? Not only had I taken a full time courseload (something I actually regret now, not due to the difficulty but because it meant less time to get practicum experience) but I also was involved in graphic research paper, a number of internships, and of teenage smoking essay it was time for a break. I also wanted to try to establish a revenue stream by graphic organizer research paper, other means, namely by starting a new business. I applied to a few jobs here and spanish there during that time, but mostly just relaxed and tried to reflect on my vocation to for the paper be. A bit over two months ago I began a focused search and cause of teenage smoking began to apply to dozens of jobs, mostly informed by the immensely invaluableA I Need a Library Job.

The result of the search thus far has been fruitless. Not only did I recently realize that the dozens of federal jobs I had been applying to were being rejected because I was not following an unrequested Federal Resume Format, but I also encountered a complete wall of graphic organizer for the paper, silence from other private and academic listings I applied to. What came to mind after over a month of this perpetual failure was: I am obviously going up against and effect, hundreds of over-qualified applicants per job and I am probably doing something horribly wrong. Organizer Research? Perhaps, just as I had made a major misstep in using the wrong resume format for Federal jobs, I was also failing in some other unknown capacity in my application process to other types of of essay, listings. This quest takes a lot out of graphic for the research paper, you and is extremely stressful. The worst part is writing the conclusion actual cover letters. If you write a good one, it takes at least a half hour, and many listings have redundant, proprietary application forms which take at least as long to fill out. I applied to all sorts of jobs: librarian positions, archivists, technicians, assistants, analysts, researchers, museum techs, museum curators, directors, writers, copy-editors etc etc while keeping in mind I would really prefer to organizer research paper work with special collections or history. Not hearing back from any of these people, I began to essays civil look into teaching English overseas. For those who might be interested, I recommend it: there is an insane abundance of jobs and you will have a job within a week.

It’s still my backup plan if my business or library career doesn’t take off. With my failure in organizer for the paper, mind, my first student loan payments coming due, seeing my savings dwindle, the threat of being kicked out of my house looming overhead – and in a state of on women, desperation/despondency I decided to email the Society of organizer research, American Archivists “Archives” listserv for guidance. What follows is an essay on women, that correspondence. My objective in mailing the listserv was: Be told what I am doing wrong in general Have people look at my resume/cover letters and point out what idiotic things I was probably doing Figure out if my assumption about graphic for the paper, being vastly outnumbered/outgunned is sound so that I can resolve the feelings of disappointment resulting from lack of response. I expected *maybe* 2 or 3 people to essay about mother respond if I was lucky and to get some measured, even pedantic advice. Well that’s not what happened: instead my post went viral, caused a huge amount of graphic for the paper, drama and resulted in at least 1 newbie like me leaving the listserv after being consumed by the sharks.

My first post was: Would any experienced archivists, especially those in hiring positions, give me some serious, no nonsense advice on how to get into the field? I have spent the past two months applying to jobs fruitlessly and I am seriously considering “rage quitting” the profession and just moving on elsewhere – either I am incompetent at applying or I am being outclassed/outnumbered by gigantic and unseen pools. The idea of writing another cover letter is insanely unpalatable. Essay? I know I can do anything – because I have always had the highest GPA/academic accolades and received the largest praise/pseudo-leadership positions in all of my internships. I just.. Paper? don’t know what’s wrong and I am getting really despondent. What do you get out of this? No idea – you’d have to be a real standup citizen of the dupont world to answer this call. If interested – please respond to my personal email. Much thanks. I made a point not to monitor the organizer for the listserv because I figured the most specific information would be communicated personally.

Then the huge influx of emails began. Conclusion About Friendship? Incredibly long, incredible valuable discourses on the history of the archival job community, their own experiences in job searching, their career histories, suggestions on what to do and a few offers to look at my resume/cover letters. I was amazed by the length and graphic for the research complexity of the replies, as well as the breadth of topics. One fellow even called me up and we chatted for nearly a half hour. As time went on I also received a few emails to ignore the hostile and essay and daughter demeaning posts on the list. I was not aware of these posts, as I have my list in digest mode, and as I indicated before, was making an effort to focus on personal correspondence. The valuable emails continued to come, with a few emails scattered about warning me to ignore the list. Out of complete curiosity, I checked it out before going to bed. Apparently while I was exchanging personal correspondence and organizer research receiving a wealth of knowledge another newbie on the list was involved in an epic flame war, being attacked by older professionals, as my own post was being declared self-entitled whining, disrespectful posturing and outrageous. Apparently because I had mentioned 2 months the impression was to some that I was somehow expecting a job on expository of essay, a silver platter, and that I acted like a spoiled brat.

I responded with a magnanimous email, attempting to humbly explain that these assumptions were mistaken (that any information I provided was under duress, in a state of ignorance, in brief and for context) and thanking the list for the invaluable advice I had received. Sealed it with a nice little saying of Gotama Buddha: Do not dwell in the past, do not dream of the future, concentrate the organizer research paper mind on the present moment. The point of and daughter, this blog post is to chronicle the best advice I received from personal correspondence in graphic organizer for the, the list, as requested by a number of students and recent graduates. I believe it will be very helpful for those entering the field. All the following have been made anonymous and civil war identifying information has been removed. Organizer Research? I apologize for the walls of text, but here goes: I sense your frustration and have lived it…and continue to live it. After earning an MLS and 2014 MA history with highest honors, coupled with internships and constant volunteering, I spent over 4 years before getting my first and organizer for the only job offer at cause and effect of teenage smoking, a graduate school. The position I took is professional, but the graphic research paper salary hardly covers my basic living expenses; and essay I graduated with no student debt, no car loan, and no credit card debt. I have been here 5 years, and have had no raise or cost of living adjustments, and the retirement plan was stopped after my first year.

There were layoffs and cut backs, and I now spend all my time in organizer for the, public services and dupont essay 2014 not the graphic for the paper archives. I am thankful to have a job though. Due to my disappointment in my current situation, I have applied to 84 positions and have had 12 interviews in the past 5 years. These are positions which I meet or exceed all basic and preferred requirements. Many jobs I never hear back from, not even a thank you for applying. At those interviews, I have been told that I was selected from 100 aˆ“ 200 applications for one position. I made it through several levels of interviews on several of these positions but never received a job offer. Many institutions have scaled back their work force.

Many never replace retiring workers. With 100 aˆ“ 200 applications for each position, those hiring have their pick from the cream-of-the-crop. Of Teenage? Many institutions can and do hire folk who are overqualified for graphic organizer for the paper, entry-level positions. Essays On The Spanish? Many PhDs are being hired, since they are looking for positions because they are not being hired for tenure track academic positions. Graphic Organizer Research Paper? As academic institutions are hiring more and more adjuncts and cause smoking never replacing their tenure track professors when they retire; some of these folk are turning to for the paper librarianship and of teenage smoking essay archives. They do not, nor will not, share this stuff with you when you considering an organizer for the research paper, MLS. It is on women, learned in the trenches of job search after graduation. Higher education is nothing more than a business which keeps churning out for the research paper more and more graduates for $40,000. They do not care about your prospects after graduation; their job is to fill their classes and take your money. Please do not be fooled by those spouting promises of essay, a better tomorrow; tomorrow is now, and organizer for the the picture is bleak. I have started looking at other career paths, but cannot manage to save money for more education on my meager salary.

Its like a catch-22, and dupont essay not very enjoyable. Good luck with your search! I completely understand your frustration. I have been in the field now for about 5 years. Organizer? After graduating with my MS in library science, it took me about 3 months to find my first job.

After being in that job for about 2 years, I got married and moved to Delaware where it took nine months of searching to find a job in the field, so believe me, I understand how disheartening the lengthy job search can be. The best advice I can give you is on the spanish civil war, that you have to continue to be persistent. I’m also not sure about your situation, but being geographically flexible can really come in handy since narrowing yourself to a specific location can really limit you. If you are unable to organizer for the research move to another location, your best shot is to essays on the war find an institution or two where you would most like to work and graphic organizer research paper begin volunteering. The importance of networking in such a small profession can’t be overlooked. Of Essay? From experience, often opportunities will be posted with internal candidates in mind, so often your best chance is to for the research become one of friendship essay, those inside candidates. There are lots of graphic research, smart, experienced people out there and you’re competing against all of them. It’s tough, and I was in the same boat you are in an essay on women, when I was looking for a job.A It took me about 6 months to get a permanent full time position.A A I won my MA in graphic organizer for the, Public History from the [College] and as part of essays spanish civil war, our curriculum we had to research paper do internships.A I was able to work at the State Archives and did an internship at a small university.A After I graduated I was hired for 2 years as the interim University Archivist.A This gave me a lot of an essay on women, experience and put me in the “middle” of the hiring pool.A A While I was working at the university and when I was actively looking for full time employment I volunteered at graphic organizer for the, a local Historical Society, this too added to my work experience.A I graduated with my MA in essay, [someone in graphic for the research, early 2000] and by Jan ofA [someone in early 2000] I had a full time permanent job. My advice is to graphic for the paper look into on the spanish civil war not just archives, but other jobs that have an archival component. The problem is not enough jobs, lots of new graduates, many in the field with years of graphic for the research, experience and institutional knowledge, and timing. I really didnaˆ™t want to make records management my field of choice, but it ended up that was the job I found. I get to do a lot of leapor an essay, really great things in my job besides the grunt work aˆ“ we have an exhibit case in the courthouse lobby that my student assistant (yes, now itaˆ™s aˆ?myaˆ? student) researches a topic and installs a new exhibit on county history every six months.

We do have a small, but important archive and offer our partners (actually county departments) advice and consultation services on a myriad of issues including data storage and preservation as well as being a full service records center. Just keep the box? Throw it away after scanning it. ) Bah. It annoys me. That is not what archives are about. Graphic For The? We should be – and expository of essay job seekers especially should be – looking at the big issues, advocating for them, trying to peer into the future, finding leadership roles and gaps in leadership in organizer research paper, the field. Cause Smoking Essay? You will make yourself distinct and memorable if you do this, and stay out of the graphic for the weeds. I wanted to give my input to an essay your situation off-list.A Connections are VERY important when youaˆ™re looking for for the paper, an archivist position.A I managed to conclusion about land my current position because, as it turned out, my mentor at the [University] knows my current supervisor through SAA.A A That connection helped A LOT when I applied for the position!A Another instanceaˆ”I applied for a position at graphic for the, another institution and asked a former supervisor for a letter of recommendation.A As it turned out, he was friends with the current archives supervisor at the institution I was applying toaˆ”they had worked together at another college in another state.A (I didnaˆ™t get the job but I made it to the final two, largely on the strength of a personal recommendation.) I would encourage you to on women approach your former professors or anyone in a supervisory capacity youaˆ™ve worked with at for the research paper, an archivesaˆ”let them know you are applying for of essay, a job at research, Archives aˆ?xxxxxaˆ? and ask if they happen to know anything about the institution or anyone who works there.A The archives world is spanish, very small and insularaˆ”I think you will be surprised just who knows who.A But donaˆ™t give up in your search.A I had about 20 applications out there before I landed this job.A And I would encourage you to graphic consider a library positionaˆ”any experience is good, and your chances of essay challenge, moving into an archives position as a current employee at an institution are much better than just applying randomly. Before I graduated with an MLIS I had a job, yet now I feel as if I’m in a similar situation. Organizer For The Paper? I have been applying left, right, and on the spanish civil war center with the hope of moving back to the Midwest. Organizer For The Paper? Yet I only get little nibbles and often times none. I wonder if getting my first professional position was just too easy and that it takes more work than I had ever imagined. Like you I have taken this personally. I have been advised to:

not invest in the positions that I have applied for. I am to essay mother and daughter look for a good match and I did not get an offer because we did not mesh. NOT because I did something entirely wrong, make my cover letter as succint as possible yet sell why we would be a good fit emphasizing special qualities I can bring to the institution, don’t leave anything out of your CV. No one will “be blowing your horn for you”. That really is a quote, and lastly, I have a friend that was appointed to organizer research paper a government position that we would all dream to have. After 15 years on expository, the job (and being frugal) he was able to retire.

I would like to be encouraging, yet real.A It’s hard for anyone to conclusion find a job right now, and graphic for the some fields are even more difficult. Here are some thoughts I have: I have worked as a curator, librarian, archivist, and records manager.A I have degrees in anthropology, museum studies, and information science with a focus on archives.A I have been working in information and cultural heritage management since [the 80s].A I switched to essays on the civil libraries and archives after finding it too hard to find professional work in a museum.

It takes a long time to get a (professional) job.A I think two months is way too soon to give up even though you may be frustrated.A A And sometimes when a person gets his/her first pro graphic paper, job, it is an essay on women, not necessarily the dream job.A For instance, my first professional job (and I am a person with lots of experience even then) was as a children’s librarian and that job offer came 4 months after graduation.A There are many talented, intelligent, experienced people out there searching and organizer for the few jobs.A Part of it is the economy — fewer jobs being posted, fewer people retiring, fewer people moving around.A Part of it is the nature of this work. I have been laid off twice in the past 4 years.A And the challenge jobs that I did get, I got through networking.A Does your school offer any career counseling services?A You might want to check them out.A Networking is a big part of getting jobs.A Volunteer, get a part time paraprofessional job, apply for jobs in for the, related fields, get a mentor, go to professional happy hours, serve on essay about mother, professional committees, and graphic organizer for the use social networking tools to your advance (I got one job through a FB comment saying I was laid off).A Send your resume around and ask for feedback.A (I am happy to look it over.) Asking for people to essay challenge look it over is a chance for you to organizer improve your resume, but also gets someone to look at your resume and know what skills you have.A Go on informational interviews where you contact a professional and ask to come in and talk to them about the field, their job, etc.A Again, you learn something and essays war you get a chance to sell yourself in graphic for the paper, case jobs come up.A Looking for a job is a full-time job that requires lots of different strategies. And before being laid off in friendship, 2008 I had been looking for a better job.A I have been looking for a better job for organizer for the paper, years.A I have applied for over 100 jobs across the country and have had many, many interviews.A I have had several job offers (many of which I turned down) and have worked in some okay positions, but only expository this week was I offered something good and I’m happy to say that I start on Monday.A However, it is not in special collections, but rather public libraries, and that is graphic organizer research paper, disappointing to me.A But I like most things about the situation and essays on the war it has some potential for career advancement and tolerable salaries.A I am grateful to have it.A That’s the economy we are in. Also, these jobs do not pay well.A Some people can make a six figure salary, but most do not.A I think starting around $30K-40K is research, still common.A A friend of mine is a librarian at cause smoking essay, [University in organizer for the paper, the south west] where she has worked since the 1970s and she makes around $60,000.A For some people that is not an issue, but for where I am right now, these mediocre salaries are preventing me from of teenage achieving some of for the research, my life goals and serious hinder my ability to support my family. Personally, I think anthropology is a great degree if you can combine it with a practical graduate degree like information science, public administration, or MBA.A There are many jobs that would use an anthro degree.A Have you looked at the Society for and effect, Applied Anthropology?A Many library and for the research paper archive jobs require or prefer a second masters, but before you take on mother, any more debt, remember how much you are going to be paid. Also, anything involving technology or other kinds of management of information are other good options, such as project management, business (systems) management, digital asset management, and records management.A Those are all valid ways of using an info sci degree, if not as cool and interesting as being an archivist. Some people get lucky.A Keep applying.A Be flexible in graphic organizer for the paper, the job title and location.A And don’t take it personally when you do not get interviews or offers.A You just never know what will happen, so you have to keep trying. Again, I want to be encouraging yet real. A I’m sending this message to the entire list since I think my comments may be useful to others, but feel free to email me directly if you’d like. I hate to say this, but the short of it is essays on the civil war, that two months is not a long time at graphic organizer paper, all for an archives job search in this day in age.A I’ve conducted two country-wide job searches since I received my degree.A My first-job-after-graduation search in [early 2000s] took about essay and daughter, 8 months.A The economy was fine, I had a decent amount of experience in the field (about a year of full time plus 9 months part time at three different repositories), and research I was willing to about mother and daughter relocate pretty much anywhere and it still took a long, long time to organizer research find something.A It was a two-year temporary position in a university archives setting, which later morphed into a tenure-track position.

Fast forward 9 years:A There are a lot more archives programs pumping out a lot more graduates.A The economy still isn’t recovered from the recession.A People are putting off retirement as long as possible.A A Vacant positions are not being filled as a cost-cutting measure.A A Some experienced individuals who were laid off are willing to dupont 2014 take positions for graphic organizer for the paper, which they are extremely overqualified, making the competition for conclusion friendship essay, lower-level jobs even stiffer. This isn’t to say that there aren’t jobs out there.A In fact, it seems like postings have become more frequent of graphic organizer research, late.A A A But, job searching is of teenage smoking essay, a slow, arduous, and self-confidence-sapping process regardless of the field one is in. What I tell the students who’ve worked with me is that if they want to make a career in archives that they need to for the research be willing to relocate.A Further, they are competing against people who have more experience, who went to a better graduate program, and it is essays spanish civil war, up to them to get experience (maybe even get certified by ACA) and build skills to make themselves more marketable. Some more specific advice. – Meredith Lowe’s Archives Gig is (in my opinion) the best place archives-related job listing site. – Check out Arlene Schmuland’s That Elusive Archives Job.

– Take advantage of as many continuing education opportunities as you can. – If you can, volunteer to keep up your skills while you job search. – Get involved in professional associations now while you can get away with paying the student/not-yet-employed rate. – If you aren’t a member of SNAP, SAA’s Student and graphic for the research New Archivists Roundtable, join it.A It’s new, but the membership is enthusiastic and spanish war can commiserate and advise. – SAA has a mentorship program, as do many of the smaller archival associations (I’m currently involved with one organized by graphic organizer for the research, the [a roundtable of archivists in the north east]). – Get certified. I’ll admit that there is not universal agreement on essays civil, this, but I figure that it can’t hurt especially considering the fact that some employers require certification. I’m a new graduate and organizer for the have been (and still am) trying to break into of teenage smoking essay the field too. The main thing I can tell you off the graphic organizer paper bat is that two months of applications is, sadly, not that much. My first job search straight out of and effect of teenage smoking essay, school took five months of applications before I got a one year internship (and I know people who have been searching for much longer). Towards the close of the internship, I sent in dozens (and dozens and dozens) of applications over a seven month period, had second interviews for only two jobs (neither of graphic organizer research, which I got) before the institution where I was interning as a processing archivist decided they had a temporary (6 month) need for me at their off-site storage facility.

Discouraging? Yes. Extremely. When you hypothesize that you’re competing against unseen masses, I think you hit the nail on the head . A recent job I interviewed for essays civil war, had nearly 1000 applicants. It boggles the mind. My advice might not be worth much (as someone who’s still relatively new in research, the field), but the two things that stick in my mind from this experience are to gain as much experience as you can and to be persistent.

As far as experience- all the feedback I’ve had from employers/potential employers is that they’re impressed by my range of experience- I took a number of internships while still working on friendship essay, my MSIS (one at a national library) and spent as much time as I could spare volunteering at graphic research, local libraries/museums/archives. The choice of expository, venues was limited as I was living in graphic for the, a smallish city at the time, but I managed, between internships and volunteering, to build a foundation of widely varied and highly practical experiences. Friendship? As far as persistence goes…I know how incredibly discouraging the job search can be (and how hard it is not to take rejections personally). If you need to, take whatever work you can find, branch out of archives into libraries/knowledge management/prospect research/records management, but don’t “rage quit” your search. Trite as it sounds, Something will work out…eventually. As far as actually searching- you might already know about them, but some of my favorite resources for jobs/job searching have been I Need a Library Job (for which I also volunteer- find the daily digest at graphic organizer, or see just a selection of the essays spanish war jobs it contains on Facebook), (posting mainly archives and related jobs), the “That Elusive Archives Job” blog (which is graphic organizer for the research, really just a series of articles rather than an ongoing blog- but it’s supremely helpful-, and individual school or state job listservs or blogs (most library schools have some type of resource for conclusion friendship, posting jobs). For The Paper? I also love library/archives/km professionals anonymously post the cover letters that got them their current job- It’s a great resource to see what works and cause smoking what doesn’t. Know that you’re not alone! That may be cold comfort, but a little patience and a lot of persistence will go a long way.

Luckily you’ve also got a lot of other more highly qualified responses in response to your email. Good luck with your search! I spent over a year applying before I ever got anything more than a thanks, but no thanks letter. Don’t give up. Just keep being persistent. It’s painstaking writing cover letter and cover letter, tweaking the resume per job, and graphic for the research paper so forth. Especially, when you never usually hear anything; it’s as if you are sending them to a black hole. But, just keep at civil war, it. I finally got a phone interview, which led to a position three months later.

In total, I was looking for over 18 months before I found a job. To begin, Iaˆ™d just like to for the say this Iaˆ™m just offering you one personaˆ™s opinion. Essay 2014? You could ask five different people to read these docs and get very different responses, so here my two cents to take for whatever itaˆ™s worth. (Iaˆ™ll also say that a lot of these decisions come down to opinion and subjective points of view, so keep that in mind when reading my comments as well.) I completely agree with you on graphic organizer research paper, a clear concise resume that gets to essay the point. I have always gone with the rule of a resume not going over 2 pages. As far as the resume goes, one thing that jumps out at me is that your descriptions of jobs are not consistent. For the Credo Reference you just list individual tasks. Then you get down to Yuba College and you use more complete sentence-type fragments. I would strongly urge you to go through and make them all consistent. I have always preferred the Yuba College style where you use good active verbs to describe work experience instead of the simple list under Credo Reference.

It is organizer for the, small style consistency things like this that can keep your resume at the top of the pile when up again 100 other candidates. I also understand adding content this way makes it longer, but I think you have enough of a cushion to expand on some things and still stay within 2 pages. On your letters, the essay file cover.pdf aˆ“ the first thing I notice is graphic organizer for the, that your first sentence isnaˆ™t a sentence. Conclusion Essay? Who recently saw? If a recruiter is research, reading through 100+ letters, starting off with a fragment like that might mean they donaˆ™t even read any further and chuck you into the no pile (not fair, but certainly the way things happen sometimes). Dupont Essay? This, like most of my advice, is graphic for the research paper, just personal preference, but Iaˆ™d avoid using the word nerdy. It gives the letter a less professional vibe to me. War? I would also definitely never write aˆ?Iaˆ™m sick of writing cover letters.aˆ? It shows a poor attitude and will have them wondering why nobody else has wanted to graphic for the research hire you either. I do think your secont paragraph starts out extremely strong with your focus on conclusion about friendship, Web 2.0 technologies etc. and I also like the graphic research paper part in essay and daughter, your last paragraph about not simply doing duties, but going above and organizer beyond. On the file named ChrisKrauseCover.pdf, I would nix talking about mother, how youaˆ™re keeping it brief because of graphic, all the cause and effect essay other letters to sort through.

Itaˆ™s true, but not something that needs to be said as itaˆ™s not strengthening your case any. I would also never say in organizer research paper, a cover letter aˆ?I am not the most experienced.aˆ? I would never ever advocate dishonesty in a cover letter, but you should also be using all your space in the cover letter to sell yourself to the company. About Friendship? Itaˆ™s not a time to talk about your shortcomings. I would also discourage mentioning things like working for a low salary until you earn your chops. In my experience, a discussion of graphic organizer for the paper, salary in a cover letter is spanish war, just too premature. I do think the bullet points in graphic organizer for the research paper, the middle are great. They clearly state the experience and are listed in a way that makes them stand out. You might consider changing your resume to expository of essay mimic this sort of bulleted list as well. The last letter, ChrisKrauseInterest.pdf, once again the graphic organizer for the research starting with Recently spottedaˆ¦ take the time to write out I recently spotted. Other than that, the friendship first and second paragraphs seem really great and graphic for the strongly worded. Iaˆ™d once again shy away from the bluntness of I am a giant nerd.

I understand youaˆ™re trying to make it more personal and dupont essay challenge 2014 staying honest, but cover letters are supposed to be a more formal type of organizer research, writing. Iaˆ™d also remove comments like (no kidding). Hope this was at least somewhat helpful and 2014 I do wish you the best of luck in your search! Persistence pays off! You are right about the debt [I brought up on the list that the main issue is student loan debt and lack of medical insurance] .A I got through a Ph.D. and graphic research paper then did an MLIS with minimal debt.A My wife was also earning a pittance as a university professor in of teenage smoking, [the south] at the time, so we were not starving.A After I finished my Ph.D., however, I worked for graphic organizer research paper, two years in a clerical position in a library, decided I wanted an MLS and had to quit that job in order to go to and effect of teenage smoking essay library school. Good luck and hang in there; professional jobs take time, especially academic jobs.A On a personal note, even if you are angry, don’t mention it in an interview.A I lost a job at Brown University that way; and I don’t really blame the people who interviewed me. I am sorry that everyone is being so negative.A Being unemployed in this economy is hard.A I consider myself lucky that I graduated with an archives degree during the first tech boom when everyone just wanted to get rich quick working for graphic for the research paper, a tech company. I recently attended a MARAC conference in spanish civil war, which there was a session on people having trouble getting hired, entitled “Hire Power”.A Here is one of the presentations, which might be helpful (or at organizer for the research, least let you know that you are not alone).A Best of luck! I was laid off in August 2009 so received unemployment for much of the time that I was out of work. A I don’t know your circumstances so probably don’t have useful advice regarding the challenge of of teenage, day-to-day financial security (taking a part-time gig, moving far away for a job or some other less-than-desirable solution). For The Research Paper? I am very sorry to hear what a rough time you are having and wish you good luck in your job search.

Well, your request certainly went viral on and effect of teenage smoking essay, the AA list!A A few archivists tend to fall into traps of responding “Well, oh yeah, look what happened to me.”A Some tend to lose sight of humanity.A But these are a tiny minority–vocal they may be–of the list members and organizer archivists, in about, general.A Frankly, I was put off by the tone of graphic, part of spanish civil war, your message, but I chalk that up to frustration.A I can still remember my fear of 30 years ago that I wasn’t going to graphic organizer for the be able to find a job after graduate school.A I don’t know whether what follows will be useful, but you asked for some advice. First, it is true that you are in essays civil war, a tough market.A The effects of the graphic organizer for the economic meltdown of essay, 2008-2009 is still being felt in the archival profession–many layoff and few jobs.A Two years ago, I posted a grant-supported job announcement that paid an entry level salary and graphic paper got 115 applications; the person I hired had 28 years of experience, the dupont essay most recent three doing exactly what the new job entailed.A I don’t tell you this to further discourage you (although I’m sure I have), but to paper answer part of your question.A You may not be doing anything wrong in application process, but you are in that “gigantic” pool that you mention. Second, I know it is hard to have patience.A Your generation isn’t known for friendship essay, patience; neither was mine when I was young.A Many of organizer for the research, my colleague forget this.A You probably have debt, you may be worried about health care insurance, and you want to get into your chosen profession.A If you have a passion (I don’t especially like this word) for it, it will eventually happen. Third, and here is expository, my real advice–and I apologize for graphic organizer research paper, taking your time if it is all stuff you know and expository are doing already: 1) You start with a Catch-22.A Newly graduated archivists need to find entry level jobs to get experience and almost all entry level jobs require experience.A And the ways to get pre-appointment experience are not always satisfactory, at least from an for the research paper, income perspective.A Most hiring managers looking at entry level positions will take seriously student employment, internships, and volunteer work.A I always feel badly suggesting volunteer work, but if you get the right situation, it is a great way to learn, hone skills, and get experience.A It seems that this work is essays on the war, often heavily weighted toward working with photographs.A At least in organizer paper, my experience reviewing resumes, that seems to be the case.A Thus, it does raise two issues:A 1) It is important to either broaden your experience as much as possible or 2) figure out cause smoking essay exactly what you want to do (visual materials, digital records, preservation, etc) and get as much experience as possible in graphic organizer for the, that area.A Admittedly, neither of these is easy to do; but a focused volunteer experience can be valuable. 2)A Figure out what your short-term (and perhaps intermediate term) career goals are and an essay on women whether you want to focus your job search strategically to meet those goals.A Do you want to graphic organizer for the paper be a generalist?A Do you want to work with institutional archives?A Do you want to and effect of teenage essay work with manuscripts?A Do you want to concentrate on reference?A Do you just want to get a job?A Of course, sometimes your perspective changes.A I worked two part-time jobs immediately after graduate school; one in municipal archives, the other in organizer for the research, a school district records management program (this is the of essay aˆ?just wanting a jobaˆ? part).A After a year, I got a job as a manuscripts curator dealing with Jewish records (this is the graphic research aˆ?exactly what I wanted to doaˆ? part).A But it did not pay well and it was in [a city in the midwest].A I did not want to work in government archives, but after three years in [a city in the midwest], I took the project position in [a city on the west coast].A And now I canaˆ™t imagine doing anything else. 3)A Having an essay about mother, answer to graphic organizer for the paper number two informs your strategy.A What experience do you need and what skills do you need to develop to find a job?A Most entry level jobs are still processing positions.A Getting more experience in processing textual records would be good for your resume.A Work in or familiarity with MPLP seems to be a aˆ?mustaˆ? these days.A As much knowledge about (and any experience with) digital assets and electronic records will be invaluable. 4)A Someone on the List mentioned contacts.A Networking is mother and daughter, really valuable.A Several years ago, a young recent graduate asked for an informational interview.A She was bright and paper personable, but I had no jobs.A But I did keep up with her to a certain extent and followed her work experience.A When a job came up, she applied and the fact that I had some knowledge of her weighed in my decision to essays on the civil hire her.

5)A Hopefully, your graduate instructors or career counselors told you this one.A Always tailor your cover letter to graphic organizer for the research paper the job, using the same language that is in the job announcement.A I personally do not like cover letters that are more than one page.A To some degree, you can create a template that has basic information and conclusion essay then you fill in the material that needs to organizer be specific to the specific application.A Of course, be sure that you don’t leave any of the of essay old information in graphic organizer for the research paper, a new letter.A I once had someone applying for a job who had the wrong institution in the body of the text. 6)A Make your cover letter and resume look like you are the guy who invented cover letters and resumes.A Non-professional looking application materials donaˆ™t get very far with me or most of my colleagues. 7)A Think outside the box in looking for essays on the spanish civil, work.A I know perfectly fine archivists who first went to work for Corbis or Amazon doing taxonomy work.A Your graduate skills should be able to buy you a lot if you are willing to do something in the short term that you don’t really want to do in graphic paper, the long term. 8)A Be willing to move anywhere.A I am a native Pacific Northwesterner, but I took a job in [a city in the midwest] a year out of graduate school.A Three years later, I got back to dupont essay challenge the NW. Chris, I’ve written more than you probably want to graphic organizer for the research read and conclusion about friendship it may not have been helpful.A Don’t let a few cranky archivists bother you.A We are generally a pretty decent bunch. Thanks for the follow up posting.A I didn’t join the graphic for the research pile-on of essay and daughter, responses, but I do want to add a few comments of my own. You are correct that a lot of people who have been in organizer research paper, the profession for a while are perhaps unaware of the situation faced by a lot of essay, recent graduates.A Things have changed a great deal from even 20 years ago, let alone 30 or 40.A But I think one of the real problems not discussed in polite company is the failure of paper, faculty to expository be honest when advising students.A Encouraging students to get degrees in fields that are not likely to lead to employment which pays a living wage is not fun, but it is the honest thing to organizer do.A Unfortunately, too many faculty try to avoid hurting the student’s feelings or enthusiasm for getting an MA or, Heaven help us, a PhD in a field like history or anthropology.A They are rewarding areas of study.A But I wouldn’t dream of encouraging any student to enter such a program unless they have a brutally realistic appreciation for how bad the job market is in expository of essay, those fields BEFORE they head off to grad school, and how much the degree will cost them. I have had this discussion with students regularly over the past fifteen years.A I have told most of for the, them that I do not encourage anyone to borrow large amounts of money to get an MA or PhD in history, because incurring such a debt is a very poor economic decision.

The archival world is changing fast.A If you don’t do computers and data management, you probably are limiting yourself to expository of essay a few large archives with large legacy paper collections.A Today’s archivist needs to be savvy on working with electronic data.A Lacking that, no matter how good the organizer for the research subject area MA (anthropology, history, American Studies, etc) won’t be much help, unless you are able to leapor on women line up an interview with a museum or library in that area of narrow expertise. Best of luck with your search.A I’m sorry to repeat, be patient, and keep plugging and for the paper looking.A Keep doing the leapor an essay volunteer work and organizer research paper the paid project positions.A So far, it’s the leapor only way anyone gets an entry level job these days. I’ve been following that firestorm you sparked over on graphic organizer for the research, AA today, and as someone who has seen many n00bs get smacked down on the list over leapor an essay the years–try not to take it too personally. The advice you’re getting over organizer for the research paper there is mostly good, but you’re right that many of the archivists don’t really understand how tough it is to break into the field right now. Expository? (I had two solid years of library and archives experience when I started applying for professional jobs, and it still took me 1.5 years to land one.) If you’d be willing to share the private responses you received with the graphic research paper SNAP list, I think our members would appreciate it. From a recent interview we had with an intern… how are you presenting yourself? Are you coming in with the attitude that you are the best freakin’ person they will ever find and they are blasted fools IF they don’t hire you?

Our first choice was rather shy, but we thought she would be happier than our #2 with working alone most of the time. And now I want to apologize for all the ungracious things said today.A I can understand why people can have been offended by some of the about mother words you guys chose to use in graphic organizer for the research paper, your emails, but they didn’t bother me.A You were just asking for information from your peers, communicating the best way you could at the moment.A Nothing wrong with that.A Nothing wrong with being frustrated or curious. I have found that the Archives list is essay, full of petty bickering.A Very odd.A I have never been the recipient of this craziness, but I have witnessed it often enough, which has caused me many times to research paper sign off or at least not pay very much attention to leapor an essay on women the list. If you want to be an archivist, a library/info science degree is not always required, but getting to be that way more of the time.A Rarely is a person required to be a Certified Archivist and it’s even rare that it’s a preference.A But still a good thing to aim for. Museum curator, registrar, and collections manager are jobs you could get with an MA in anthropology if you also get a certificate in museum studies.

To be a librarian, you need a master’s degree in library/info science. If I had it to do again, I would not go into this field.A Sad to say.A I like the for the research work, but the pay and chance for conclusion about essay, advancement and other kinds of support (like being able to organizer for the paper go to professional conferences and having the tools I need to do my job) are so few and far between.A And other kinds of frustrating decisions from administrators…Well, where I am in an essay, my life now makes me regret my choice of career. That being said, it is rewarding in many ways and I do like the work. Again, sorry for research paper, how my colleagues represented themselves and our field today.A Most of essays spanish, us are not all like that. Let me know if I can help you. Hey – may I recommend substitute teaching as something to live on paper, while you look? I did it through the half of library school when I didn’t have a full time job (in another field) and expository then while volunteering to get the right kind of experience (at a historical society where even the director, working full time, was unpaid whenever she couldn’t find a grant to pay herself with – if you’re dead set on working in a field with no money in it, sometimes you get literally no money!)). For The Research Paper? The first in spanish war, [a southern city], in the private and parochial school circuit, and the second in [another southern city], in graphic organizer research paper, the public school system.

It’s massively flexible work – you take only the essays on the war assignments you want and work only the days you want – and, especially at the high school level or in specialized classes (music, science, etc.), can really be nothing more than sitting in a room while they watch a film, do homework, or (my best week long assignment) a student teacher runs music class. Many institutions actually have an “archivist”, often a current or retired teacher or school librarian who is the keeper of the organizer for the institution’s history, and who may be involved in the local professional associations and leapor an essay be able to be an additional reference for organizer for the, you (Archivists of the 2014 [southern city] Area has several members who are school archivists, for example). No, it doesn’t pay exceptionally well, and generally (I believe some larger public school systems may be exceptions) you’re on your own for benefits (I self-insured through Sam’s Club for much less than my eventual job took out of my paycheck in graphic for the paper, premiums each month – unless you plan on high medical bills, it’s really quite feasible — and if you do plan on conclusion friendship, high medical bills, may I strongly encourage you to get a government job!). But it pays better than waiting tables many places, and it’s certainly more pleasant and flexible. It also gives you convenient time to volunteer and graphic organizer for the get your hand in after the school day is done and on weekends, unlike working retail. Remember, volunteering doesn’t have to be something that takes the place of challenge, a paying job – volunteers often have full time jobs and organizer for the research volunteer after work or on conclusion about essay, weekends, either because they love the institution and want to help out for the research or because they want employment in the field but can’t afford to be unemployed during the job search (are supporting children, etc.). I speak as the former volunteer coordinator for essays on the spanish civil war, the [southern city research institution], for graphic for the, what it’s worth!A And we’ve hired several people (2, currently interviewing a third) who volunteered for us, then got paid on contract whenever grants showed up (hint: just about anyone will hire you if you can find your own grant!), and finally got hired full time when positions opened up. Incidentally, there seem to be a lot of traditional archives jobs in the [southern city] area in on the, the past few months… Although that may be just a fluke and once they’re all filled nobody around here will be hiring again… (My facility hired six people at once -out of a staff of eleven! – but then went four years with nobody leaving and for the just recently hired two more to about essay replace departing staff.) Hope my (recent – [mid 2000s] library school grad) employment experience helps. Most of you who started careers in the 80s or 90s didn’t graduate with $50,000+ in debt, and you didn’t have the interest rates we do,

No, I didn’t graduate (M.A. [a university on the west coast] [mid 1980s]) with $50,000 in debt. But I wasn’t debt free either. My student loans (combined grad and undergrad) were around $20,000. Graphic For The? The University of [some state] was a lot cheaper back then. You’re not the first andA you’re not the last to deal with student loan debt. No, we didn’t have the same interest rates you’re dealing with. As [someone] noted, ours were often higher. and statistically you probably didn’t worry about health insurance or a survival on a daily basis because of the former.

Depends on when you graduate, what the economic climate is at that time (the late 70s was a time of friendship essay, very high inflation; the early 80s was, like now, a time of organizer for the research, deep recession), and what kind of about friendship essay, job you land right out of graphic for the paper, school. Dupont Essay Challenge 2014? My first one was a paraprofessional job at [a university on the west coast], and rarely do those pay well. Just try living anywhere on the west side of [a west coast city] on a paraprofessional’s salary. I lived with a roommate, owned no car, and chipped away at graphic organizer, my student loans. Leapor On Women? I did that jobA for 3 years and research it was the best, most foundational experience I could have had. I will grant you that lower level jobs back then were much more likely to have health benefits than lower level jobs do now. What we did worry about, I assure you, is the spanish war same thing you’re worrying about: Am I going to be able to graphic get a job where I can use my degree and my skills (and, yes, keep a roof over my head and pay my bills)?A Some things don’t change. After scrolling through all the various responses to your posting on the listserv (some of them negative), I just want to tell you I understand the job search can be very discouraging. I was lucky enough to an essay get a great job within a few months of research paper, graduating with an dupont essay challenge, MA in History and organizer an MLS, but that was right before the an essay on women economy tanked. Research? I have friends who have been laid off and cause and effect are still looking for jobs, but I also have some friends who were laid off and graphic organizer found jobs.

I think itaˆ™s best to be prepared for leapor an essay, lots of rejection, but keep in mind that somewhere down the line, your resume will get to the top of someoneaˆ™s list. Paper? It is incredibly difficult to apply and apply and hear nothing back, or get rejection notices. Challenge 2014? I received several rejections before getting this job, and I know itaˆ™s a bummer. I also turned down two jobs after being interviewed because I knew they werenaˆ™t right for graphic for the research paper, me, so donaˆ™t feel like you just need to grab anything or you might get into a situation where you hate what youaˆ™re doing. I am one of the essay about mother least patient people I know, but hindsight has taught me that you need to just keep going and graphic organizer research things will work out for you, even if it doesnaˆ™t feel like it right now. One of the of essay best pieces of paper, advice I can offer is when you do get an in-person or phone interview, let your personality shine. Of Essay? I think that weighs as heavily as your resume and graphic organizer research paper experience. Of Essay? After I was hired at the [a museum], my boss told me that my phone interview was better than any of the in-person interviews because of my personality and enthusiasm. I also think that keeping your foot in the door as a volunteer in paper, a library or archival setting (even if itaˆ™s just once a week) will show your commitment to the profession and add to your practical experience. I think the advice you got about volunteering where you want to be was spot on. Also, pay attention to the suggestions that special collections may have a home in organizer for the paper, some non-traditional settings. Museums often have archives, and several of our students have landed in of teenage smoking, corporate archives.

Best of organizer paper, luck. My name is [someone]. I have been following the conversation on the SAA Listserv that you started with the title: Career advice for a new and probably clueless graduate. I have found some of the comments and dupont essay advice helpful and many to be abravise and overly hostile. I graduated from [a university in the north east] in May of 2011 with an MLS and a concentration in graphic organizer for the, Archives and Digital Libraries. I searched for a job throughout graduate school with no luck and after graduating spent two more months searching. At that time I met an aquaintence who knew someone at an archive and sent me the information that they had an opening. Leapor An Essay On Women? Even though HR knew that I was very overqualified for the position they offered me the organizer for the part time job, which consisted of monitoring the reading room and essay making photocopies, and I accepted.

I was hopeful that this would give me the oppurtunity to get a full time job at the archive later on as HR said was a possibilty. Sure enough, thankfully my supervisor saw quality in my work and I was promoted to full time after six months. Organizer Research Paper? Even now, at a much lower wage than I expected and with a job title and description that is leapor an essay on women, not what I wanted I am happy working here. And since my supervisor knows that I am overqualified for the position almost from the research start she was comfortable giving me work that a full time archivist does here (like reference). About Essay? Because we both know that I am more than able to graphic organizer do this work even though the archive doesn’t hire people for the job that includes reference in the job description until they have four years experience and of essay I only have a little over paper a year.

I just wanted to share my story with you and let you know that I think the wait was very worthwhile as I am so happy to work in the archive here and truly enjoy my work. I also wanted to thank you for starting this conversation and cause and effect of teenage essay follow up on your offer to share some of the advice that you received off list. Bottom lineaˆ”keep getting applications out there.A Personally, I wouldnaˆ™t mess with the graphic organizer research CA until you have some more professional experience under your belt.A Also, some employers may actually pay for you to cause and effect of teenage essay get the research certification so it may be prudent to wait until you are in expository of essay, a position that has you on graphic research paper, a career track. My sympathy and dupont empathy to you in your search.A As a recent graduate (2010) who is also carrying a massive amount of debt, I can empathize with your situation.A I am one of the lucky ones who landed a job right out of graphic paper, grad school.A The short version is that my previous employer (a subject based historical society where I continued to volunteer during grad school) had a newly created position for an archival professional and expository I got the job.A (Altho I had been applying for other jobs and landed an interview or two.)A Most of graphic organizer paper, my suggestions for job hunting will likely echo what others have said.A So, I will chime in conclusion about, with a tangential bit of information.A I applied for jobs all over the country and organizer needed a way to mother evaluate the salaries and/or a good way to graphic organizer paper come up with a ‘salary requirement’ portion of an application. There is conclusion essay, a website with information gathered by organizer for the research, the National Low Income Housing Coalition called Out of Reach.A This is a side-by-side comparison of wages and rents in every county, metropolitan area, combined non-metropolitan area, and state in the U.S. An Essay On Women? You probably got more responses than you bargained for on organizer research, there! This will probably be a long email and I hope you find some usefulness in it. I have a BA in history and MLIS from [a university on leapor an essay, the east coast], specialized in archives, preservation and records management. Going into my masters program I had four years of graphic organizer for the research paper, experience – most of the spanish civil war people who were in my class did not have any experience. While at [my unviersity], I also had a 15-hour/week job, so I graduated with 5 years of experience doing a variety of organizer for the paper, tasks at a variety of dupont essay challenge 2014, institutions. I actually went to research school with [someone], who replied to your message, and like he said only a few people in our class graduated with a job. I was one of them. I not only had all of the of essay experience the job was looking for, but I was willing to take the lower salary. I graduated in August 2008 and only applied to three places – two of which I got rejection letters for months later, but the job I truly wanted and the one I got was Archivist at graphic for the research paper, the Historical Society [somewhere in the east coast]. I could commute from on women my parents house in [a north east state], I loved [a north east town] and my brother actually lived there at organizer, the time, I liked historical societies, I was so lucky and it was perfect for my first job.

I applied at the end of June/beginning of July. Dupont Challenge 2014? The search was open until July [] and I got a call that very day for a phone interview. I had the in-person later and by August [] I was hired officially. I graduated August [] and start the job in [a north eastern town] on August []. I was hired making $28,500. I was there for a total of 3 years. About 10 months into being hired, a bunch of graphic organizer paper, changes occurred because of cause essay, financial problems. I had originally been in a department with a project archivist (funded by IMLS) and graphic for the research paper a librarian.

The project archivist position was not picked up and cause smoking the librarian was let go, so I became the organizer research paper archivist and research center coordinator. We had various other changes, so I was basically doing a ton more work including gardening, facilities like cleaning the bathrooms (all the staff had to do this stuff), and we all were furloughed which accounted to a 4% paycut. I started looking for a job when all these changes were beginning because I honestly didn’t know if I would be kept on. Luckily I was, and it was because I could do everything that needed to be done not only running the archives but continuing with the library/research center, and essays on the I was cheap to hire. A lot of things continued to happen which I won’t get in to, but I started to seriously look for a new position around the summer of 2010. I sent out probably 50-100 applications, but honestly I didn’t keep that close of graphic paper, track. I had a hard time because I wasn’t entry-level, I had a ton of experience, but the length of time I had been in cause and effect of teenage essay, the field was less than others going for the same type of positions. I was in a weird limbo-space I guess you could say.

I was trying to stay in the [north eastern state] area, but when I started my “serious” applying in 2010 I broadened by scope to basically the entire eastern seaboard. I applied to a larger variety of places and I also applied to jobs that were perhaps “below” my skill level. However being an archivist and working with archives was my main goal. I had a few interviews during this time. One was for History Associates (that was suggested to for the research you on the listserv) and I was actually offered a job there, but the job was only a bit more than I had been making (I think it was about $33-35K/year) and I would have been commuting which basically would have taken the extra money. The job was also VERY unstable. It was a job to work with other archivists helping this large NPS survey, but basically the funding could have been pulled at essays spanish, any time for for the research paper, any reason. On Women? Another job I was brought in for an in-person interview was something for records management at [a university on the east coast]. I had more experience than the University Records Manager.

Needless to say I was not offered that job. I had another in-person at a different university that didn’t go anywhere. I had some other phone interviews and that was as far as it went. Then I came across the job I now have. I am a Project Archivist at [a major university]. It is a 3-year position and I get to do a bunch of different things with archives. I had to move 5 hours away for this job. I also left a fulltime permanent job for graphic, a fulltime temporary position. It has the possibility of extension, but who knows if that will go through.

This job is definitely “below” what I used to do, but I felt comfortable taking it because for one thing, its [my university] in and daughter, [a north eastern city] and I am making some amazing collections and working on amazing projects. I also am glad to have years of focused work processing collections as my main job. Three years is a solid time – I had been at the Historical Society in for the paper, [my old town] for 3 years and that was a good length of time. While I was lucky at my first position being hired so quickly, this second job search I had been job searching for 2 years, although only 1 year was “serious” searching. Some advice for you specifically? Get more experience. I looked at dupont, your linkedIn, and while you’ve worked at a bunch of graphic, different places, it didn’t seem like that big of a variety. Digital things, EAD, creating websites, etc… are all great, as is cause of teenage essay, helping to guide the collections at organizer for the research, Dubai Women’s College, but have you ever processed a collection? Have you written a finding aid?

Have you cataloged a book? Have you created an exhibit? Have you reshelved books? Maybe that isn’t where you want your career to go, but those tasks are the building blocks of many other positions. If you HAVE done these things, they aren’t apparent on your LinkedIn and maybe they aren’t apparent on friendship, your job applications either. I would be happy to look at your resume or a cover letter example. I am also a mentor in the SAA program. Please let me know if you have questions or want more advice on something I said here.

I appreciate your non-defensive stance in your reply to graphic for the paper the group; it can be difficult to mother do when one feels under attack. Hopefully it will open up some eyes to, as you said, ” assuming that the poster is ignorant, not lazy or self-entitled.” The listserv has been viscious; I deleted most of them without opening them. I was mentoring a young woman looking for a job and I advised her to re-write her resume to for the research answer the job ad.A She had both archival and library experiences and more computer skills than I will ever have.A She needed to tailor her skills to what the job wanted, not just what she had to offer.A That may sound strange, but your resume has to answer point by point what the job ad wants.A That is just to qualify for on the war, the next level. I started out graphic for the paper working part-time and I have held two or three part-time jobs at the same time in and daughter, my decades long career, so I have a clue as to what looking for a job is like and I didn’t like it then and I wouldn’t like it now.A But sometimes you just have to hang on and keep trying. My best leads were by word of mouth.A The regional archives groups may be your best source of leads for word of mouth contacts.A Rarely I got leads from graphic organizer for the volunteer work and once a temporary job was created for me. Good luck.A The economy doesn’t help, I know.

It certainly seems like you’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest, I hope that some of the advice you’re getting off the list is a little more productive than some of the posts I’ve read.A I don’t have too much to offer, but several routes I’ve used in the past.A I started out at a museum, in their archives on an NHPRC funded grant; when that grant wound up, I was able to follow up with an IMLS grant and of essay another NHPRC grant for graphic organizer research, 6 years until I was hired full-time.A I would suggest you find out the award schedule for funding agencies (they all vary) and dupont 2014 start looking for jobs then – many archives will be bringing in new staff for these grants and these can lead to full-time jobs – it did for me (twice).A This year I remember seeing a lot of research, positions around March.A And if you were told about those “hordes of archivists/librarians getting ready to retire…”, they were saying the same thing when I first started in school.A Unfortunately a lot of those jobs get lost due to attrition and more institutions rely on grant funding for staffing – temporary, but still usually 1-2 years duration. In terms of hiring – I don’t know how it is elsewhere, but at conclusion friendship essay, my institution, a university, we have to go through HR for approval every step of the for the paper way – from the job description, approval of initial questions, approval of on-site questions, approval of reference check questions, make-up of the search committee, etc. (are you starting to get the picture?).A While we want to move quickly, it is and daughter, a very long process and unfortunately policy prevents us from reaching out to perspective candidates to organizer research let them know where in the process we are.A We have lost candidates because they find jobs faster than the pace at which we move.A Its frustrating on both ends.A But don’t lose hope!A Bite the bullet and send out those cover letters.A Two months is essay, a very short term to be looking for a job in this economy – it took me 5 months my last go around.A And your resume might still be making the rounds at institutions that move like mine – snail’s pace! In terms of volunteering – I’ve done it and had good and research paper bad experiences.A If you can find a position that will teach you new skills, is at an institution you want to work at, or will offer good networking contacts – go for it!A Also, you may want to consider joining a professional association or two – if you haven’t already.A Most have reduced rates for unemployed members.A Find one that offers mentors – these can be a real boon, from helping make contacts, but even acting as a coach for interviews, etc.A I found the regional associations to be more open to cause smoking essay this, and organizer for the paper surprisingly, I had the most help from the Special Libraries Association in my area.A And regional conferences are usually more affordable than national conferences, and most offer job boards and resume help. I hope this offers a little bit of help, good luck. I just wanted to spanish war let you know that it takes about 3-6 months to find a job, in most fields not just the archival field.A A Also, being willing to relocate increases your chances of finding a job.A I moved from organizer paper [midwestern to western state] for expository, a job.A So, try to keep all of your options open.A Keep at it and you will soon find a position. Hi, Chris. I have stopped responding directly to the A A list for various reasons, although I do read it in digest form, and graphic for the paper just now saw the “conversation” your post triggered. I’ve been thinking about this topic a lot, mostly because I have some very unhappy friends with the same dwindling bank account you mention. I’m not in the same boat as I never took out student loans for my MLS ([mid 2000s]).

Instead, I plugged away at that degree for years while working full-time, and, in various semesters, working multiple jobs, and depleting a savings account I accumulated working a decent job that I just never was able to establish an intellectual commitment to. With the exception of two months after being pink-slipped in [a few years ago], I’ve never been out of essay, work. As mentioned in several posts, networking is important, but one has to go about it the right way. A lot of organizer, newly minted archivists can be kind of aggressive in and effect of teenage smoking essay, their very clear and present desperation. When I’m at a conference or a professional gathering, I want to talk with people as my peer, not as someone who has something to gain from our exchange and I get nothing in return.

So, yeah, network, but also be genuine and share your interests and graphic organizer for the paper your passions. I know. Easier said than done. Also, I hear a lot people giving the old “volunteer” advice. Although I did volunteer before I started my graduate degree, I was able to do so because I had a financial cushion. If you’ve got debt and need to essays on the spanish eat, you shouldn’t be volunteering between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm.

Plus, it totally undermines what paid professionals do. How about graphic organizer research, starting out as a freelance professional researcher, or working for a law office (I know, dull, but it pays the bills)? That’s what I did. My clients referred me and it kept me going until I got my first real archives gig in [mid 2000s]– not even advertised. Of Essay? I sold my skills by explaining that because I was working toward an archives/library degree, I had the “inside track” on graphic organizer, how to find information and historical records quickly and expertly, and I was able to leapor interpret them. The library thing has also paid off pretty well — I am occasionally called upon to provide library-related advice. I recommend looking for opportunities that contribute toward a demonstrable “portfolio” of sorts [I actually have one].

Book reviewing for organizer, a local archives journal, serving on dupont 2014, a professional committee, helping plan a conference, etc. These are productive networking opportunities- — there are also unproductive networking opportunities — and you can do them in addition to working at whatever job you have to hold down to pay your bills. For The Research? As a former committee chair for a local archives group, I would have been so grateful for cause of teenage smoking, the assistance of someone in your position to basically go out and create programming content for me by cold-calling archivists, repositories, etc., and asking about possibilities for for the research paper, collaboration. Also, listen to [someone] about the records management thing. I highly recommend this track, especially if you are a people person and have good interpersonal communications skills. Many of conclusion friendship, my pals are “digital asset managers” but they’re basically digital archivists who are handling the organizer for the research tail-end of the record lifecycle if you buy into that theory.

They don’t. In retrospect, I realize I graduated at a good time, which means pre-2009. While I still cannot wrap my mind around anyone taking out student loans to get an friendship, MLS, I also realize I am trapped in graphic organizer research paper, the mentality of the particular time and cause essay place in which I was raised and spent my young adulthood. This may be at the root of some of the hostility you and [someone] are experiencing. Frankly, when I first saw your post, I thought, “Two months! What is he whining about? And who in their right mind would knowingly accrue that much debt?,” but I understand now that you are earnestly searching for understanding and camaraderie, and we senior archivists met your entreaty with disdain. As a profession, we need to be honest and authentic with each other and the people knocking on the door, asking to be let it in. I wish you the organizer for the paper best of war, luck, Chris, and hope that you can still dream of a future in which you get paid to be an archivist.

Please let me know if you have any questions. With all good wishes, I read with interest yr posting to SAA AA asking for career advice, I wanted to give you my take offline. First of all, you’re younger than most MLS people. A That’s a good thing because if yr tech savvy, you can help any institution trying to manage digital assets, electronic records, info or knowledge management. Two months for a job search is very short. Graphic Organizer For The Research? A I recently spent 17 months searching for on the spanish, my current job after my first FT gig after library school ended I probably sent 120+ resumes cover letters refs had 44(!) interviews (including 4 @ place where I’m currently working). A I finally got four job offers in one week happily ended my job search last October. What I learned is graphic research paper, you need to have experience, expertise empathy, be able to leapor an essay on women articulate the graphic for the research role function of archivists organizational strategies (born-digital or digitization) especially in relation to IT Creative or records managers. You should also join network with other professionals members of SAA or Archivists RoundTable of essay challenge, ny or ARMA or AIIM. A To keep myself involved, I started [a group of organizer, archivists in the north east] as a forum for us to share opinions ideas stories related to r careers. I see you already have a blog, but it might be good to challenge start a new one A related solely to library archives so you can better brand yrself yr name for background checks in advance of yr intvs. But most importantly, keep everything well organized structured. On Satdays Sundays checkA lisjobs.comA A archivists.orgA A indeed.comA for archivist or records managers or librarian or metadata or taxonomist job listings. Make a list A split job listings into academic, media, public, records mgmt, etc.

Create resume templates for each kind, create folders so u’ll remember that you sent it out on date follow up w/ phone calls etc. Then when you hear nothing, repeat the process sooner or later u’ll learn how to graphic organizer research write a short concise cover letter to 2014 get you an interview, that may lead to a second interview, etc. Graphic Organizer For The Research? A It aint easy, but if you keep at it, do it carefully, then the job search process itself (in addition to yr new blog) will make you into a better archivist. I hope this helps, if you have any questions, let me know. A Good luck! If you have not heard this from the expository of essay many responses ( I gave up after reading about 15) let me explain something. I have been around the archival community since 1974 and there is a huge surplus. Salaries are poor and archivists cling to an institution for many years. I suspect that is because of the insecurity in the marketplace.

Leverage that degree in information management. Get a few certifications (CIP, CDIA+, CRM, CIPP) and get into graphic for the paper the information management world. Cause And Effect Of Teenage? It pays far better as essentially you will use the same skills. I was an assistant archivist in the mid-1980s and made the jump. I make six figures and I am in demand. People ask me to graphic paper work for about friendship essay, them but as an archivist I was hungry after graduate school. Think about this because you can have the graphic organizer for the research paper highest GPA, best school etc. About? but it will not matter. Employers are flooded with resumes for graphic organizer, archival positions. Gain a certification and a specialization and you will have no problems.

Move your skills to information management and cause of teenage smoking essay you will have a bright future. Graphic Organizer? Archivists too often languish waiting for someone to die or retire. I just caught up on the AA list serv from last weekaˆ™s discussion (vacation) and expository of essay wanted to give you some advice that helped me. If youaˆ™ve heard it before I understand; and if itaˆ™s not helpful, thataˆ™s okay too. Graphic Organizer Research? Just wanted to leapor an essay on women tell you my experience in the hopes it will help you. I graduated with my MSLIS from [a prominent LIS school] in [last year] and began job searching [early this year].

It was really difficult; I had been a school librarian while I got my masteraˆ™s and thought with 3 years library experience (undergraduate degree in Library Science) and my archival studies degree I would be in graphic organizer for the paper, any archive I chose; no sweat. How wrong I was. Many places want a CA (Certified Archivist) on top of a MLIS; I didnaˆ™t have the year experience to take the exam and dupont wonaˆ™t be able to take it for another year and a half because Iaˆ™m only part time. I did one resume a day since I was lucky to find a full time job in retail while I had no archives work. I found it easier to graphic research do quality cover letters and resumes with only one a day; every evening at of essay, 10 was a convenient time for me to search and write. Do what works for you; even one a day makes a difference. Donaˆ™t get frustrated by no response or an interview and organizer for the research paper then never hearing again; sadly, it happens all the time. I had a phone interview for my current position in essay mother, [sometime last year] and graphic for the a full-day on campus interview in late [later last year]. The hiring process in academia is glacial. I was officially hired at my current place of employment in and effect of teenage smoking, January 2012 and only by default; my position was originally offered to graphic for the paper someone with more experience but he turned it down because it is only 26 hours a week. The other thing that worked in on women, my favor is I had interned for the University Presidentaˆ™s wife a few years ago in my undergrad and graphic organizer used her as a reference.

Youaˆ™ve heard it before but networking is huge these days; I truly believe having her a reference had immense pull in and effect essay, my getting to graphic for the be second choice. I had little to no archives experience; I wouldnaˆ™t consider the one month for 20 hours a week experience I had a ton of hands on experience. I also networked with local organizations to even find job listings; MARAC in the north east, SAA and ALA in the US, and about mother and daughter ACLCP for small colleges and universities in for the, PA where I live and work. All the fees to be members were pretty small (I believe around $150 a year for all four since I could say I wasnaˆ™t employed in the field) and cause smoking they were exactly what I was looking for graphic research, in employment. Leapor On Women? Find the local organizations in your area and join them. I also am a member of [two local organizations in the North East]; both looked great on the resume because of community ties and again, great for networking. I donaˆ™t know if you can but volunteer; I did at graphic, a local library shelving and whatnot once a week and had it on my resume and essay everywhere I interviewed loved it because it showed community involvement.

I donaˆ™t know if any of this will help you but donaˆ™t give up yet. Iaˆ™m not. I hope this position becomes full time and if not, Iaˆ™m in the process of getting my MBA here since its discounted and will be another feather in my cap when I start seriously searching again. Please feel free to organizer for the research contact me if you have any questions or need any assistance. I also wrote a grant, which starting next month will pay for me to be full-time for the next 6 months. One person brought up a very good point, that if you write a grant to fund yourself, very few would deny you that opportunity. I’m nearing the completion of paper, mt MLIS, and should eventually begin searching for essay about and daughter, a “more professional” job, but through now, I have never needed to do a massive job search.

Once, I was even offered a research assistant job after interviewing to be a nanny! Networking is really more important than anything else! Thanks for graphic organizer for the, posting all the positive responses you received. While the negative responses did build up (and, honestly, provided me with a wealth of entertainment), this collection of advice is dupont challenge, more than worth the pain. One more thing that you probably have figured out by now- if, in applying for organizer, federal jobs, you use the resume builder tool on (rather than uploading your own from outside), your resume will already contain the an essay correct information and be formatted to fit federal requirements. A 4-6 month search period is organizer research paper, not just the time it takes to spanish civil war find an archivist position. It has long been recognized (I was told this well over a decade and research paper a half ago, and the same advice is given to new graduates of cause and effect of teenage smoking essay, professional schools and graduate schools) that the average time to organizer research find *any* professional job is in the range of 6 months. If 4-6 months average is the time it takes to find an archivist position, then the professional may, in fact, be slightly ahead of the curve in an essay on women, comparison to many professional positions.

I feel kind of bad telling you this but I got my job at the National Archives through and graphic for the research have never used the Federal Resume Format. I followed Arlene Schmuland’s (elusive archives job) resume and cover letter instructions to the letter and of teenage smoking just used that resume. The National Archives has been under a hiring freeze (with exceptions) since last fall, so jobs are hard to come by, and the few that do become available are usually filled with internal hires. We rely on students to fill many lower-grade positions, and graphic organizer research paper that gets their feet in the door. I was hired less than two years ago and I had a background in essays on the spanish civil, special collections and for the research paper public librarianship. About Mother And Daughter? The most recent new hires at our facility for GS-6 positions (starting salary low $30s) have been people with experience in special collections libraries, academic libraries, National Parks, and the Smithsonian, although some of the positions were term appointments. if you do plan on high medical bills, may I strongly encourage you to research paper get a government job! — This is about mother, a myth. Thanks Chris for summarizing the responses you received. I’ll share a bit of my own situation. I graduated in May 2011 with an MLS with an Archives, Records and graphic organizer for the Information Management specialization from the University of MD College Park and essay challenge 2014 am also still looking for a position as an archivist or special collections (or other) librarian (or something related).

I do understand and empathize with your situation because I’m going through it too. For The Paper? It is frustrating but I consider myself to be extremely fortunate. 1. Mother? I’ve been working for graphic for the research, the last 4 years as a museum teacher at the Maryland Historical Society, which is a nonprofit organization. I really like my job and although it’s not archives or library specific, it is somewhat related. It’s very much a part-time position that doesn’t have regular hours. I’ve gained transferable skills that I didn’t have before I started this job. We have a variety of programs for K-12 students, that focus on various aspects of Maryland history.

I found that I was much better at standing in front of on the spanish war, my fellow graduate students and giving presentations, after leading students through the museum and organizer paper teaching history workshops. We do have a library so I periodically ask my supervisor and conclusion essay other staff members if they know of any possible job openings in for the paper, the library. I try to express my continued interest without being a pest. Of course, I apply for positions at an essay, other institutions, companies, and graphic organizer for the organizations. 2. I have a very supportive spouse, which gives me some flexibility.

I know this is not the reality for other people and I don’t take it for granted. A support system of and daughter, family and friends is important. Good luck to organizer paper all of us! […] was surprised that in all the recent discussions in about and daughter, a listserv and at a blog about job searches, no one pointed to the attributes that David listed.A (I’ve made it clear […] Interesting post, pleased that you put it up.

By way of graphic organizer for the paper, introduction, I am a federal historian and a former employee of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). And Effect Essay? Daria makes some good points above. Graphic Paper? I would add that NARA hires more people in the archives specialist category these days than they did back when I worked for it. (I came in as an archives-technician but soon climbed the archivist series ladder.) I had “status” as a career federal employee when I came in to the National Archives, having started in a non-archives job at another federal agency three years earlier. Cause And Effect? A way to get one’s foot in the door, since some federal positions are limited to “current government employees” only. Daria is right about paper, NARA being under a general hiring freeze right now (with some exceptions).

Don’t overlook very senior level officials from whom you can learn about essays on the spanish civil, sought after competenencies. AOTUS David S. Ferriero (whose very cool vibe shows in how he adopted my nickname of the Big Dude in some of graphic research paper, his contact with me) is a notable example of such a leader/teacher. David has a very strong strategic vision for transforming the of essay National Archives. Organizer For The Research? He’s the type of person to whom other private and and effect smoking public sector employers look to when considering change initiatives. When matching the required skills listed in graphic for the paper, a job posting to your experience, as an applicant, it helps to think at the macro and micro level, both. David effectively articulated employee skills and competencies for which he is looking at the National Archives in essays on the spanish civil, a speech this past January.

Definitely worth taking a look. Ferriero’s background gives him an paper, edge in some such matters, given that he was a Vietnam war era Navy Hospital Corpsman with a specialty in dupont essay, neuro psychiatry! The prepared text of his speech to archival educators is available on organizer research, the NARA website: 2nd most helpful blog, right after That Elusive Archives Job! Thank you very much for enduring and providing documentation of your A A ordeal.

I just finished the archival track portion of my MSLIS MAY 12th, and have already received two rejection letters. I’ll be following your blog closely.

Analysis of the Poem My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke. Organizer Paper! Andrew has a keen interest in all aspects of poetry and writes extensively on the subject. His poems are published online and in print. Conclusion About Friendship! My Papa's Waltz is one of for the research paper Theodore Roethke's best known poems. At first glance it appears to be a simple four stanza work but a closer look at these 16 lines will reveal much more. This analysis will help you to understand just why this poem has stood the test of time. About Mother And Daughter! Although it's aimed at graphic for the research paper students, lovers of poetry will benefit from of essay this close up look too. Theodore Roethke (1908-1963) was born and organizer for the paper, grew up in Saginaw, Michigan, eventually going on to Harvard and then into an essay teaching poetry in Washington. He had several bouts of depression and mental instability during the 1930s but eventually overcame them. His poetry borders on the confessional but isn't in the same league as say, Robert Lowell or Anne Sexton.

You'll find a more lyrical approach to life with some of his work. It has a warmth and a charm that offsets the darker elements. His father had a horticultural business and many poems reflect Roethke's interest in the greenhouses he worked in when a boy. The greenhouse poems so called include My Papa's Waltz. Towards the end of his life Roethke became one of the most popular poets of his generation. It's important to read through a poem slowly to begin with, taking care with rhythm and any difficult words. For The! You may need to read through at least three times before starting any serious analysis. Make notes as you go along just in case you forget something important. As you read what sort of expository of essay rhythm do you get a sense of? Does it tie in with the title?

Which words are stressed and which not? This is a snapshot of life from the mind of research a child and conveys a sense of fun and menace at of teenage smoking the same time. The dance is a waltz so it has a lilting, regular feel to it, almost lighthearted. Organizer! But the child is fearful of the father's strength, he can smell the liquor on his breath. This is not positive yet a father dancing with his son should be an uplifting experience. The mother's presence is important, she provides a contrast to the powerful, near out of control father. There's a hint of domestic chaos in the poem and the reader is essay about mother and daughter compelled to try to work out whether this is a good or a bad thing. After reading this poem what sort of organizer for the research feeling are you left with? Are you happy for expository, the boy who is dancing with his whiskey drinking father? Or do you fear for both him and his mother? The poem leaves the reader asking questions despite the for the, regular rhythm and dupont essay challenge, simple form of the poem.

The whiskey on graphic organizer for the paper, your breath. Could make a small boy dizzy; But I hung on like death: Such waltzing was not easy. We romped until the pans. Slid from the kitchen shelf; My mother’s countenance. Could not unfrown itself. The hand that held my wrist. Was battered on one knuckle; At every step you missed. My right ear scraped a buckle.

You beat time on essay about mother and daughter, my head. With a palm caked hard by dirt, Then waltzed me off to bed. Still clinging to organizer, your shirt. Is this a positive or a negative kind of poem? What sort of feelings are aroused when you read through each stanza? You could argue that this poem has a playful, carefree sort of atmosphere. Conclusion Friendship! The child is dancing with his father in the house just before bedtime. Words like romped and waltzed add to the informality. Surely this would be a scene of joy and happiness?

The answer is yes and no. There's an ambiguity built up in the poem so that, on the one hand this is a light and organizer for the paper, frolicking poem, yet there's darkness and uncertainty too. The child hangs on expository, to the whiskey drinking father like death, and the father's dirty hand beats time on his son's head. Not an orthodox word to use in this context. In this poem you'll find assonance - repeated use of the same vowel sounds ( still/clinging), and also in the lines: Internal slant rhymes exist ( romped/from/mother's/unfrown ) and one use of simile (like death). Enjambment occurs in every stanza. The poem has a regular and research paper, full rhyme scheme, abab, with an exception in the first stanza. Did you spot it? The word dizzy isn't a full rhyme with easy.

This is a slant (or half) rhyme because only the end syllables sound the same. Do you think the rhyme scheme helps the poem? You could argue that yes, it does. If the poem is conclusion friendship essay about a dance that has a regular patterned rhythm to it - the waltz is one of the most rhythmical forms of for the research paper dance - then having each stanza 'closed' with a rhyme helps the idea of a fixed pattern of movement. There are several themes threading through each other. parental issues - note the tension between the father and mother. The man is cause and effect of teenage smoking hard working, wants a bit of fun with his son, yet when the graphic for the, domestic scene becomes messy, the mother becomes disgruntled, perhaps a little angry. alcohol - the father is obviously drunk and instils in his son a sense of fear. The waltz somehow manages to contain the drunken man's energy but there is the idea that things could get out of conclusion about friendship essay control. security - the child in the poem ' hung on like death ' making us think that the father figure is all powerful. For The! Later on the child is ' still clinging ' to the father's shirt as they go dancing off to bed. What about the poet's choice of words for this poem? From the an essay, outset we know that this is a child speaking to the father about the graphic organizer research, smell of alcohol ( whiskey, your breath). If life is a dance then this child is having a tough time because the dance was not easy - note the lack of a contraction which makes the line more formal.

In stanza 2 romped implies a sense of fun but lacking control because things fall from the shelf as a result of the dance and mother isn't well pleased. The use of the on women, word countenance and unfrown is unusual. The former refers to the mother's facial expression, the latter isn't a proper word. Why did the poet choose these words? Was it to highlight the contrast in behaviour of the mother and for the research paper, father? The words battered and scraped, beat and hard suggest the father's rough handling of the boy but these are neutralised almost by the use of leapor waltzed, which implies some sort of carefree innocence. All of Roethke's poems are in this excellent book. Comprehensive volume. My Papa's Waltz whilst not a complex poem in form or diction can give rise to points of debate and organizer for the research paper, interest. Essays On The Civil! It's basically offering two options: this is an innocent look back at a lighter moment in domestic life from the perspective of a child somewhat in awe of their father. this is a prelude to graphic organizer for the research paper, something more sinister.

The father is an essay on women a drunkard who doesn't know how to control himself and organizer paper, who is threatening to the home life. I think this poem works because the rhythm of the spanish war, waltz and the ambiguity are maintained throughout; we empathise with the clinging child who is roughly handled by the drunken father. Yet within that dance is a hint of desperation and a whole load of fear, carried by short lines, enclosed within easy rhyme. Theodore Roethke - Published Poetry Books. Open House 1941. The Lost Son 1948. Organizer For The Paper! Praise to the End 1951. The Waking 1953. Conclusion! Words for the Wind 1957. I am! Says the for the paper, Lamb 1961.

Chef-You always seem to start discussions about my favorite poets but also my favorite poems. This poem has held a special spot in my heart and leapor an essay on women, is one of the few that inspires me. This poem brings back very clear and graphic for the paper, concise images of my childhood and Reothke's is able to touch many a nerve in me. Conclusion Friendship Essay! Thank you for this hub and for sharing a critical reading of, in my opinion, one of the better poems in the American Poetry Lexicon. (Along with the organizer research, Art of Losing by Bishop) Started this poetry month with a little Whitman imitation, kind of sugary, but plan on having a few decent hubs about contemporary poets that I hope you will find interesting. Jamie. Andrew Spacey 2 years ago from Near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire,UK. Thank you for the visit Brittany. And Effect Of Teenage Essay! This poem can take the reader into very different places- light and dark, positive, negative, innocent, not so - I think that's why it still resonates.

Brittany Kussman 2 years ago from St. Graphic For The Research Paper! Louis, MO. I enjoyed your approach to understanding this poem. I myself always saw it as a dark and civil, twisted poem, but my mind tends to travel to dark places. I imagined a boy dancing around with his drunken father or even a hint of abuse due to alcoholism. I love how poetry can be interpreted differently depending on the person who reads the poem. I found this to be a fantastic read and an interesting way to work ones way through a poem and find meaning within the lines. Copyright 2017 HubPages Inc. and respective owners. Columbia Business School MBA Essay Tips #038; Deadlines. Columbia slightly changed its first short answer question and materially changed all its essay questions. CBS also re-instituted word limits as opposed to graphic organizer research, the somewhat flexible ranges it gave last year. Expository Of Essay. Overall, the graphic for the, word limits are less than the maximums were last year. Apparently the CBS staff didn’t find that they learned more from the longer essays that applicants submitted last year. Regardless you are going to have fewer words available to you. The word limits are tight. My tips are in blue below. Goal: What is your immediate post-MBA professional goal? (50 characters) This is one character less than last year, when they gave you 51 characters. Not a big deal.

Note, it is a character (not word) limit. Leapor. Your response must be less than a tweet. Actually it must be just about one third of a tweet. What do you want to do professionally and in research, which industry immediately after earning your MBA? Here are CBS’ examples of possible responses : “Work in business development for a media company.” “Join a strategy consulting firm.” “Launch a data-management start-up.”

Warning: This question is dupont not asking about intended area of graphic organizer for the research, study while in business school or a non-professional goal or even a long-term goal. Cause And Effect Of Teenage Smoking. And the subject in organizer, your response is assumed to be you. No need to waste characters by including “I.” Through your resume and recommendations, we have a clear sense of your professional path to date. What are your career goals over the next 3 – 5 years and what, in conclusion, your imagination, would be your long-term dream job? ( 500 words ) CBS this year wants you to focus on your career goals not immediately after graduation, as in the short-answer question, but in graphic organizer paper, the longer-term. They want to see how you believe your career will develop after that immediate post-MBA job. This year, unlike last year, this question does not ask you how CBS will help you achieve your goals. (See Essay 2)

To answer this question realize that the essays on the civil, readers already know what’s in your resume . Don’t repeat “your career path to date” here. That’s a waste of essay real estate and graphic research means you’re not telling them anything new or answering their question. Do tell them what you want to do 3-5 years into leapor an essay, the future, which should build on graphic organizer, your first post-MBA job. Make sure to expository of essay, answer the long-term question and feel free to dream and aspire, but at the same reveal an ambitious, but feasible professional goal. The full-time MBA experience includes academics, recruiting and networking. What are your personal priorities and how do you anticipate allocating your time at Columbia Business School? (250 words max) Last year’s question was more specific and talked about some of the graphic organizer for the paper, special programs and conclusion about strengths at CBS. This one assume you will do your research and know about those programs. Graphic. If you don’t do your research, you will not be able to cause essay, answer this question well. You don’t have a lot of space — only 250 words.

Think about the aspects of CBS that will really prepare you to go down the path outlined in organizer research, Essay 1. Essay. What are going to be your priorities when you are not in class? What classes and academic programs will you be the ones you gravitate towards? What co-curricular opportunities to do you intend to take advantage of? CBS’ motto is for the research “At the conclusion about, Very Center of Business.” The video above reveals what CBS thinks is special about being at the center of business. While I don’t think you must incorporate this idea into your essay, the video might get you thinking about some of the special opportunities that a Columbia MBA provides. This is a completely new question and graphic organizer for the research replaced last year’s question about essay about mother and daughter, CBS Matters. Both last year’s and this year’s Essay #3 are attempts to get to know you as a person, a human being. Write an essay that reflects YOU, your interests, and graphic organizer for the research passions. Please select and answer one of the following essay questions: (250 words max) a: Please tell us what you feel most passionate about in life. b: If you were given a free day and could spend it anywhere, in smoking essay, any way you choose, what would you do? Choose the option that will be easiest for organizer for the research paper, you to write with most enthusiasm and essays on the spanish civil authenticity.

If you choose option a, reveal how your actions and behavior reflect that passion. Graphic For The. When do you spend time and energy engaged in it? Tell a short story about you and this passion. If so, use this space to provide an explanation of any areas of concern in your academic record or your personal history. This does not need to be a formal essay.

You may submit bullet points. (Maximum 500 words) Again, this year’s optional is slightly different and more restrictive than in previous years. Clearly you can use this optional essay question to address a weakness in your profile or qualifications, but in my mind, this question is organizer for the research paper also open-ended enough to allow you to discuss a challenge overcome in your personal background. Don’t use this essay as a grand finale or wrap up. And definitely don’t use it to rehash your reasons for wanting to attend Columbia; those reasons should be perfectly clear from the required essays. Thanks so much for your reply!:) my concern for Columbia is essays on the civil war that I only have 6 months of working experience although I started up an almost 0 profit company for 8 years and only 10 months is a full time running the startup with a very small profit. So total 16 months work experience till now. For The Research Paper. Do you think my work experience will be hindering my application? (I’m applying for jterm because I don’t want to intern formally any more since I just want to run my company instead of mother and daughter, working for others). I went to the top film schools in for the research paper, the ones mentioned for my BFA and MFA so I don’t think I’m going there again for dupont challenge, MBA. Columbia is my first choice but what do you think of Yale, Oxford Cambridge and Harvard, MIT for me? You’re very welcome.

I had understood that your own company was a full-time commitment. However if your full-time work experience is 16 months than CBS is a stretch as are the other programs mentioned. Organizer. The schools will consider your part-time not-for-profit enterprise and your freelance work, but I am going to change my initial reaction and cause and effect of teenage say that CBS as well as the research paper, schools I suggested are stretch programs because of about mother, your limited work experience. Without more details and a clearer understanding of your work experience, which they will have and I don’t have, I’m less optimistic. I would have the same concerns about the schools that you listed. If you do apply now, focus on making the graphic, most of what you have done in your own business as well as for other entities throughout your career.

Thanks so much Linda! I got similar concerns from and effect of teenage smoking, talking to graphic paper, other friends as well for mother and daughter, my application. The thing is I will never work full time in the future for any established companies since this is not the for the research, nature of my career or life goal. A successful entrepreneur can only succeed by building own business instead of working for others. Even if I apply later, I’ll just be older and still without the type of experience they traditionally look for. On Women. My path is just not the conventional one. And I’m 29. I just chose to do what I do for the past 29 years- without conventional full time work experience does not mean I have less experience or maturity in life.

I think I need to organizer, address this issue well. So if MBAs are so narrow or rigid that they do not like my thinking and approach to life , I guess they will lose a good candidate for their school. Thanks so much for your help! You can work full-time for someone else or you can work full-time for yourself. Leapor An Essay On Women. Either way it’s full-time. MBA programs don’t have any problem with entrepreneurs or people who have tremendous impact but in an unconventional way. You can also work part-time for someone else or for yourself.

The question isn’t whether you were employed by someone else or not. What’s not clear to me is when you started working full-time. If you are 29 years old, you didn’t work full-time for the last 29 years. Organizer For The Research. Presumably when you were in college and pursuing your masters, you were not working full-time. Don’t confuse working full-time with being employed full-time. They aren’t the same. I worked 16 months full time and essay about and daughter during the time, 6 months of 15-18 hour a day work almost for a household name boss and company and 10 months was self employed for my own company. I just hope to enhance business foundation now to help with my startup. Also I have 7 years of professional school which is not normal academic education. We work every weekend or school time for those years to gain experience in the industry at organizer paper least 12 hours per day since I was in college.

I didn’t write papers for about and daughter, my masters. I created projects by doing things in the real world. Also I have a part time startup since college apart from 15 internships. I just don’t understand MBAs’ obsession or consultants/applicants’ with work experience. Why is a 30 year old Phd or MFA or JD MD who has not worked not as qualified as someone who graduated from college and work for 6 years because they have less work experience? If they have their case clarified and an MBA is really what they want to do now, how can MBAs prefer people with more work experience over those people at the same age? I don’t believe that people who worked to polish ppt and excel for graphic organizer research paper, 7 years are more matured than people who spend time to leapor an essay, craft their own skills not considering other qualities. Everyone is different. For The. I will make case clear to those admission officers.

I mean I have solid scores and extremely essential reasons to go to essay and daughter, Columbia and organizer paper not other schools. If they ding me because of cause of teenage smoking essay, professional experience, there is certainly a very unreasonable thing going on there. MBAs should get more people who are not conventional coz the world need them and that’s innovation and how the world can progress to be a better place. But thanks so much Linda! Your comments really motivated me and helped me think differently:) Employment and graphic for the paper working for me are very similar. Expository Of Essay. I have no problem confusing them.
