paper writing rules GENERAL PRINCIPLES RULES OF THUMB. Professor David Post. There is nothing more important in creative dissertation theology the practice of indian essayist, law than your ability to put together quality written work. I am committed to helping you produce the highest quality paper you are capable of producing. But be forewarned: Writing is difficult, for everyone – at least, for dissertation everyone I have ever met who does it well. If you think you can produce top-quality written work without pain and parental investment hard work you are either (a) incredibly gifted, or (b) mistaken. Read these guidelines through carefully, and re-read them periodically during the course of your writing project, especially before you turn in any written work to me.

This will save me a great deal of time, and dissertation it will save you a great deal of aggravation. I have very strong views about the process of writing, and I demand a serious commitment on your part. Please ask yourself, after you have read the forests for water and wetlands essay, following, whether you are prepared to follow the dissertation, path I describe. If not, please feel free to sophisticated essay, reconsider working with me; I will not be offended, and you will be spared considerable future unhappiness. These guidelines are divided into “general principles” and “rules of thumb.” The general principles are for you to think about; the rules of thumb are for creative theology you to obey blindly. PART ONE: general principles. 1. “Good writing is like a windowpane.” [George Orwell] The point of legal writing is not to make the simple complicated – for indian essayist example, by using lots of impenetrable phrases, long sentences, and big words. The point of legal writing is to make the theology, complicated simple . Think about it. Do not be afraid of university of maryland admissions question, simplicity. Though you may have been taught that simplicity is a sign of stupidity, the opposite is more often true.

2. “ Your language becomes clear and strong not when you can no longer add, but when you can no longer take away .” [Isaac Babel] Less usually is more. Write as though you will get a nickel for each word you take out of your drafts over your lifetime. Say what you need to say. Creative Theology. Eliminate unnecessary words. Get to the point.

Example 1 (from an actual student paper) : In Blumenthal v. Write. Drudge , 992 F. Supp. 44 (D.D.C. Creative Dissertation. 1998), the university essay, district court ruled that the defendant was subject to creative theology, the personal jurisdiction of the court. In so ruling, the court found that both prongs of the personal jurisdiction test had been met . First, the court found that the a cover letter 2014, defendant fell under the District of Columbia 's long arm statute, D.C. Code § 13-423, and was therefore subject to the jurisdiction of the court. Second, the theology, court found that the defendant possessed the minimum contacts with the District of Columbia necessary for the exercise of personal jurisdiction to be Constitutional. Example 1 revised. In Blumenthal v. Drudge , 992 F. Supp. 44 (D.D.C. 1998), the district court ruled that the dvd, defendant was subject to theology, the court’s personal jurisdiction. The defendant satisfied both prongs of the parental, District of Columbia's long arm statute, D.C.

Code § 13-423, and possessed the minimum contacts with the District of creative dissertation, Columbia necessary for the exercise of personal jurisdiction to be constitutional. [ cite ] Example 1 has 99 words; Example 2 has 62 – almost 40% fewer. Not coincidentally, Example 2 is also better – more direct, clearer, easier to follow. Example 1, continued: In order to establish personal jurisdiction under D.C. Code § 13-423(a)(4), which is the lancia thesis dvd, only applicable provision, the court must find that the injury was caused by the defendant's act or omission outside of the dissertation theology, district of Columbia and essay the defendant (1) regularly does or solicits business in the District of dissertation theology, Columbia, or (2) derives substantial revenue from goods used or consumed or services rendered in write essay the District, or (3) engages in any other persistent course of conduct here.

Drudge , 992 F. Supp. at 53, 54. In addition to satisfying the theology, personal jurisdiction provision of § 13-423(a )( 4), the of maryland admissions essay, defendant must also have sufficient minimum contacts with the creative, jurisdiction in university of maryland essay question which the court sits such that maintenance of a suit does not offend 'traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice.' Drudge , 992 F. Supp. at 57 quoting International Shoe Co. v. Washington , 326 U.S. 310, 316 (1945). The court further goes on to state that an Internet advertisement alone, without something more, is not enough to satisfy this minimum contacts standard. Drudge , 992 F. Creative Dissertation Theology. Supp. at 57 citing Cybersell Inc. v. Cybersell, Inc. , 130 F.3d 414 ( 9th Cir. Indian Essayist. 1997). Example 1 continued, revised. To establish personal jurisdiction under D.C. Code § 13-423(a)(4), the court must find that the injury was caused by the defendant's act or omission outside of the District of theology, Columbia and that the defendant (1) regularly does or solicits business in the District of Columbia, (2) derives substantial revenue from goods used or consumed or services rendered in the District, or (3) engages in any other persistent course of conduct here. Drudge , 992 F. Supp. at 53, 54. For Water And Wetlands. In addition, the creative, defendant must have sufficient minimum contacts with the jurisdiction in letter 2014 which the court sits such that maintenance of a suit does not offend 'traditional notions of fair play and substantial justice.' Drudge , 992 F. Supp. at 57 (quoting International Shoe Co. Dissertation Theology. v. Washington , 326 U.S.

310, 316 (1945)). An Internet advertisement alone is not enough to satisfy this minimum contacts standard. Drudge , 992 F. Supp. at 57, citing Cybersell Inc. v. Cybersell, Inc. , 130 F.3d 414 ( 9th Cir. 1997). Again, the university of maryland, revision is shorter (189 vs. Theology. 160 words), and better. 3. Read the cases. Read more of them, and read the ones you have read over 2014 again. Only occasionally do students do anywhere close to the amount of research in the case law that is creative, required for forests for water a good paper, however, where the law is – not in creative dissertation theology the law review articles, not in a cover letter the treatises, not in the trade publication, not in the ALR annotations, but in the cases and other primary material (statutes, treaties, constitutions). Secondary sources can be helpful – they can point you to the cases that you need to read, or, on rare occasions, they can help you to theology, understand the cases you have read.

They should never be used as substitutes for indian essayist the primary material on creative dissertation theology, which they’re based. And if that’s not enough of a reason to spend the bulk of your time reading judicial opinions, here’s another: They are, by far, the best models for forests and wetlands essay the kind of writing that you are learning how to do. You read opinions so that you can start to soak up a way of dissertation, talking about legal questions – a jargon, customary phrasings, ways of thesis, using and talking about precedent, and the like. Creative Dissertation. If you read lots of opinions you are much less likely to write things like the sentence I’m looking at right now, from indian essayist, another student paper: “Personal jurisdiction can no longer be missing ‘because the defendant did not physically enter the forum state’. Creative Dissertation Theology. Burger-King Corp. v. Rudzewicz .”

No court opinion that I have ever read has used the dvd, word “ missing ” in reference to personal jurisdiction. I have, therefore, no clear idea what this sentence means. But worse, it signals to me that the author of this sentence has either (a) not read very many opinions dealing with the question of theology, personal jurisdiction, or (b) has not been paying much attention to those s/he has read. Neither is a good thing to communicate to university of maryland admissions, your readers. Third, you need to read lots of opinions because to be a good writer you must learn to be a good reader. It’s quite obvious, if you think about it for a minute. Theology. Writing involves reading what you have written, identifying its weaknesses, and revising to indian essayist, eliminate those weaknesses. Over and over and over creative dissertation again . (See Principle #9) It’s not easy. You’ll get better at it if you start reading the cases critically, identifying their weaknesses; as you read, always ask yourself: What question(s) are the court answering?

How persuasive is their reasoning? And finally , you need to read lots of opinions to find models for the kind of writing you want to learn how to do. For Water. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. When you read an opinion (or any piece of persuasive writing, for that matter – anything that works through an argument and reaches some conclusion) that you think is well-written, well-organized, and effective, ask yourself: what makes it work well? How is it organized? Is there an dissertation, introduction, and what functions does it serve? How does the author manage the parental thesis, transitions between sections?

How does the author let the reader know the overall plan of the work? When does the author summarize what has come before? Writing is a craft; find others who perform it well, observe their methods, and try to emulate them. 4. Legal documents are persuasive documents; they answer some question, and they persuade the reader that the creative dissertation, answer is the lancia dvd, correct one. They are not “book reports.” The goal, ultimately, is to state a specific question (or set of questions), to provide the reader with an answer to that question(s), accompanied by creative theology, a logical argument designed to persuade the reader that the answer you have come up with is the correct one. You will not write a paper “about copyright law” ; you will pose, and then you will answer, a specific question about copyright law . All legal writing, I believe, is forests and wetlands, like this: briefs, judicial opinions, memoranda of law, etc. All are designed to persuade the reader of something by theology, the force of argument(s). I cannot stress this strongly enough; far and away, the most common reason that student papers are unsatisfactory is the absence of any sense that they are designed to marshal arguments in university essay question support of the author’s answer to a particular question. Much legal writing is straightforward, in the sense that you know precisely where you are going when you start.

When writing a brief, for example, you know where your argument has to lead: You are trying to persuade the reader that “the defendant [ i.e. , your client] is not liable for doing X,” or “The defendant [the opposing party] is liable for theology doing Y,” or “Defendant’s motion for summary judgment should be granted/denied,” or “The court cannot constitutionally exercise jurisdiction over the claim in this case,” or . Thesis. . . . Knowing exactly where you want to go, you can then work backwards from creative dissertation theology, there to put together your argument. With a research paper, on the other hand, you don’t really know where you are going when you begin. Write Sophisticated. You don’t know when you begin, in other words, the answer to creative theology, the question you’re posing – that’s why you have to do research. You don’t really know (when you start) “whether section 512(c) of the Copyright Act covers the forests essay, dissemination of dissertation, decryption software”; you don’t know (when you start) “whether the purposes underlying the Patent Act are furthered by a cover 2014, Internet business method patents”; you don’t know (when you start) “whether courts can assert personal jurisdiction over foreign website operators”; you don’t know (when you start) “whether clickwrap licenses are or are not enforceable under the Uniform Electronic Transactions Act,” . . Creative. . This makes research papers more difficult to write than briefs; it is hard to construct an argument when you don’t know where the argument is going to go. On the other hand, this uncertainty about where you’re headed can be turned to university of maryland admissions essay, your advantage. You can change your answer – indeed, you can even modify the question you’re asking – as you go along . This is a luxury you don’t have with briefs; you can’t say to dissertation, your client: “Well, I’ve finished my research and, lo and behold, I have discovered that you are , after all, liable under section so-and-so of the Securities Act”! But with a research paper, you may start out with some thesis – e.g. Lancia. , that section 512(c) of the Copyright Act covers the dissemination of decryption software – but then conclude, after doing research on the question, that much stronger arguments exist for the opposite proposition ( i.e., that section 512(c) of the Copyright Act does not cover the creative dissertation, dissemination of decryption software). 5. The purpose of indian essayist, writing. You have to do two things when you are undertaking a legal writing project.

First, you have to figure out the answer to whatever question you trying to creative dissertation, answer: Does section 512(c) of the Copyright Act cover dissemination of decryption software? Are the purposes underlying the Patent Act furthered by Internet business method patents? Are clickwrap licenses enforceable under the university of maryland admissions essay question, Uniform Electronic Transactions Act? Etc. The second job, which you can only accomplish after you have accomplished the first, is to write your paper in such a way that you persuade the reader that the your answer is the correct one. In the best of all possible worlds, you would write two papers: The first would be the one you need to write in dissertation order to figure out the answer to your question . The second paper is the one that communicates what you have to say to your readers . Most of you will not, actually, write two separate papers; but you need to think about your project as if you were going to do so. The first paper is the one that people often lose sight of – the one that helps you figure out what it is you’re trying to and wetlands essay, say. The only way for most of dissertation, us mortals to construct a complicated, many-layered argument is to write it down to see whether it makes sense. Unless the question you’ve posed is a very simple one, you are not going to be able to write sophisticated essay, figure out the answer without putting your argument down on paper and reading it through to see if it holds water; it’s going to be far too complicated for you to keep the whole thing in your head. Dissertation. Figuring out whether section 512(c) of the Copyright Act covers dissemination of sophisticated essay, decryption software is probably going to creative theology, require you to figure out (a) what do you mean by “decryption software?,” and (b) “what does 512(c) actually say?,” and (c) “what did Congress mean by 2014, using the creative dissertation, word “service provider” in Section 512?,” and university of maryland admissions question (d) “is decryption software considered ‘speech’ so that First Amendment applies to creative dissertation theology, our interpretation of lancia dvd, section 512(c)?,” and perhaps many other questions like that. You can’t possibly keep all of that in your head and figure out creative dissertation theology where your argument is write essay, headed without writing it down and reading it through.

Use your drafts, in other words, to help make your argument better; if your argument doesn’t “work” when it is dissertation, written down, it doesn’t work at all; if you can’t write it down, you don’t have an argument (yet). The “second paper” – or your other task – is quite different. Once you have figured out where you are going – once you have written something that enables you to see the answer to the question that you have posed for yourself – you need to walk the reader through your argument as effortlessly and essay question painlessly as possible. The reader does not necessarily need to creative, see every step that you took to reach your conclusion; you may have taken some wrong turns, and gone down some dead ends, in indian essayist trying to figure out how to answer the question, and the reader does not need to see all of creative, those (and will be very confused if you show them to him/her). Another way to say this: When you begin, you are writing for you , to help you understand what is going on. As you near the end, you write for your reader. 6. Investment. You will not learn to write well by talking – to creative dissertation theology, me, or to anyone else – about indian essayist writing; you will learn to creative, write well by writing. I’m always happy to talk to you about your project. But the bottom line is that talking to me is much less valuable than most students think it is.

Talking about indian essayist writing is like talking about carpentry, or about playing the piano, or about creative riding a bicycle – interesting, but rarely of much help if you are trying to writing a cover letter, learn how to do those things. You have to do them, over and over and over. Writing – actually practicing the skill you are trying to master – is creative dissertation, almost always more useful to you than talking about writing. Write Sophisticated. I’m not suggesting you should not talk to me if you have questions; but if you would like to creative dissertation, talk to me about parental something, write down what you want to talk about. Theology. A sentence, or a paragraph, or an outline, describing your thoughts, or the question(s) you have, will do. That will not only give you valuable practice in write sophisticated essay the art of writing, but I guarantee you that it will make our subsequent conversation much more productive.

Writing well is often painful; it is always difficult and unbelievably time-consuming. It will always take longer — usually a lot longer — than you think (or than you’d like) to get an outline or a decent draft together, let alone your final product. Theology. You must commit to spend however much time it takes to letter 2014, produce a quality product. 8. There is, unfortunately, no such thing as an “A for Effort” when it comes to written work . The reader doesn’t know, and the reader doesn’t care, how much time you spent producing whatever it is you have produced, how much sweat poured off your brow during long nights in the library, etc. All he or she has, and all he or she cares about, is what you put in his or her hands; that is all that matters to creative dissertation theology, the reader because that is all that the reader can see. Your argument must stand on its own two feet. You must always read your own work from the reader’s perspective . Sounds easy enough; it is not.

Learning how to do this is forests essay, critically important. Creative Dissertation. Before you submit anything to me – an thesis, outline, a draft, whatever – you must read it over, from creative, start to finish, in one sitting , as if you were the person to whom it is addressed -- the ‘average reader’ (if you are writing a law journal article), the partner in a law firm (if you are writing a memorandum to a partner), the judge (if you are writing a brief or legal memo). One of the hardest things about writing well is remembering that your reader does not have in his/her head everything about the subject matter that you have in university of maryland essay question your head ; indeed, the reader may have no information at all about the subject matter other than what is in your paper. Creative Theology. Your reader will start at a cover letter 2014 the beginning of your paper and read through to the end, picking up whatever information you are giving him or her and only that information, and only in creative dissertation the order in which you present it. You must do the same if you want to have any chance of getting the reader to understand what you are saying. Write Sophisticated Essay. Developing the ability to edit your own work in this way is far more important than whatever you may come up with as far as substance is concerned in this project. You need to revise your work as necessary so that it makes sense to creative dissertation, that reader. 2014. You don’t stop because you have completed one, or two, or four revisions of your paper; you stop when it is clear to the reader. If that takes five, or fifteen, revisions, that’s what it takes. Creative Theology. See Rule #8; you don’t get any prizes for the number of revisions you’ve done, you get prizes for expressing yourself clearly. Please: If you are handing something in on Thursday afternoon , do not print it out and of maryland read it over on Thursday morning; leave yourself time for a final round of revisions before you hand it in.

10. Creative Dissertation. Everything you put on the page matters . Everything – every word, every bit of punctuation, every decision to begin a paragraph in one place instead of another. That’s probably not true in indian essayist every field; it’s true, though, in the law. Take the lowly comma. When Robert Frost’s Collected Poems was originally published, it contained these lines (in “Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening”): “The woods are lovely, dark, and deep. But I have promises to keep. And miles to go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep.” In fact, what Frost had written was: “The woods are lovely, dark and deep. But I have promises to keep.

And miles to dissertation, go before I sleep. And miles to go before I sleep.” Insertion of the extra comma in the first version makes a big difference, does it not? We are not poets, and sophisticated the texts we read and write as lawyers are, heaven knows, not poetry. But consider the following. The Copyright Act of creative dissertation theology, 1874 granted copyright protection to “any engraving, cut, print, or . Parental Investment. . . chromo[ lithograph].” It also provided that “in the dissertation theology, construction of the act the parental investment thesis, words ‘engraving,’ ‘cut,’ and creative dissertation theology ‘print’ shall be applied only to pictorial illustrations or works connected to the fine arts.” Question: if something is a “pictorial illustration” that is not “connected to lancia, the fine arts,” is creative dissertation, it protected by essay question, copyright?

That is, does “connected to the fine arts” modify both “pictorial illustrations” and “works,” or just “works”? See Bleistein v. Donaldson Lithographic Co. , 188 U.S. 239 (1903) (Holmes, J.). Dissertation Theology. Note how the meaning of this phrase would change if (a) there were a comma after “pictorial illustrations” (so that it read: “the words ‘engraving,’ ‘cut,’ and ‘print’ shall be applied only to pictorial illustrations, or works connected to forests for water, the fine arts”) or (b) there were commas after both the words “pictorial illustrations” and dissertation theology “works” (the words ‘engraving,’ ‘cut,’ and ‘print’ shall be applied only to indian essayist, pictorial illustrations, or works, connected to the fine arts”). Here’s another, more complicated, illustration. Section 512(e) of the theology, Copyright Act provides: “(e) When a public or other nonprofit institution of higher education is a service provider , and when a faculty member or graduate student who is an thesis dvd, employee of such institution is performing a teaching or research function , for dissertation theology the purposes of subsections (a) and (b) of this section such faculty member or graduate student shall be considered to be a person other than the institution, and for university essay question the purposes of subsections (c) and (d) such faculty member's or graduate student's knowledge or awareness of his or her infringing activities shall not be attributed to creative dissertation, the institution, if?? (A) such faculty member's or graduate student's infringing activities do not involve the provision of forests, online access to instructional materials that are or were required or recommended, within the preceding 3?year period, for a course taught at the institution by such faculty member or graduate student; (B) the institution has not, within the preceding 3?year period, received more than two notifications described in theology subsection (c)(3) of claimed infringement by such faculty member or graduate student, and letter 2014 such notifications of creative dissertation, claimed infringement were not actionable under subsection (f); and. (C) the institution provides to all users of its system or network informational materials that accurately describe, and promote compliance with, the laws of the United States relating to copyright .” Read it again, carefully. Here’s a little problem of statutory interpretation. Assume that: (a) Temple University is a “nonprofit institution of higher education” that is sophisticated, a “service provider” within the meaning of subsection (e); (b) A faculty member – call him “Professor Post” – is employed by Temple University , and he is performing a “teaching or research function” within the meaning of subsection (e); (c) Temple University does not provide “informational materials that accurately describe, and promote compliance with, the laws of the United States relating to copyright” to all users of creative theology, its system, i.e. A Cover Letter. , it does not meet the condition laid down in subparagraph (C) of the above provision. The question: Is Professor Post “a person other than the institution” for “the purposes of subsections (a) and (b) of this section” (whatever subsections (a) and creative (b) might be)?

The answer is “No.” Why? Because “for the purposes of lancia thesis dvd, subsections (a) and (b) of this section” Prof. Post “shall be considered to be a person other than the institution” only if the creative dissertation theology, conditions in sub-paragraphs (A), (B), and (C) are satisfied. 2014. Because the condition in sub-paragraph (C) is not satisfied, Prof. Post shall not be considered to be a person other than the institution. Theology. [If you don’t see that, re-read the section over until you do]. Now note what happens if we omit the comma before the word “if” at the end of the first paragraph . Investment Thesis. The section now reads as follows: “(e) When a public or other nonprofit institution of higher education is a service provider, and creative when a faculty member or graduate student who is an admissions essay, employee of such institution is theology, performing a teaching or research function, for the purposes of subsections (a) and indian essayist (b) of this section such faculty member or graduate student shall be considered to be a person other than the institution, and for the purposes of subsections (c) and creative dissertation theology (d) such faculty member's or graduate student's knowledge or awareness of his or her infringing activities shall not be attributed to the institution if ?? (A) such faculty member's or graduate student's infringing activities do not involve the provision of online access to instructional materials that are or were required or recommended, within the preceding 3?year period, for a course taught at thesis the institution by such faculty member or graduate student; (B) the institution has not, within the creative dissertation, preceding 3?year period, received more than two notifications described in subsection (c)(3) of claimed infringement by such faculty member or graduate student, and such notifications of lancia dvd, claimed infringement were not actionable under subsection (f); and. (C) the institution provides to all users of its system or network informational materials that accurately describe, and promote compliance with, the laws of the United States relating to copyright.” The answer to the question presented is now “Yes.” Removing the comma completely changes the meaning of the subsection. Without the creative, comma, for “the purposes of subsections (a) and (b) of this section” Prof. Post “shall be considered a person other than the institution” – full stop.

The conditions in sub-paragraphs (A), (B), and (C) apply only to determining whether the indian essayist, faculty member will be considered to be a person other than the dissertation, institution for purposes of subparagraphs (c) and (d) . (If you don’t see that, read the investment, section over again – possibly aloud – until you do). Section 512(e) is theology, much less beautiful than “Stopping by forests essay, the Woods on a Snowy Evening.” The moral of the story, however, is that in legal prose, as in poetry, everything you put down on the page matters – every word, every punctuation mark, everything. Creative Dissertation. If you don’t start cultivating that attitude towards your own writing, you will never learn to write well . PART TWO: critical rules of thumb – follow these or die!! 1. Write your Introduction LAST. Your paper will, basically, consist of three parts: an Introduction, an parental investment thesis, Argument, and a Conclusion – in that order. It would, obviously, be silly to begin writing your Conclusion first, before you know exactly what you are going to say. It is creative dissertation theology, equally silly to forests for water and wetlands, write your Introduction first. You must know where your argument is going in order to write a decent Introduction, because the function of the Introduction is to dissertation, tell the reader what’s coming. Once you know what your argument is going to be, it is very easy to write an Introduction; before you know what your argument is going to indian essayist, be, it is creative dissertation theology, virtually impossible to do so.

2. Use topic sentences. Question. Each paragraph in your paper should make one point, and each paragraph should begin with a declarative sentence stating that point. These “topic sentences” are enormously important. Read your paper over, frequently, as I am going to: reading only the first sentence in theology each paragraph . Ask yourself: If you knew nothing about this subject matter, would this reading of the paper, topic sentence by topic sentence with nothing else, have made sense to you? If the answer is “no,” you’re not finished revising. 3. Eliminate the passive voice from your papers . Do not say “As the writing a cover 2014, Internet grew, new commercial uses were found,” say “As the Internet grew, users found new commercial uses.” Do not say “The 5-step test for determining likelihood of confusion under the creative, Lanham Act was crafted by the court”; tell the a cover letter, reader who crafted it (“The Eighth Circuit crafted the creative dissertation, 5-step test for determining likelihood of confusion under the Lanham Act”). Do not say “Where there is no general jurisdiction, the indian essayist, possibility of dissertation, specific jurisdiction must be examined,” say “Where there is no general jurisdiction, the court must examine the possibility of specific jurisdiction.” Do not say “The modern framework for analyzing a question of personal jurisdiction was developed in International Shoe Co. v. Washington , 326 U.S.

310 (1945), say “The Supreme Court developed the modern framework for analyzing questions of personal jurisdiction in essay International Shoe Co. v. Washington , 326 U.S. 310 (1945).” Always write so that the reader can tell who the theology, actor is who is performing the action described in your sentences. You may, if you wish, treat this as just another arbitrary grammatical rule to be followed by rote – like “don’t end a sentence with a preposition,” or “don’t split infinitives.” In other words: Just do it . It is, however, not an arbitrary rule at all; rewriting your sentences to eliminate uses of the passive voice will help you think . Indian Essayist. Here’s an example from a draft paper I received a while ago: “Despite the radio broadcasters’ argument that they made little profit on broadcasts, ASCAP was authorized to demand payment for the broadcast of copyrighted works.” Interesting – but who “authorized” ASCAP to do that? Congress? Where?

In a statute? What statute? Or was it a court? Some administrative agency? The New York City Council? As it turns out, that’s a very difficult, and a very interesting and important, question. I would wager that the creative, author of this sentence didn’t know the parental investment thesis, answer, and s/he was hiding behind the passive voice to obscure that lack of theology, knowledge. We all do this, all the time, and we shouldn’t; eliminating the passive voice from our writing will help us avoid it.

4. Quote first; explain later. The actual words used in writing letter the statutes or the dissertation theology, opinions under discussion always matter . Do not tell me what you think a statutory section means until you have given me the actual language in the statute; do not tell me what you think a court meant until you first tell me what it said. If the statutory language (or court’s opinion) is clear, then it’s clear and nothing more need be said. If it needs explanation and interpretation (as it almost always does), explain and interpret – after you tell me what the words are that you are explaining and interpreting. I don’t want to know your opinion about the statute or the case – I want to know (a) what it says, and (b) what it means. 5. Do not thump on the table. Do not ever say “It is clear that . . . ., ” or “it is obvious that.” Do not use the words “clearly,” or “obviously,” or “undoubtedly,” as in “the statute clearly authorizes . . . .,” or “the Feist opinion obviously changes copyright law in important ways.” If it is clear, or obvious, or free from doubt, then there if no need to say that – the reader will already see it because you have made it clear. Ninety-nine times out of 100, you use these words or phrases as crutches, to obscure the forests and wetlands, fact that you have not made something clear, or obvious, when you should have. 6. Use parallel structure.

If you are talking about general and specific jurisdiction, and one paragraph begins, “In order for there to creative dissertation, be general jurisdiction, the defendant must have . . . Parental. .,” then begin the next paragraph about the parallel topic (specific jurisdiction) the same way: “In order for there to be specific jurisdiction, the defendant must have . . Creative Theology. .” Make it simple. 7. Avoid unnecessary introductory and transition words. Words or phrases like “Moreover,” “In addition,” “Furthermore,” “As such,” “Notwithstanding,” are sometimes useful, but rarely; most of the time they get people into trouble. They tend to be inserted when the logical transition between your sentences makes no sense; if you have two sentences that do not belong together, throwing in an “In addition” at the beginning of the second sentence will not help. Use these devices very sparingly. 8. Watch out for question “as explained below” and “as explained above.” These are signals that your work is not yet properly organized. What is a reader supposed to do when he/she encounters “as explained below” in a paper? Stop reading and go “below” to wherever you explain what needs to be explained?

If something needs to be explained now, explain it now. Always remember: readers read from left to right; do not make the reader’s understanding of something depend on something that you say later . 9. Read your work aloud . Dissertation. Writing, Lawrence Sterne wrote (in his novel Tristram Shandy ), is conversation. He was correct. If your paper, or outline, or memo, or letter, or brief, or . . . does not make any sense to a listener , chances are very good that it won’t make any sense to a reader . At the very least, ask someone who knows nothing about your topic to read through what you have written; if your friend/spouse/partner/cousin can’t make heads or tails out of what you’ve written, chances are very good that I won’t be able to either.

Hope to see some more! Good to essay look at , but like what some others agreed, they would probably end up in the bin of most HR managers. HR managers typically go through at least 10s to hundreds of resumes for a particular job opening in a respectable firm, the creative theology, last thing they wanna do while skimming through is to learn your color coded graphics and pie charts to figure out what you#8217;re good at indian essayist and what you#8217;re not. I always suggest that your CV should be a way of showcasing your typographic ability, as well as layout skills. Clean, elegant and simple is creative dissertation best just like any classic design. Write Sophisticated Essay? I#8217;m a graphic designer. I believe that our resumes need to be different and show that we are creative. Creative? Write Essay? its about creative theology, what#8217;s on lancia thesis dvd the page that will get you the job. not the dissertation theology, crazy graphical background or unreadable grid structure. BE SIMPLE. Great collection and great tips Igor. They look really cool. Indian Essayist? Here is my approach of a cv design. Creative? Ok, I admit those are amazing websites, however I get the lancia thesis dvd, feeling it#8217;s a bit complicated and not user friendly to browse.

These are fun to look at as designs, but they don#8217;t work as resumes. Most of them would not reproduce in a copier, for one thing. For another, as has been pointed out, they are unlikely to appeal to an overworked HR person tasked with sorting through hundreds of resumes to find five people to interview. Dissertation? They would not be amused. You don#8217;t want to come across as so different that you wouldn#8217;t fit in. Unless you#8217;re applying for the hottest agency in thesis, the coolest city on earth, the chances are you#8217;d be working for creative dissertation (even with) fairly conservative people.

Also, don#8217;t a lot of HR and headhunter outfits use software to scan for key words? How would most of these resumes work with that? These are all really, really bad as resumes, and a lot of them are bad from a graphic design point of 2014, view. Don#8217;t encourage people to creative dissertation turn in resumes like this. Thanks for sharing the article. Well, most of them are usability nightmares, to be honest… Great, thanks for share this. What are you thinking about my first. In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system. The Harvard system is also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is forests for water and wetlands essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. You do this by stating the author(s) and creative the year of the publication you consulted.

Where the name of the author occurs naturally in write sophisticated essay, the text, it does not need to be repeated. Creative Dissertation. The references are usually included at thesis the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the text flow is not interrupted too much, such as in front of dissertation, a comma. This may be necessary, for writing a cover 2014 example, if only the first half of your sentence is based on someone else’s work. Switzerland seems to theology, be the ideal place for studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in brackets, together with the year of publication.

Some styles put a comma between the 2014 two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol). Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is theology given, followed by et al. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to select the most relevant ones. What should you reference? Basically references should be included to any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite.

However, statements of general nature need not be attributed to anyone. A statement that the sky is indian essayist blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the dissertation theology page where you copy from. This is needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so.

See the separate section on quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for such a statement, because you have not actually read it. Sophisticated. Can you really be sure this is creative dissertation theology what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to add cited in after the indian essayist reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the creative dissertation theology work you consulted, and this includes the year of publication. Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the correct year can be helpful. Lancia Dvd. Similarly, even if a book is dissertation theology merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the writing 2014 year of the edition you consulted.

The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to creative theology, circumvent this issue is to give both years: the year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted. Sometimes slashes are used between the thesis dvd dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]).

Another small issue occurs where an author published more than one book or article in a single year, and you want to cite more than one of creative dissertation theology, them. The trick here is to add letters from the writing a cover 2014 alphabet after the year to identify which of the works you refer to. Use the letter a for the first of your references, the letter b for the second and creative dissertation so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the author, followed by the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the end it’s your responsibility that the references are correct. At the end of indian essayist, your essay you should include a list of references. Such a list of references provides more details than just the dissertation name of the author and the year of publication. It’s this list that allows identifying the work cited. Each work you cited in the essay is cited once, and listed in sophisticated, alphabetical order. Note that a bibliography and list of references is not technically the same.

A bibliography is a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in dissertation theology, the main text. References are the sources you cited, even if they are rather trivial. Use the write sophisticated heading references for dissertation theology your references. For books, you put the family name of the author(s) and writing a cover 2014 their initials, followed by creative theology the year of publication in brackets, the title in italics, the place of lancia thesis, publication, and finally the name of the publisher. If there are editors, give their names instead of the authors’. If there is a subtitle to the title, this is usually separated using colons (: sign). Where there are more than four authors, it’s common to use et al. after the first three, but some styles insist on citing all authors. Sometimes a book is co-published by two publishers, and this can be indicated by dissertation using a slash (/ sign). Where you give the editors rather than the actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is indian essayist only one.

The title is capitalized. For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. (eds) (1998) Stability and creative dissertation Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger. Granovetter, M. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand. Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and university admissions question Signifying Practices , London, Sage.

Halsey, A., Heath, A. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press. Chapters in a book are cited separately, especially if the book is edited. Creative Theology. You give the family name of the author and his or her initial, the year, the name of the chapter in single speech marks (‘ and ’ sign; not capitalized), followed by the word in , and the name and year of the editor(s). If you cite only one chapter, you can give the university admissions whole reference at the end; otherwise it’s enough to give the name and year of the editor. Creative Theology. In this case, however, the book itself needs to be included in the list of references, too. For example: Allen, J. (1995) ‘Global worlds’ in sophisticated essay, Allen, J. Massey, D. (eds) (1995). Hardin, R. (1990) ‘Public choice versus democracy’ in theology, Chapman, J. Wertheimer, A. (eds) (1990). Leroy, P. University Of Maryland. Verhagen, K. (2003) ‘Environmental politics: Society’s capacity for political response’ in Blowers, A. Hinchliffe, S. (eds) (2003) Environmental Responses , Chichester, Wiley. An entry in a printed encyclopaedia or a dictionary can be cited if it was a chapter in a book.

The editors are often given on the front of the reference book. For example: Jackman, R. (2001) ‘Social capital’ in Smelser, N. Baltes, P. (eds) (2004). Journal articles are cited in a way that is quite similar to chapters in a book. The main difference really is that details about the volume and page numbers are included, too. The reference starts with the name and initial of the author, the year in brackets, the title of the article in single speech marks (not capitalized), followed by the name of the journal in italics (capitalized), and further details. The details of journals are commonly abbreviated as follows: the volume number followed by a colon and the page numbers of the article. If there are different numbers to a volume, this is indicated by including it in brackets before the colon, if known. Online journals may not have page numbers.

For example: Burt, R. (1987) ‘Social contagion and creative innovation: Cohesion versus structural equivalence’, American Journal of Sociology , 92:1287–335. Thoits, P. Hewitt, L. (2001) ‘Volunteer work and well-being’, Journal of Health and Social Behaviour , 42(2):115–31. Small, C. (1999) ‘Finding an invisible history: A computer simulation experiment (in virtual Polynesia)’, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation , 2(3). Valente, T. Writing Letter 2014. (1996) ‘Social network thresholds in the diffusion of information’, Social Networks , 18(1):69–89. Pages on the internet should be cited where used. You should bear in mind the quality of the site before citing from theology it, but if you use a web site, reference it, too. There are many internet sites that are perfectly acceptable as sources for your essays. The reference includes the name of the author and initial, the year in brackets, the title of the document in italics, the word online in square brackets, the place of publication, the publisher, the words available from investment thesis : followed by the URL, and theology the date when the write sophisticated document was accessed in brackets.

The date is important, because unlike printed works, web sites often change their content or even disappear. Many web sites include a copyright note at dissertation theology the bottom, giving you an indication when the investment content was written. For example: Moser, P. (2005) Politik im Kanton Zurich—eine Synthese [online], Zurich, Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zurich, available from: http://web.archive.org/web/20051224111845/http://www.statistik.zh.ch/statistik.info/pdf/2005_15.pdf [accessed 27th October 2005]. Chan, T. Goldthorpe, J. (2004) Social Status and dissertation Newspaper Readership [online], Oxford, Oxford University, available from: http://users.ox.ac.uk/ sfos0006/papers/news4.pdf [accessed 31st March 2005]. Newspaper articles are very similar to journal articles in the way they are cited. The key difference is that rather than the volume, the date is given. The reference therefore includes the name and initial of the author, the year of publication in dvd, brackets, the title in single speech marks, the name of the dissertation newspaper in italics (capitalized), the date, and writing a cover finally the creative theology page where the article was found. For one page it’s customary to investment, use the abbreviation p. , for articles running over two or more pages, the theology abbreviation pp. is common.

For example: Cockburn, P. Usborne, D. Parental. (2004) ‘Burning with anger: Iraqis infuriated by theology new flag that was designed in indian essayist, London’, The Independent , 28th April, pp.2–3. Handouts from a lecture can be referenced and should be referenced if they are used as the basis of what you write. It’s normally a better idea not to use lecture notes, but try to find the original referred to in the creative dissertation theology lecture. Not only will you have more control over what was actually said, but also can your readers more easily access books and journal article than lecture handouts. The reference to a lecture handout includes the name and initial of the lecturer, the year in bracket, the title of the handout in single speech marks, the words lecture notes distributed in followed by the name of the course in italics, the word at and the name of your institution, the lancia thesis dvd place, and date of the lecture. For example: Burt, S. (2005) ‘Survey sampling and administration’, lecture notes distributed in Survey Research Methods at Cambridge University, Cambridge, 9th February 2005. Personal conversations are not commonly considered good sources, but if they are what you use as the creative basis of your essay, you should include such conversations.

It’s usually a good idea to have another reference to write sophisticated essay, a printed piece, but sometimes this is creative dissertation theology not an option. In terms of giving the reference, personal conversations are very easy: the name of the person you spoke to, the year in brackets, the words conversation with the author and the date of the conversation. Letter 2014. For example: Smith, E. (2004) conversation with the author 6th July 2004. The same format can also be used for personal e-mail, or instant messengers. Once again, bear in dissertation theology, mind the credibility of lancia thesis, your sources. With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the e-mail address of the sender in brackets after the name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the author. The subject line of the e-mail is often included as the title. With all forms of personal conversation, the issue of consent is important. It’s always a very good idea to check with the author first.

There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the average book or journal article. For everything there is a solution in the academic conventions. If you refer to dissertation theology, musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done. If everything else fails, remember the function of referencing, and provide a reasonable amount of information for others to chase the work. Common problems include the lack of authors, unpublished documents, or lack of publisher. Where there is no author, often there is an lancia thesis dvd, organization. Put the name of the organization. If there is no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the theology author’s name. For example:

IDEA (1998) Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006]. Thesis Dvd. UN Statistics Division (2006) Social Indicators [online], New York, UN Statistics Division, available from: http://unstats.un.org/unsd/demographic/products/socind/inc-eco.htm [accessed 20th February 2006]. Sometimes the year of creative dissertation, a document is not known. Where you have a rough idea, you can put a c before the date, such as in (c.1999). Where you just have no clue, there is no need to panic: simply put the indian essayist word unknown instead of the creative dissertation year. Documents that are unpublished as such, for example a thesis or a draft article you were sent, should come with the indication that they are not published. This is easily done by including the word unpublished in write sophisticated essay, brackets at the end of the reference.

With articles sent to you, you should always ask permission to cite; just like you would with an ordinary e-mail. For theses it’s common to include the kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Where the name or place of the publisher is unknown a very simple solution is used: leave the creative dissertation information blank. This is particularly an issue with internet sites. Including the URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the name of the publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts. Give the name of the author, the year in brackets, the writing letter 2014 course code if there is one, the course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of dissertation theology, material and its title in parental investment, single speech marks, place of dissertation theology, publication, and publisher. For example: Peake, S. (2003) U216 Environment , Video 4 ‘Shanghai Boom’, Milton Keynes, The Open University. The Open University (2004) DD305 Personal Lives and Social Policy , CD-ROM 2 ‘Interviews and Interviewing’, Milton Keynes, The Open University.

The capitalization of titles may seem a bit confusing, but it follows a simple logic: it’s the main title that is write capitalized. In the case of a book, the main title is that of the dissertation book. In the case of journal articles, on the other hand, the main title is thought to be that of the journal itself. It might be confusing that within the journal, the title of an article often is capitalized. Capitalization is not very hard to achieve. Put in capital letters are all nouns, proper names, the first word, verbs, and parental investment adjectives. This is in fact almost everything. Not put in capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . Dissertation Theology. Unfortunately most word processors don’t capitalize properly when told to, and put every single word in capital letters, including the ands and withins that should not come with capital letters. Different publishers have different house styles, and you might come across a title with a word you would normally spell differently.

This is common with British and admissions essay question American variants, but there are other words, too, such as post-modernity . No matter how strongly you might disagree with the spelling, you should always use the original spelling in the references. Creative Dissertation Theology. It’s perfectly fine to change them in your essay itself, but not in the references. A good manual of style, such as the Oxford Style Manual (Ritter, 2003) will be able to give you further guidance. Many course providers have their own preferences or house styles, and parental investment it’s advisable to follow these conventions. Where there are no house styles, using a system such as the creative dissertation one outlined in this guide in a cover, a consistent manner will be well received. You’ll find full references to every work mentioned in this book at dissertation theology the end. It’s difficult to write about referencing without mentioning plagiarism. Plagiarism describes the parental thesis act or result where you take the words or ideas of somebody else and present them as your own. Plagiarism is considered serious academic misconduct and creative dissertation theology can be punished severely. Indian Essayist. Most importantly, however, your reputation is on the line. The origin of the word plagiarism gives you an idea what others will think of you when you plagiarize.

The word goes back to the Latin plagiarius , a thief and kidnapper—in particular a child snatcher and somebody abducting slaves. Theology. The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of reasons why plagiarism occurs. Indian Essayist. The worst case is deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason). Careless work may lead to plagiarism, but is dissertation not commonly considered as severe an offence as the deliberate case. Careless work is often a sign of thesis, students working too closely to theology, the original, and this can be easily remedied. Without changing your habit, simply by including references to where you got the write sophisticated ideas from, and creative dissertation putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. In practice, you still might rely too much on thesis dvd, the original and not deliver as good an essay as you could. Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly. At the dissertation theology time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the internet, but is it really worth it?

Bear in mind that there is something in for you, too—that is something in addition to the grades. The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to the original, there is write essay a simple solution: don’t write the essay with the creative theology books in front of you. Writing Letter 2014. By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by word. In a way, you force yourself to make the material your own: and that is dissertation theology a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and not least, you’ll also get better grades.

Rather than having the a cover letter 2014 original works in front of you, try using your notes. Dissertation. As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to indian essayist, notice the triple X; and there is always the creative dissertation theology search facility in the word processor. By putting a place holder, I can get on with the thesis job of creative theology, writing without interrupting my thoughts. Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to myself that there is some more work to be done: finding the proper reference, for example. If you think plagiarism is hard to detect by your marker, think again. There are a great number of signs that give plagiarized work away.

Technology-wise, your markers are likely to university of maryland admissions essay, have the same possibilities than you have if not more. If you can copy and dissertation theology paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on a search engine, again. It would, of course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is investment no longer easy to spot. Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the essay yourself. Just to give you an idea, the theology markers of your essay will not only have access to the same search engines than you have. There is software to forests and wetlands essay, scan essays for duplicates; and many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on the internet where complete essays are sold). Creative Dissertation. The most successful tool, however, is probably the dvd human brain with its incredible ability to remember. Creative. If you copy from writing letter a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from creative theology a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading.

Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is sophisticated set in creative dissertation, the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for write essay example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in style or formatting. Many people are unaware of creative dissertation theology, how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is. They are in fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001).

Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of words, the kinds of metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the length of sentences, or the writing letter 2014 use of specialist terms. Typographic signs include font size, choices of where to break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and things like proper m- and creative n-dashes (when copying from electronic articles). The presence or lack of references is often an a cover letter, easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in creative dissertation theology, references when copying from electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the internet will very unlikely link well with the university of maryland admissions rest of your essay. The style may be inappropriate, or just different.

Essays from an essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set. In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by writing freely without having the books right in front of dissertation theology, you. Instead, work with your notes, and writing letter 2014 take care to creative, put references where you use the ideas from others. Don’t use the write sophisticated essay internet to creative theology, copy from, no matter how tempting it is. It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly. Knowing your citations from your quotations is useful when writing essays.

It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly. Citations are about ideas you take from others. Quotations are about the exact words used by others. This is really the whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is a quotation, because I use the exact same words Blankenhorn did.

However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only use the idea, not the exact words. When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and a quotation is that for indian essayist a quotation we always put a page number. This is done to dissertation theology, enable the reader to forests essay, check the creative words in the original context. In the letter 2014 list of references at the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by indenting the quotations, and usually putting in a slightly smaller font. Longer means about 3 to 4 lines or more. For example: It is true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in theology, any of the dvd three dimensions. Creative Dissertation. They may attach greater importance to writing a cover letter, some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136)

When quoting someone else, you should take great care to copy the creative dissertation words exactly. Of Maryland Essay Question. Sometimes, you might want to creative dissertation, change a quote slightly in order to make it fit your essay. If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and essay cite the work instead. If the changes are small, use square brackets to indicate that you have changed the text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in square brackets, leaving the rest the same. This indicates to my readers that the words in square brackets are not the exact same as Rawls used. For reference, the original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). Creative Dissertation. I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in indian essayist, more general terms. Whilst quotations can lighten up an essay, you should not rely on them too much.

Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. The consequence is that the dissertation quotations may be relevant in write sophisticated, content (what is theology being said), but in terms of for water and wetlands, style don’t fit well with what you wrote. If you rely too much on quotations, you run the risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an extended essay, it’s easiest to put the references whilst you write. This is the theology case, because you still know where you got the idea from.

I keep a place holder to remind myself that a reference is parental needed if I can’t remember the author right away. Creative Theology. Often, I will know at least some of it, and write this down. By putting a place holder rather than chasing the reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing. However, I also indicate that the essay is not completed. Essay. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the full references once I completed the essay or section.

References are needed whenever you write an creative, academic piece of writing. Even where you can get away without referencing, by including references your essay will be taken more serious. It’s a good habit to put references all the time, so when you really need to—such as in indian essayist, your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out how to reference a chapter in a book. There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. These computer applications interact with your word processor, and automate much of the referencing process.

They manage citations, and usually let you search libraries and journal databases. Useful and creative dissertation theology flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the deadline is menacing. For example, make sure you know how to put page numbers for quotations. Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in indian essayist, a separate file. So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file.

The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and creative pasting, without the work of formatting the reference. Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of time, too.
